We spent three nights at the West Coast Suites and were delighted with the size of the room, quality of the decor and campus location. The complimentary breakfast was an unexpected extra, but very basic and served in the student union. Bed was very comfortable and free wifi a bonus.

Hotel suite was spacious and nice. Couldn't ask for a better location. Vancouver is truly a beautiful city and UBC is a great campus. Only downfall is the lack of wireless availability in the rooms.

I attended a conference on the UBC campus. My husband joined me because there were so many things to do around the university and in Vancouver. We stayed in two different locations on the campus: the Marine Drive Residence #5 and the Walter Gage suites. We moved because of the bed in the Marine Drive Residence; it was only full size and not firm enough for two. Also there was no television in the room. The Walter Gage was more expensive but more comfortable for two. The queen size bed was fairly firm, which we like, nice linens and pillows. There was free internet cable, but no wi-fi except in the lobby. Initially we had planned to move into Vancouver when the conference ended -- but the campus environment was so pleasant that we just stayed put. Note that we were there during the summer session. We visited the Museum of Anthropology (twice), the BioDiversity Museum, and the Botanical Gardens with the amazing walkway in the trees. There is also a gym on campus which visitors can use for a daily fee. The public transportation into Vancouver was amazing - we only needed a taxi to get to the airport for our Sunday very early morning departure. In the city we visited Standley Park and the aquarium, Granville Island and just walked around downtown - it's very foot friendly. The Canadians must have been at the front of the line when God handed out the "friendly and nice" genes. We are adventurous and staying at UBC was a great location for us. Negatives: UBC is really far from the ferry to Vancouver Island; if you are using public transportation it's more than a day trip. Also, the breakfast, which was included, was dorm food. Very basic and boring.

Second time staying on UBC campus. For C139 you get a pretty, modern suite (easily sleeps three adults or two adults and two young kids) with sitting room (and sleeper sofa), kitchenette, wifi, cheap parking, and super comfortable king size bed. Just a few blocks from the coast - stayed our first time for easy access to beaches for summer fireworks. The management is very gracious, and let us shorten our reservation on very limited notice for no charge. Fun to be on a college campus. We will be back!

Room Tip: Ask for room on second floor to avoid being right on the parking lot.

My daughter and I went to check out UBC. We decided to stay at West Coast Suites because it's on the campus and it looked nice online. At $145 a night (including parking), it's not a bad deal: the suites are nice, the bed was excellent, and the amenities were convenient (fridge, plates, full set of cookware, etc.). But our time there was unpleasant due to noise from the bus terminal that was across the street from our room. The busses start running pretty early in the AM and continue until pretty late at night. The topper was a car alarm. Someone's car was parked in the bus terminal and the alarm went off without interruption from about 11PM to 5AM. At 3:30 got up and walked through the rain to the desk to ask that they call campus security and deal with it. Campus Security was about 100 meters from the car, but they never heard it. Other than that, the stay was as we hoped. You can't get a better location if you have business on campus. It's easy to find and parking is easy, too. Oh, one more thing: while the staff were nice, the housekeeping folks showed up at 8:25 in the morning, both days! Zealous? Or just trying to get off early?

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from the busses.

Let's start with the positives. The idea of UBC Suites is a good one. Major university, downtown location, perfect place to stick a hotel for those needing to visit the UBC campus or its environs. The location is perfect. The staff we dealt with were very friendly. Once inside, the suites were lovely.

Once inside.

The common areas — corridors, lifts and the hell that is the reception area — are, however, a disaster. Peeling carpets, the reception a draughty building site, broken heating panels in corridors.

All this might be okay if UBC charged $60 a night. At $125 a night, I'd expect something considerably better.

The moral is probably that I wouldn't attend a PhD programme taught by a hotel chain. Conversely, staying in a hotel run by a university is probably asking for trouble.

Best avoided, until UBC seriously raise their game and their level of service.

Room Tip: The suites we and our colleagues stayed in were lovely inside. Outside, it's like the hotel equi...

Thank you for your feedback and positive comments. The renovations adjacent to our front desk, which were prominently noted on our web site, are now complete. Replacement of several damaged radiators in the hallways is being addressed. We regret any inconvenience caused.

Staying at the West Coast Suites was great for us...we enjoyed the collegiate atmosphere (students had returned in the 1st week of school) and it was close to everything we wanted to see. We also really liked the extra space the suite provided (more than just one room) and parking was a breeze (costs extra but still less expensive than any hotel). However, if you wanted more peace and quiet - you might consider something else - with school in session, there was quite a bit of noise and activity - normal stuff, not anything out of the ordinary. All in all, we enjoyed our time here and would come back again.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing the outside street - otherwise, you'll face the inner courtyard where the...
