This place is a total crap hole. They claimed that they've just been renovated but all they really did was just a cheap face lift to cover up the inner structure issues, which you will soon discover when you step foot into the room. I've never had a worst experience even staying at a low quality motel.

It's located in the middle of the ghetto within a dirty and dangeous neighborhood. To get to the parking lot you'll have to drive in from the back alley where we saw a prostitute shaving her legs with the puddle of water on the ground. The parking lot is so small there's only one way in, you'll have to back up your car in order to get out.

The lobby and reception desk is relatively well docorated and vested with a sweet orange scent but don't let that first look fool you. The only request that we had with our room was for it to be non-smoking, little did we know it also came with a view of three huge power transformers outside of our one and only small window. The fire sprinkle pipes were exposed hanging down from the ceiling. The mattress was such low quality, little weight on one side will tilt the other side up. The bathroom was really small and shower water switches from cold to boiling hot every 5 secs. The shampoo provided doesn't foam up and it smelled just like the strong sweet orange scent from the lobby.

My finace and I were only staying there for one night so we were trying to be tolerent and not let it spoil our last day trip in Vancouver. We tried to get rested up to fly out the next day but we were waken at 6am by a strong sufficating cigarette smoke. We checked the hallway and the window but no source of smoke there, it's only in our room that we could smell the smoke. Just when we thought we were being too sensitive, we walked into the bathroom and realized the smoke smell was actually coming down from the exhaust fan! How on earth is that possible?! It was so bad that it filled the bathroom and spilled into the room.

We could no longer go back to sleep so we went downstairs to get our complimentary breakfast. We didn't have hopes for anything well, just wanted to get away from our filthy room. The breakfast came with either Tea or Coffee, white or wheat toast, sunny side up eggs or scrambled, and hashbrowns. I ordered tea, wheat toast and scrambled egg, my fiance asked for coffee, white toast and sunny side up. When our tea and coffee came, the obsurdly rude waitress told us and I quote "You'll have to share the spoon." She put down one spoon, turned and left without any explanation. I could understand that they could run out of spoons but she could at least provide us a fork, a straw, or even a knife for christ's sake!!

Howard Johnson at Granville in Vancouver is absolutely the ultimate worst hotel I've stayed at. DO NOT STAY HERE!!!!!

  • Liked — The lobby is decievingly well decorated
  • Disliked — Bad neigborhood, small room, horrible window view, cigarette-filled non-smoking room, rude waitress

we stayed in this hotel back in october and found it to be not that bad. some of the reviews on here make it out to be in a location that is like a vice area. if you are put off by peep shows then yes there are a couple across the road, and there are some beggars dotted around, but there are beggars in nottingham where i live and probably just like any other big city!!! however i digress, if you turn left at the front of the hotel and walk around the corner the street you are on is nothing like granville street at all. you will just have to trust me on this, but i made the mistake of thinking this hotel was in an awful location, but is not that bad.

the rooms were a ok and quite clean, but do ask for a room at the back of the hotel if you are concerned about noise.

all in all this hotel for a stay in vancouver is ok. dont be put off by all the negative reviews.

please take into consideration that all major cities have beggars, it just seems that some people have seen afew loitering around this one. ignore them or be plite and say no.

Hotel was nice and clean, decent included breakfast at the attached Wings restaurant and excellent value for money. It's only drawback really is the area in which it is situated - lots of "peep show" type places around and the location is generally rather seedy and well populated by suspiciously well dressed beggars. That said however, we didn't ever feel threatened at any time day or night. Wouldn't stay here with children or as a single female, but for everyone else it's just fine. Helpful staff and a decent sized room at the rear of the hotel made our 3 night stay here very comfortable

The staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel was comfortable enough although the room was quite small and the water wasn't particularly hot. My main concern was the area in which the hotel is situated. There are quite a number of x-rated venues around the hotel - not the ideal area for a family or a woman on her own to stay in.

We stayed at the Howard Johnson as the price (especially) and the location were what we were after. It was our first time in Vancouver though. The Hotel itself is presentable, with a moderate size lobby, elevators to all floors and clean throughout. The rooms themselves are more on the small side than moderate, but with 2 double beds in it (twin share), you wouldn't expect too much room left anyway. There was only just enough room left to put our 2 suitcases on the floor. The bathroom was clean and fully functional.
If you do want to walk out of your Hotel and be in touristy Vancouver, then stay up closer to Robson Street or even up Davie St, this part of Granville is not too pretty (it felt safe enough though), but in the evening you're in the nightclub area, in fact, a nightclub is part of the same building as the H.J. (Thankfully we couldn't hear it from our room) There's a couple of okay breakfast places next door or just along Granville, so the area is not terrible, but just not what you want to wake up to and be the first thing you see of Vancouver.

This was the worst hotel i have ever stayed at and i hope that no one has to put up with the same horrible experience that we had to endure. My husband and I are easy going and dont let much bother us, but this hotel... it was something else! As we walked to our hotel from where our bus driver dropped us off (he didnt want to drive down Granville Street, that should have been our first clue!) we noticed many 20 cent peep shows on the other side of the road, there were people selling crack and trying to entice us with gambling on the street. As I said we are easy going, we just carried on walking, that didnt bother us to much. We found our hotel and checked in. The room was tiny and dirty, the bathroom was nice. We could hear the music from downstairs in our room from about 2pm. The music got louder until the walls were visably vibrating and there was ripples in my glass of water on the night stand. We put in our earplugs but no way could we sleep. We went down to reception and enquired about the noise (11pm) they said that "it was the nightclub who leased the floor below the hotel rooms, we were in the quietest room, they were fully booked and there was nothing they could do about it" they then turned away from us and ignored us until we left. The music turned off at arouns 5am and we got a few hours sleep. People were also climbing in the fire escape next to our room all night to visit rooms on our floor, they stayed an hour and then left, if you remember the peep shows down the road you can work out what was going on.
We were supposed to stay 3 nights but checked out early. The management apologised and said that the night staff should have asked them to turn the music off. They were however not surprised that we were leaving. Terrible for a chain hotel with an otherwise good reputation.

  • Liked — Nothing at all, sadly! Leaving!
  • Disliked — Everything! No exaggeration!
  • Tips/Secrets — Don not stay here no matter what!
