Owner description: An oasis of tranquility in an otherwise bustling Chinatown, Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Classical Chinese Garden is the first ever Chinese garden built outside of China and is a model of a Ming Dynasty scholar's home. It is a non-profit organization connecting cultures & communities through festivals, live music, art exhibits, theatre, education & wellness programs. In 2011, the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Garden was named one of the "Top Ten City Gardens" in the world by National Geographic in their publication "Secret Journeys of a Lifetime".

I have a historical interest in Dr. Sun Yat-Sen. I was very interested in checking out this attraction. It was somewhat disappointing to see the lack of maintenance and filthiness of the pond and gardens. Obviously, this attraction has seen better days. There was a man there randomly talking to anyone and everyone. His non-stop chatter broke the tranquility of the garden. Maybe it's the surroundings of the garden, but it definitely needs to be spruced up.

There are 2 parts to this garden. One half is free and is more of a treelined park and the other half is a designed garden. The entrance fee is slightly expensive, but then Vancouver is an expensive city. The garden is well maintained and has many twists and turns so that you get differerent vistas. If you can spare the time and money, it is worth a visit.

I was very impressed with these beautiful gardens and really appreciated the wonderful tour. Our guide was so enthusiastic it was hard not to be as excited as she was at the many aspects of Chinese culture that are showcased in this garden.

At $14 per adult, we expected so much more. What we got was a small courtyard with a couple of attached rooms and courtyards that contained a couple of trees and flowering shrubs. You could have seen everything in 10 minutes. We decided to take the tour (perhaps it would illuminate the garden for us)... Another bad idea. There just isn't enough here to warrant the price of admission.

Dear Cara

Thank you for your comments. With your feedback in mind we will work hard to make sure every visitor is able to enjoy and experience this truly unique heritage site and urban oasis.

If you are ever in Vancouver again please let me know (marketing@vancouverchinesegarden.com) and I will happily show you some more of the beautiful details that make up the Garden and share stories you may have missed the last time you were here. We also offer Chinatown Walking Tours, Gong Fu Cha Tea Ceremonies and Tai Chi lessons.

The Garden also has staff and comment forms at hand 7 days a week. It is really helpful for us to hear these comments first hand so we can deal with any issues straight away but I am also very glad you left a comment here so we can work to improve our services.

Many thanks,

Gillian
