Although there are many remarkable places to visit such as the Botanical Gardens on a scenic drive around the University of British Columbia, you might have a specific reason to visit one place in particular and don't know how to get there! The Chan Centre is a magnificent concert hall used not only for graduation ceremonies by the University but by organisations such as the Vancouver Recital Society. In November 2012, a concert by Stephen Hough, one of the world's great pianists, had fans travelling hundreds of miles to hear him. There was not an empty seat left in the Chan Centre, despite competition from a concert downtown by Sir Paul McCartney and a million or so avid Grey Cup Fans! The problem we had was how to find the centre after arriving in Vancouver and secondly where to park once it was found. No need to worry. Find 4th Avenue and drive West as far as you can go! That goes out to the university and you'll find the Chan Centre on your left with the entrance to a huge underground parking facility which has elevators leading directly to the Centre. On the way back to the city, turn left when you leave the car park and continue round the university on South West Marine Drive till you reach Oak St and then turn left into the city or right to the ferries to Vancouver Island. On the way to the Chan, just before 4th Ave becomes Chancellor Blvd, if you have time, turn right on Tolmie St and see the most amazing houses with stupendous views over the harbour approaches filled with ships from all over the world and the magnificent mountains behind them. The drive back along Marine Drive has even better houses and estates to marvel at. If you are lucky enough to attend a concert at the Chan, it will be a memorable experience but even that circular drive would be a worthwhile addition to your travels.
