Of course, a rating of five is due as it’s a beautiful city with a huge downtown.
We had an exceptionally nice and extended walk, just from the tourist visitor’s place, to the waterfront on the ocean coast, looking at the boats, the hydroplanes and the green grass of the gardens, just nearby.
There are several pubs and restaurants of all kinds and all prices almost everywhere. Public washrooms are really scarce in downtown and parking is limited to two hours as a maximum or is excessively pricey in private parkings into our opinion.
Approaching Chinatown, we met some youngsters, too may, laying on the floor or sitting on a corner, in a very bad shape, one with coagulated blood, visible on one vein on an extended arm. Homeless people are visible by taking a bus from downtown towards East, once again too many.
Hotels are very expensive, on a par with the most expensive cities in Northern America.

I travel a lot for work and pleasure and everytime I'm back in Vancouver my heart breaks seeing how the city changes for the worst. You can forget about using a bus, it is stressful and limited, but still better than US public transport. Drugs and mental illness is rampant, beggars on almost every major intersection. There is no jewel or character to the city, just bland industrial landscape. Ironically and tragically, in an orwellian fashion, Vancouver administration touts itself as a green city, whereas any European city is far more green and pleasant to visit.

The vibe here is tough for me to put my finger on. The people are pleasant and city clean and efficient, but...

Perhaps the word I’m looking for is ‘practical’. Nothing outlandish, or over the top, which is a compliment; not exciting and not flashy, as with the architecture - completely practical for its purpose.

On the other hand, the breadth of nature and the wonderful ethnic food would certainly bring me back. This area is vast, an outdoorsman’s candy land.
