“Great food”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

Near perfection. We were 9 people and I managed to taste 5 different dishes, all of them delicious. Not an easy feat to pull off perfectly cooked Eggs Benedict on a busy Mother's Day brunch; to time it so that all of us got our plates at the same time, and warm too!; to keep the (very good) coffee flowing. And to boot the plates were attractively arranged, and the staff was friendly. Even the owner nicely indulged my overly chatty sister and never let on just how crazy busy he was. Wonderful Mother's Day thanks to Fable.

“Neighbourly Perfection.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2013

Fable is the sort of neighbourhood restaurant we all wish was just around the corner. Simple food based on locally sourced ingredients and solid technic means the dishes not only satisfy but wow us. Try the "canned tuna" it's a go to dish. The rabbit special and fish dishes on offer when we dined were damn good too. Service is friendly and efficient but hey this is Canada, what do you expect? Sit at the bar and you can almost lend the chefs a hand. The desserts although tasty were a touch too tricky for the style of dining.

“One of the best food and dining experiences ever!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

We waited for seats at the bar and were rewarded with a birds eye view of the happenings. The staff and owners went out of their way to talk to us, to joke, to tell us their stories about their journeys to the restaurant. The food was so well-prepared and works of art. The owner surprised us with a complimentary dessert to die for - non cheesecake-tasting cheesecake and ganouche.
The place was busy on the Saturday night but that didn't impact the care and attention we received. Owners Kathy and Don and the rest of the staff should be commended for the warm and inviting atmosphere and the wonderful food!
A definite stop on W. 4th Ave!

“Third Time Not a Charm”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2013

We ate there on Saturday night after having two fantastic dinners, one last August and once around New Years. The place was packed this time and we were a little late being seated but no big deal. They brought us complimentary corn bread with chipotle butter which was excellent. The bread was moist with a great crust and the butter had a nice smokiness and heat. We ordered the chickpea fritters and gnocchi, both of which were so good the first two times we had to have them again. This time they disappointed. The fritters were rock hard and the gnocchi had the texture of loose balls of mash potatoes. Perhaps our expectations were high but these were a far cry from the gnocchi we had the first two times which were the best we ever had. The mushroom sauce that accompanied the gnocchi was quite good.
Both times we ate here previously we had the flat iron steak. Cooked perfectly and the pepper jam was a great addition. This time we had the potato crusted chicken with fable stew and the halibut with chorizo bouillabaisse. The chicken was cooked perfectly, moist with a good crust but tasted bland. The stew was closer to sautéed vegetables and lacked any real sauce. The halibut was also cooked well but either the bouillabaisse or the polenta crouton tasted like the lid fell off the salt shaker while seasoning. I mentioned this to our server and they suggested the salt was from the chorizo (I didn’t taste it there) but he still removed it from the bill. After two fantastic meals we were disappointed this time. Interestingly, the first two times we dined at Fable Trevor Bird (head chef/owner) was in the kitchen but he was not there during this visit. Perhaps it was just an off night, but if Saturday had been our first time at Fable, we would not likely be going back. But, knowing how good they can be, we will give it another try. We based our ratings on all three visits.

“Amazing! Great service and awesome food!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2013

This might be my new favourite restaurant in Vancouver. Be warned, it is super busy and we tried two other times to get in so book a reservation! We sat at the bar and it was such a great experience watching the people prep and cook the food. We met Trevor, the head chef, super nice and Ron the owner (I think). Jordan, our waiter, was such a treat! It is a well oiled machine. There were four of us and I am sure we tried all the starters. Really, everything was awesome! Thanks so much and we will be back!
