This restaurant is a gem! small wonder that the chef won the title, Canada 's Top Chef.

This is the third time we have eaten here in the last six months. Try the fixed combinations with wine pairings.

We searched web Urban Spoon and Yelp for vegetarian places, this did not come up. Made a reservation on Friday for Saturday at 6:30, but the place was only 3/4 full, maybe the time of year not the food or service. Try the tasting menu, outstanding and creative food.

My husband chose this for his birthday dinner although it was somewhat out of our normal dining experiences and, although somewhat hesitant after some not so stellar reviews, we decided to see how we liked it. Liked it? We absolutely loved the food! Despite being two very different tastes, we enjoyed the fun of sharing each beautiful and delicious dish. After the first two...the tuna tartare and gazpacho... we didn't think the rest of the dishes we chose could possibly be as good but they were. The mussels in a light curry sauce and eggplant continued to surprise us with the interesting and delighful combination of flavours. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable and the dishes arrived in perfectly timed succesion. The finish to our great evening was a cone of the most delicious, hot from the oven, orange baby madeleines. It is obvious that Dale MacKay has been influenced by his international experiences in many great kitchens around the world but has managed to capture something of Vancouver in his cooking to give us something different and of very high quality in a city that does have some good restaurants. We say to anyone more used to traditional dining (and who doesn't mind the rather stark surroundings) to give this a try and let your tastebuds decide. It might not be to everyone's taste but we did see a real cross section of diners the night we were there from a single man who read his book, had a glass of wine and couple of dishes (a local?) to obvious tourists who liked the menu outside and eventually a large table of business people. It's a pity that licking one's plate in public is not acceptable as we would definitely have liked to do that!

Celebrated a friend's birthday at Esemble Restaurant. Started with the "Miss Madison" cocktail, which was an excellent choice although a few less ice cubes would have been preferrable. The Oysters were fresh and some of the best I'd had. The Shoulder of lamb was exquisitely prepared and unusual, and delicious My friend had the roasted beet salad, also excellent. The chocolate fondant was a wonderful finale to dinner. Good choice of wine and the service was friendly and efficient.

On July 5th we returned to Ensemble hoping to recreate our very positive over-the-top visit in July of 2011. Were we disappointed. That year, the food and the service was the best - the restaurant was crowded and noisy but that was ignored due to the creative, excellent dishes. This year we entered at 7pm to a restaurant not half full. We were seated and given menus but after a more than 10 minute wait, we flagged the manager and asked if we could place a drink order. We ordered bread but it did not come until our appetizers arrived. We had to ask where our second order of drinks were as they were so delayed. I asked for a steak knife for my hanger steak (I actually had no cutlery) but when one never came and our waitress was nowhere, we asked another server for one. Our food was very good although one person in our party felt the portion was very small for the price. Having eaten in many fine restaurants in San Francisco, and Vancouver has an equally great culinary scene, there are just too many good food places with top notch service too. The service is killing this restaurant. Wonder if they will wake up before it's too late?
