Climbing stairs through the dark curtain to get to Brix gives a good first impression. Staff seemed a little uncertain initially where to put as we hadn't made a reservation and the manager wasn't available. In the end we were seated in a pleasant area to e back of the restaurant with plenty of space between tables. The menu also gives a good first impression, with Pacific rim dishes jostling with the more conventional. Our starters of pan-fried squid was let down by the over-salty dressing which made it hard to identify much subtlety. My fettuccine with five types of mushroom was perfectly adequate but there was little skill behind the cooking. My partner's dish of halibut on celeriac remoulade with beetroot jus was the worst dish of the evening and totally misjudged. The halibut was overcooked and the syrupy beetroot was more like ketchup and just totally wrong.
