Had invited 4 friends, after being told that this restaurant was serving authentic Malaysian and Singapore dishes Two from the group are Singaporeans and one had worked and lived in Singapore for 4 years.
Good ambience, except for Hank Williams and his ilk. But we came to satisfy our craving for Malaysian food. We left disappointed.
The tahu goreng which is really a simple dish was disappointing. Everything hinges on the sauce.. It was bland and the consistency was a bit too liquid. It is not difficult to make a good sauce for the tahu. The fish (a house specialty) achieved its crispiness but again the sauce disappointed us. It tasted like it was poured straight out of the soya bottle and seasoned with sugar. We had two other dishes which unfortunately were quite forgettable. I had wanted to try something else on the menu, but was outvoted by my friends.
We understand that some of the ingredients for the dishes are difficult to come by, and that may be the reason for the disappointing tastes. Another reason could be that the recipes may have been adulterated to cater to the restaurant`s clientele. Most seemed to be from China, Hongkong and Taiwan.. Without a doubt the restaurant is popular. And we were there when the restaurant was packed. The kitchen may have been too rushed.
As always when it comes to Malaysian restaurants, we tend to lower the bar to accomodate some of the hurdles these restaurants must face, but were still disappointed. And as the hostess, I was embarrassed with the evening.
