This is a "grill it at the table" Japanese BBQ restaurant. We were a bit early for our reservation & waited 10 mins before seated. Our server was very nice and did a great job explaining everything. We had the fixed menu - meat lover & 2 speciality cocktails (interesting way with sake). We had a selection of beef steak and ribs as well as tasty noodles. The service was great. They changed out our grill two times to avoid the char on the grill to stick to our food which was, very nice. Great service, lots of food and really fun. The meal include dessert.

We (three adults, two kids) headed out at about 9pm. Gyu Kaku sounded about our speed. It was nicely decorated and seemed like a pretty hip place. Contemporary music was playing (but not too loud), and a lot of 20-somethings. This isn't what I would necessarily call a "family" restaurant, but the manager (Andy) was very nice. There wasn't space inside right away, but he had us seated within 15 minutes.

We ended up ordering the two-person prix fixe happy hour special and a few extras. There was more than enough protein for everyone at the table. We ordered two extra sides of rice, a salad, a spicy tuna bowl, calamari, and an extra onion (for grilling). The mushrooms were good. The broccoli took much longer than the recommended 3 minutes to cook. Also the broccoli was too heavily salted for our taste. The onion came out quite a but after everything else, which it too bad because it takes a little while to cook.

I recommend cooking the filet mignon and kalbi beef longer than the 30-60 second time. The filet because the pieces are thicker and take a little longer to get to medium-rare or more. The kalbi is better with edges a little singed, but that's our preference, YMMV.

We had the ice cream for desert. Lychee, vanilla, and vanilla with maple. All were very good.

The restroom provided a bottle of mouthwash, something I appreciate and that you rarely see in the US.

I can highly recommend Gyu Kaku.

We were a bit intimidated by all the choices on the menu of this "grill it at the table" restaurant. However, our server Yao was very nice and did a great job explaining everything. We felt like we had made a good choice because a majority of the patrons were young Asians. We had tataki and salmon poke for our appetizer. Delicious! I had miso soup and my daughter and husband had seaweed soup. Also, really good. We had a selection of beef ( skirt steak and kolbi ribs) as well as chicken thighs, garlic shrimp, scallops, mushrooms, zucchini, and sweet onions. The service was great. They changed out our grill two times to avoid the char on the grill to stick to our food which was, very nice. Great service and really fun. Nice locals atmosphere.

It didn't have Sushi which is what we went in there expecting but we had so much fun grilling our dinner and making smores at the table that we forgot we were there for Sushi. Happy Hour which is from 11:30 until 6pm is GREAT value. Definitely worth going there for. Drink specials and as much as half off a lot of their menu items.
