“Wonderful history, but service is lacking”
Reviewed March 19, 2013

The hotel is beautiful and the location cannot be beaten. That being said, the service at checkin and checkout left a lot to be desired, and the housekeeping needs to be more consistent. My room was clean upon checkin for 3 nights, but after the first night of my stay, there was no housekeeping visit that day. I try to be sustainable, but my bathtowels were changed even though I had hung them up as requested for reuse. Upon checkout, I let the front desk staff know about the missed refresh, and was treated abruptly.

TL;DR - beautiful hotel, clean rooms, but you can't count on staff to be either helpful or friendly.

We have stayed at all three downtown Fairmonts and Hotel Van is by far our favorite and the one we always return to. It is a wonderful heritage hotel. Always friendly and profession staff especially on the Gold Floor.

Lobby a bit too open to the street for my liking. Lobby feels like part of street. Nowhere to sit in lobby. Panhandled for empty cans in breezeway while waiting for valet parking. Not sure if valet parking was as slow as it seemed or the street people nearby made it seem slower. Rooms nice and clean but tiny, tiny old fashioned bathroom in our 2 bedroom suite. Nice bath products. Nice pool and gym. Good location if you like downtown. Across street from art gallery, around corner from Robson street shopping. Lots of restaurants nearby. Did not see ambassador dogs.

I have stayed at all the Fairmont’s in Vancouver and it is hard to pick a favorite. Yes the Pacific Rim is brand new and stunning, the waterfront has beautiful views and even the Fairmont at the airport was great, but the hotel Vancouver has so much history. I spent the day just walking around the hotel looking at pictures and reading its history. It's old time class that cannot be beat. We had two connecting rooms that suited us perfectly. We stayed during some renovations so we did not have a view but we still had a wonderful time. You are located right downtown Vancouver close to tons of great restaurants and shopping. The in room dining staff were amazing and the service was prompt and top notch as usual. Fairmont you never disappoint!

Booked a room on the Gold floor and was a little disappointed that the room did not have a window to the outside. There was a window that had a view of an interior brick wall. The room itself was very spacious with a sofa, work desk and a king bed. Bathroom was a little small but adequate. I arrived late and it took over 10 minutes to check in as the only 2 people working were helping another customer. They just let me wait and wait without saying anything. It was a little annoying. Woke up early the next day to have breakfast in the Gold lounge and it was good as usual. The staff on the Gold floor (concierges) were Ok and spent more time with other guests they knew cause they didn't know where I came from. Had some issues with the elevator not working properly which was frustrating for me and other guests. You cannot beat the location of the hotel as you can walk to everything. Shop till you drop right outside the door from boutiques to the mall and of course Robson Street. All sorts of restaurants from Japanese hot dog stand to high end restaurants. A short brisk walk downhill to the waterfront where you can walk along the seawall to Stanley Park. Close to public transportation like the Skytrain and Canada Line. The hotel is old and upkeep is good. If you are looking for modern this is not your hotel. The Fairmont Pacific Rim would be the choice.

Room Tip: Do not book room 919 as it does not have any windows to the outside.

First off, the hotel is an interesting mix of old and new. If you know the history of the hotel, you realize that it has been around for a while and the recent upgrades (I was on the 12th floor, which has been upgraded) are a help. But the rooms have a couple of odd idiosyncrasies which I found to be annoying. First, on initial glance, there were no outlets near the desk. Turns out that they were present, but on the vertical front of the desk and not on the surface or on the lamp as you might expect. I eventually found them (after the first night), but a colleague had the same issue. Second, the shower nozzle in the bathtub could not be lowered sufficiently. For my 5'8" frame, it meant a spray in the face.

The location of the hotel is what makes a stay worthwhile. Two blocks to the Pacific Centre. Surrounded by decent restaurants and shopping. But just be aware that it's doesn't have the same detail as some other high-end chains.

Room Tip: As for an upgraded room. And, while I was there, some external work had privacy blinds covering the...

What a gorgeous place to have a conference. Such a delightful atmosphere, including the two dogs in the lobby. I so enjoyed having a daily visit with them, easing my missing my own 4 legged family members. The hotel is centrally located in downtown Vancouver, one of the most beautiful cities I've visited.
