The best thing about this gallery is the exterior of the building itself. It's a nice looking structure, and makes a great spot to stop for a few photos.

But I wouldn't recommend going inside, because the gallery itself... well, it sucks. Boring, lame exhibits and a really dull interior space.

As some have noted, the gift shop has some quite neat items, but is *ridiculously* overpriced.

I was so looking forward to visiting this art gallery, as I expected to see some really interesting and high quality collections(since Vancouver is considered to be a world class city). I enjoyed the Emily Carr paintings. The Cone sister's collection, which included works by Matisse, was interesting, mainly for the text and period photos. Otherwise, the art work and photo exhibits were mediocre, ridiculous, silly, ugly or pathetic. Much of it was accompanied by lengthy explanations from the "artists". True art, for me, needs no explanation.

Large expansive Art Gallery. We went intentionally to the Monet exhibit. They do except AAA and other discounts for admission.

Was lucky enough to catch the last day of Matisse exhibition. The Cone sisters from Baltimore were ladies ahead of their time in putting together such a collection. Found the history and the art fascinating the gallery is well laid out easy to navigate and the exhibits have a good commentary.

So glad that you were able to catch our 'Collecting Matisse' exhibition - it was a very busy last day! All the best on your travels from the UK.

Having been to many art galleries on my trip I was looking forward to this one, however I was highly disappointed. The collections are small and not very varied, it was missing many key artists (I was shocked to learn that they housed no Dali, Miro, Warhol or many other popular artist). When entering the building I was told that it would take me all day to walk through the gallery, however it took me under two and a half hours. The only reason I have given the gallery two stars is because the gift shop is amazing. I would highly recommend the gift shop, however I would say to avoid the overpriced gallery itself!

Thank you for taking the time to write a review on your recent visit to the Vancouver Art Gallery - I am sorry that you were disappointed. We are very proud to feature a compelling blend of contemporary and historic presentations that have become the Vancouver Art Gallery’s signature. Over the next year, the Gallery’s programming includes celebrated Haida carver Charles Edenshaw, 17th century Dutch and Flemish art, watercolours by beloved Canadian artist Emily Carr, graphics by American comic artist Art Spiegelman and the first major exhibition of its kind, GRAND HOTEL which will span two floors of the Gallery, charting the evolution of the hotel room. I hope that you will be able to return to our city and to re-visit the Gallery to experience one of these world-class exhibitions.
