I knew dining here was no bargain, but wanted fine food - and got it. But if you've reached that age when background noise interferes with hearing your companions, watch out. Even though we were only a table of four, we all struggled to hear and adjourned to another restaurant for dessert, coffee and a chance to hear without a struggle. If you want to visit with friends, find another location.

Excellent waitstaff, very attentive during our early dinner reservation. Roasted carrot salad lovely and fun - fresh dill not overpowering but rather helped pull things together. Pork belly app intensely flavorful. Yellowfin tuna great, lighter entrée although plenty of food, but the presentation was a really nice commingling of flavors and textures, including about the best Brussels sprouts you'll ever taste. I had a very generous slow braised lamb shoulder that was dark but with a hint of citrus.

Great service, fantastic food - very pricey but worth it! The desserts were especially good. Wine is severely overpriced but I found that true of all Vancouver restaurants.

Hawksworth proves the adage: by the time the media starts raving about a restaurant, it's too late. It has all the symptoms of a restaurant where the founding chef has moved on to other interests and left people in charge who are slaves to recipes and don't taste the food. Our appetizers were on the border of OK and good (although my $36 plate of "special" prosciutto that was supposed to "change the way I think about prosciutto" as the waiter promised fell considerably short of that goal. In the end it was a good, overpriced dish...which I think rates "OK." My wife's halibut was just OK (although we make better halibut at home, which should not happen at this type of restaurant), and my elk loin was passable but south of "good", and downright bad if you factor in inedible cabbage/bacon concoction that came with it. (See previous note about chefs not tasting the food -- nobody in their right mind would have wished this oppressively salty pile of glop on a customer paying $400 for two).

How this restaurant won McLean's "best restaurant in Canada" award is anyone's guess. It's not the best restaurant in the neighborhood, let alone Canada. Unfortunately our waiter didn't bother to ask us if we liked our meals, which clearly we didn't, given the volume of food left on our plates. So that leaves us no choice but to go public with a negative review.

We have eaten here a few times and we have never been disappointed. The service is second to none. The atmosphere is elegant but with a casual note. The drinks are generous and well done. The food is superb, but sometimes the appetizers are a hit or a miss. I would recommend it to anyone with discerning tastes. Great experience. The only caveat is that it gets a bit too loud when full. Also, don't know why they are charging $4 for the bread basket. At their prices it should be included and should not have to be ordered. I guess they are going the New York way.
