“The place to stay in Vancouver!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2012

Forget anonymous downtown hotels and busy traffic- stay here instead! Casa Matea is wonderful- 2 individually decorated rooms, a cosy shared sittingroom with books and games, and seats out in the garden... all situated in a quiet area, but with good bus links to the city centre. It's also easy to get to the shopping area of Kitsilano itself.

Matea is a wonderful hostess, who was consistently helpful- staying here feels like making a new friend. Breakfasts were absolutely delicious- a feast of several courses that will keep you going all day! Me being gluten-free was no problem, and Matea even gave us a packed breakfast for the morning we left, as we had to leave very early to catch the ferry.

Casa Matea embodies everything a good B&B should be, and more: friendly, individual and somewhere you look forward to coming back to.

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at Casa Matea, which is situated in a very quiet area in Kitsilano, near UBC and Vancouver downtown.

Matea is a very friendly, young but capable hostess, and a good and very creative cook.
Her breakfasts are ample, delicious and very filling. Every day she comes up with different breakfasts, and she uses a lot of fresh ingredients from her garden.

Matea gives excellent advise about where to go and how to get there.

TIP: the website for the public transport in Vancouver is www.translink.ca
There are several busstops in walking distance from Matea's place (she will explain where to find them), and you can buy daytickets in the 7 Eleven around the corner of her street.
They cost 9 CAD for adults and 7 CAD for children of 5-13 yr, for 14-19 year old students with a GOcard and for 65+ seniors.
With the daypass you can take as many busses, metros, skytrains and busboats or ferries as you like for 1 day. Once you get hold of a Vancouver transportation map it's easy to plan your movements.

Matea really goes out of her way to make sure her guests are taken care of.
We had forgotten to take out our Canada Parks passes when we had returned our rental car to the agency downtown. It took several phone calls before Matea located the right people and she made sure that they retrieved our passes before the car was rented again.
She also lend me her computer in order to check my emails, as I didn't bring my own computer .

We stayed in the Sol room, which has a shared bathroom with the Luna room.
We would have liked to stay another night, but Matea closed her B&B down for the season as she wanted to take a holiday herself.

We can certainly recommend this B&B to anyone who wants to stay at a quiet and homely place, where you get a tasty and hearty breakfast and where you can enjoy the company of a congenial hostess.

From the moment we saw the photos on the website, we knew Casa Matea was a special place and it exceeded our expectations. Staying at Matea's is like staying with your grandmothers and your hip, young friend's at the same time.Matea's homemade breakfasts are incredible. Not only are they simply delicious and nutritious, they are so filling you will not need to eat lunch. This place is a gem. It's very warm, charming and inviting and everything has an artist's touch, including the food. Matea is creative and makes different breakfasts each day, and always with a special homemade pastry (crepes, a warm cheese-filled pastry and more).

She gives great advice about where to go. This place may be off the beaten path, but that's what we loved most about it. We loved being able to use Matea's guest bikes to explore the nearby forest, bogs, beaches, and restaurants on Broadway and 4th streets. This was the favorite part of our in addition to Stanley Park.

Amazing, high-end restaurant quality breakfasts, a charming setting, a wonderful host and complimentary bikes... all for a very affordable price... what more can one ask for?

Staying with Matea was the perfect ending for our holidays. After camping for three weeks, we loved every second in the house. Matea herself is, a said before, truly wonderful. Her pancakes with applecompote were just delicious, her company great. It is out of center, which we liked very much as it was a nice and quiet, and a very green neighborhood, yet still only 20 minutes from downtown (by bus). Bikes were also available which was a treat (depending on the weather of course). Would definitely go back!

Matea is a wonderful host who goes out of her way to ensure you have a great stay. We started our days at the B&B with some of the most creative and delicious breakfasts we've had in years. Yes they're all vegetarian, but even the biggest carnivore will fall for the fresh local ingredients that she uses.

We could count on her for tips on local restaurants, attractions and public transport. If you just need a couple of bus tickets to get into town, you can buy them right at the B&B.

Speaking of which: the closest bus stop is about 2 minutes away and it takes about 30 minutes to get to the Waterfront Skytrain station. If you don't want to go that far, there's lots to see, shop and eat on 4th Avenue just around the corner from the guesthouse. Or you might be tempted to go to Kitsilano beach, a good 15 minutes by bus. You'll need just a little longer to walk from the B&B to the huge Pacific Sprits park nearby. All in all, it's quite easy to stay here without necessarily needing a car.

We found the price to be very reasonable and the room was comfortable and spotless. Yes, the bathroom is shared and noise travels easily in this old house, but the fact that there are only two rooms offsets the impact of those two minor details.

It 'been a great pleasure to know Ms. Matea by Casa Matea. A person so helpful and very good cook is not easy to find. I consider myself fortunate in having met and spent 4 days in a really nice home. The house is typical Canadian, a little 'old, but for what has charm all its own. I stayed in the room Luna (Moon) that is bigger and more comfortable. The breakfasts Matea never forget, with the heady scents filled almost the whole house, a show! The cool stuff, made the same morning, the taste and look great! I strongly advise you to go to reach the city because Matea is really simple: just 100 meters there is a trolleybus and quiet location in 20-25 minutes to get downtown. The Casa Matea is also in the VIP area near the beautiful and magnificent villas with the University Centre with excellent museums, parks and long beaches. Pacific there is intoxicating scent of the ocean, while enjoying the mountain view over the city. The whole city of Vancouver is beautiful, I liked a lot and come back for sure and also in the Casa Matea. Thanks a lot Matea again for all your willingness and kindness and affection shown to me with the spontaneity of a person with a big heart and good cheer. Many regards by Nada from Italy!!!

We really enjoyed Casa Matea. Matea was a delightful host - her attention to detail in everything from the room set up (kettle, teas, chocolates, biscotti), the lovely breakfasts (and beautiful sun room) - everything was well thought through and allowed for a sense of peace, rest and beauty. It is within reach of many amenities, the food was amazing (and well-presented) and one felt very welcomed. I would highly recommend it.
