“Good location, excellent rooms, strange layout.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 3, 2012

My wife and I stayed here for 4 nights and found the hotel, generally, very good but there were areas which badly needed refurbishment, particularly the swimming pool. The accommodation was excellent but with the extremely noisy air conditioning system it made sleeping difficult and if it was turned off the room was too stuffy - a no win situation! We reported this but the situation was not rectified. Getting round the hotel was a nightmare as there were insufficient signs to direct you to where you wanted to go. Breakfast was expensive with little help from the staff in explaining the menu. The only consolation were the friendly reception staff.

Room Tip: Good location but if you can put up with the noisy air conditioning then ok.

This Hotel is not one I would recomend. I booked a corporate \king the most expensive room yet found myself in a room smaller than a double queen, only one one bedside table, one chair yet booked for two people Sitting area of as I said one chair was next to what was termed the Air conditioner which was set at close to 20 degrees. Far too hot. We did have a balcony of sorts which ran past other rooms with old Big mac cups and papers plus loads of fag ends. We wondered why the pool was always empty and soon foind out. It was so cold my wife who happily swims in the sea found it freezing, I and another guest could not even get in. Tried the hot tub. Now that was hot. So hot I nealy boiled.
When I complained the first night one of the staff I was told the the Hotewl had a policy of not having the airconditioner go below a certain level to save money and regarding the room, well I had booked through an agency not direct. On our last day with check out at 11pm, we were stuck there fore three days, the maid knocked at 9am to ask what time we would be vacating the room. First time that has happened to us.
My advice is steer well clear.

Room Tip: Go some where else.

Stayed 2 nights on the third floor facing away from the harbour and directly into the air conditioning unit. View was unimpressive but it was very hard to see it through the filthy windows and the visiting gulls who came to drink at the water puddles near the air conditioning unit.
Double glazing had been partially applied to the window to reduce the sound of the air conditioning unit.
I felt we received a below average room mainly because we had booked directly with the hotel's web site and achieved a good price.

Room Tip: Avoid the 3rd floor.

We had a week in Vancouver - and this hotel was really well situated to explore the tourist "musts", being within walking distance of just about everything and just up the road from the railway station for the airport. Hotel staff were friendly and helpful; front-desk staff helped us with trips, directions and airport check-in (we deliberately avoided their very busy times when cruise ships caused bulges in check in/outs). The room was, indeed, small; you need to plan what items you can reasonably leave in your cases as there is very limited drawer space, and there is a knack to getting and-and-around the bathroom door (with little space/hooks for clothes towels - so plan it!). However, once mastered, the room and bathroom were fine - the bed was clean and comfortable and the rooms were clean and well maintained. We were initially dismayed to find our room was literally wrapped around the lift-shaft and we were two doors away from vending machines - we were worried about noise - but honestly, it was not a problem at all. Sound insulation must have been very good. We were not troubled by the noise of other guests either - even when there was a big match in the stadium over the road. We had breakfast in Moxie's every day (it was part of the hotel and you can sign it to your room) and it was great - set us up well for days of exploring. We also ate there most evenings - convenient and good food; friendly, entertaining staff. (It sounds noisy as the lift doors open - but do not be put off - it seems to be a quirk of the accoustics!) Do not try to leave or return to your room in a hurry as the lift is slow! We did not actually get round to using the pool, but it looked good and a guest in the lift commented on its being fine.Despite its quirks, we found the hotel to be good value for money and we would definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: We were in the North tower, so do not know if our comments apply to the South Tower.

This was the host hotel for a beach volleyball tournament we were attending. On check in the front staff were very rude and unwelcoming. The gal who I was dealing with mumbled something about how busy she was and did not even attempt a smile. The room was average for the price. Parking was expensive but it is downtown Vancouver. The air conditioning did not work in our room the first night but they did fix it by the second day. The ice machine ran out of ice and showers were lukewarm at best. We were given 2 towels only - not sure what you would do if there were more than 2 in the room. Overall we found this hotel very rundown and would not stay there again. On a positive note the fellow who checked us out was very friendly and the city itself is absolutely beautiful.

When we arrived, the room we were out in was not cleaned yet (9:00pm) and when we asked about the mess, we were moved immediately. The next room appeared to have been cleaned but found half a dozen really long black hairs through out the bed sheets.
We traveled to Vancouver and stayed at a bunch of low budget hotels and decided to splurge at the Sandman. For the price our expectations were a little high but came out disappointed.
Great location downtown and kept up well,
Too pricy for quality, and unfriendly staff.
I'm sure any other day our experience would be much better.
