“Great venue.. Great talent.. Left me wanting more”
Reviewed July 10, 2011

Spending a couple of days in Vancouver, I wanted to make sure to enjoy some of the city's nightlife... VTSL was almost too good for their own good.

VTSL has a great venue on Granville Island. I attended Scared Scriptless, a departure from the typical challenge-based improv to which you may be accustomed, the four performers did a number of skits that required varying degrees of audience participation.

The venue and performers were great. With clear sight lines the venue was intimate enough to allow me to feel part of the action. The performers, really challenged by the audience's prompts, were quite creative and nimble. I really had a great time!

The only downside was the length of the show... lasting little more than an hour, these guys were so creative and fun that I was wanting more!

We were misinformed about an Ice Hockey game that didn't happen so we searched the internet far and wide for something to do on a Sunday evening in Vancouver and we optimistically settled up the VTSL. It turned out to be a cracking, little night and we were laughing from the moment the show started, all the way through to the end. Next time we're in Vancouver, we'll be back for this!!

“A 'Must'!”
Reviewed October 15, 2010

I've lived in/around Vancouver for most of my life and I keep coming back to this. It's hilarious, off-beat, milk-out-your-nose comedy. I went for my bachelorette party and was up on stage! It is super low-key and fun and you won't regret going!

“Perfect Evening Diversion at Granville Island”
Reviewed August 3, 2010

As a frequent patron and supporter of Vancouver TheatreSports, I enthusiastically recommend Vancouver TheatreSports if a visitor is looking for a fun and entertaining evening in Vancouver, especially at Granville Island. For those wondering what TheatreSports is, it's the improvised creation of dramatic scenes on stage by a team of actors using a suggestion provided by an audience member.

Its new location on Granville Island at a purpose-built, modern theatre means it is easier to catch a show if you're using transit. The theatre is located close to the entrance of Granville Island, almost across from Kids Only Market. A walk from the nearest bus stop is about five minutes if you walk very leisurely. The new theatre has a variety of seating, from tables and chairs in the front, to conventional row seating towars the rear. The show schedule offers a variety of shows. Generally, the earlier shows tend to me more appropriate for a wider audience (older elementary school age and up should be fine), but if you choose to catch a late night show, the cast tends to work "blue", so don't be too surprised at profanity or suggestive content.

As for the quality of the improvised theatre, Vancouver TheatreSports offers a rather high quality show. After catching a TheatreSports show in Seattle, this troupe is very good. Their actors are talented and imaginative, and are (usually) not afraid of taking on some challenging suggestions from the audience. The audience is pretty respectful of the performers, and the MCs do a good job of making sure the audience is aware of the etiquette that surrounds catching a TheatreSports show. Depending on the show, it is approximately 60 to 90 minutes in length.

Should you decide to go, one of the greatest tips I can offer involve the collection of suggestions by the actors from the audience. Wait until the actor has finished speaking, then call out your suggestion. Don't shout out suggestions that are scatological or too suggestive in nature. Sometimes the oddest, most mundane suggestions can yield some great improvised scenes -- and sometimes not. Let the actors find the humour and the possibility in the suggestion as it is their job. And once the scene starts, be quiet. Sometimes it gets really annoying to hear people talk or text during a dramatic scene. And of course, if they do a great job (improvised drama is not easy), respond enthusiastically. The actors definitely feed off the energy of the crowd.

I highly recommend catching a show of Vancouver TheatreSports at Granville Island if a visitor is looking for an evening activity while in Vancouver. Moreover, since rain and cold weather is a common occurrence here in Vancouver, it also makes for a perfect indoor option. If a visitor decides to go twice, you're guaranteed a different show as the variety of suggestions keeps it unpredictable and fresh. Because it is improvised theatre, there's no guarantee that the show will unfold the way it should, so it's possible that it could fall flat. (For example, when they asked for a country to colour their next scene, I shouted out "South Africa". Consequently, some actors struggled with trying to speak in a South African accent.)

I highly recommend any interested visitors coming to our lovely city to catch a show of Vancouver TheatreSports.

“Hilarious Improv!”
Reviewed July 19, 2009

The TheatreSports league at Granville Island was just awesome. It is quite clean, but with enough subtle innuendos that it's not stifling. I would not feel bad about taking an 8 year old or older. But it's much better if you can go with an older group to a later performance and have some pear cider or Granville Island beer and get ready to laugh your cares away!!!!!
