From the minute we arrived at the Loden we felt assured that we would be in good hands. To say that service was polite and professional might normally sound clinical but it felt as though every guest or even wandering tourist would be treated with VIP status. During every interaction - whether initiated by a question/request or something more mundane, it was as though staff took every opportunity to offer a solution and most importantly, took accountability and would mange the resolution or situation. Not that there were any problems from the hotel! For instance, when trying to figure out the best travel arrangements, the lady at the desk told us not to worry and then coordinated behind the scenes and came back a solution.

The room itself was stunning. The choice of pieces worked from both a style and function perspective. For instance, leather chairs and a leather "window seat" by the entrance looked classy but provided additional durability. The big screen TV came with so many ways to plug things in tthat it really was an entertainment centre. The layout of the room and bathroom was so elegant - I found myself taking notes for my dream home. Everything just felt so clean and upscale that I forgot it was a hotel that can have as many as 14 people pass through a single room over a week.

We used the restaurant for breakfast and for late night drinks. The prices were a bit high, but the food and drinks were great. Because of when we were eating, we didn't get the opportunity to evaluate the creativity of the menu, which I might use to justify the prices for breakfast or drinks. So its just a caution - if you plan on using the restaurant as your main source of meals - it is pricey.

The one minor downside was there was so much fantastic technology built into the suite - like buttons to request privacy and dimming this and fancy alarm clock that - with minimal instruction. For the life of me I couldn't figure out how to turn off the bathroom fan. I could manually override it but then it seemed to go back on to a prescribed schedule and was mildly irritating. Similarly with the alarm clock - it took a couple of educated guesses to set the alarm and was still a little worried that I managed to mess it up and so had several backups. But a minor quibble in the grand scheme of things.

This boutique hotel opened it's doors just a couple of years ago. Overall a positive experience but several issues detracted from an otherwise fair value package. An imaginative restaurant affordable menu with top notch friendly service which applied to valet staff, hosekeeping and concierge services, even the front desk. Response time for fixing an annoying TV problem was very fast as well. A few things need sorting however. Here's my gripe list:

Leaky shower door allowed water to spread far and wide - dangerous on marble floor. Shower head collides with inward opening door and ends up pointing at the wall instead of you & is unreachable to all except the tallest guest. There are no coffee/tea making facilities in-room but the lobby offers the very highest quality European coffee if you can be bothered to head down there as soon as you're out of bed. The bed frame projected far enough to cause stubbed toes on the metal leg. Ouch! So lot's of poorly thought out teething design issues that didn't spoil our stay. The check-out procedure revealed valet parking charges that topped a whopping $47 a night if you include HST and specific parking related taxes. Guests better check the valet charge before booking. After searching for a fair deal, much of the value offered is lost on valet charges. The hotel should be more up front in revealing this at time of booking. I was partly at fault for not checking. Rooms don't have much of a view unless on the higher floors.

On the plus side, it was nice to have only 7 rooms per floor. The hotel is spotlessly clean & sharp and well located. There were several excellent value all day breakfast joints within 100 metres of the lobby, so no need to pay hotel restaurant rates to start your day.

Will we return? Probably - one day, if the rate includes a declared fair value for parking.

We stayed at the Loden for a long weekend getaway over my birthday in July. It was a great choice. This small-ish hotel is impeccably maintained and has all the amenities world-class travelers expect: central location, stylish rooms with mind-blowing bathrooms, turndown service, helpful concierge services, complimentary morning coffee bar, gym, office suite, etc. The staff is only too happy to accommodate special requests from guests whenever possible. In our case that meant asking for an extra-late check out for our redeye flight back to NYC. Management graciously allowed to use the room well into the evening for a small fee. Very classy.

Stayed here for 3 nights in a park vista room. Right from check in we had no problems, staff were attentive but not overbearing. Room was spacious and very clean with free wi fi. We used the 2 complimentary bikes that the hotel have to ride around Stanley Park which was great. You have to book them and you get a 3 hour slot which is ample time. Good location about 10 minute walk to shops and restaurants.

We just returned from a 2-night stay at the Loden. I can't say enough about the Loden's professional, friendly, responsive staff - which is why I scored it with 4 stars rather than 3. Their excellence mostly made up for a couple of things we thought were not so excellent about the hotel itself. First, our biggest annoyance was a persistent vibratory noise in our room which seemed to be coming from the elevator bank. We spent our first night in a room on the 8th floor almost directly across from the elevators, and the thrumming/vibration each time an elevator moved was very obvious and quite irritating (even wearing earplugs you could hear/feel it). The next morning I informed the front desk of this, and they very willingly moved us to a room on the 11th floor further down the hall from the elevators. Although being further down the hall seemed to lessen the vibratory noise, we could still hear it. Given that there are only about 10 rooms on each floor of the hotel, and since our room the 2nd night was near the end of the hallway (with the elevators in the middle of the hallway), I would guess that the vibratory noise is present in most if not all rooms of the hotel. I would be curious to know if any other guests have noticed this. The other thing that bothered us (and which can easily be corrected by hotel management) is a wide gap between the glass shower door and the wall which allows water from the shower to easily spray/leak out onto the bathroom floor. So much for a nice, dry shower mat to step out on. Have other guests noticed this? My own glass shower door at home has a clear silicone gasket along the edge of the door to prevent this from happening - why the shower doors in the Loden don't have this same gasket is puzzling. Apart from these two issues, the Loden is a nice hotel with a laid-back vibe that is not trying to be as splashy as a lot of the newer trendy hotels are trying to be. We liked that. With regard to recommending the Loden to a friend, I would make sure they know about the vibration noise in the rooms before they book to make sure this is not going to bother them as it did us.

We were very pleased with all aspects of the hotel and thorougly enjoyed our stay. The location was ideal for sight seeing and restaurants, the staff were very helpful and the room was modern, particularly the bathroom, with plenty of space for clothes. Good value.

The only minor criticism was no tea/coffee making facilities in the bedroom. Tea and coffee were available in the lobby in the morning, but only up to around 9.30.
