This place is more Fawlty Towers than the cutesie-pie Cotswold guesthouse that you might assume from the name and photo. But don't let that put you off. It's a good spot if you're an experienced traveller prepared to take things as they come, but not if you're a fussy person who gets in a huff if everything isn't exactly to your liking.
First let me list the negatives, at least those that some guests have pointed out to me.
1. You might at times get the impression that this guest house is run by Manuel's Asian in-laws. Communication can be a problem.
2. The place is eccentrically furnished and eclectically equipped. If you have your own kitchen, you might find that some important items are missing, while there's other stuff that no-one would ever use. Also, not everything might work properly.
3. This is definitely not a place for cat-phobes.
4. The continental breakfast is, shall we say, not what the French would understand by the term "petit dejeuner". But there's plenty of it.
5. The standard of cleaning is variable.
Against that, please consider:
1. Location, location, location. The Manor is situated 10 minutes walk from Broadway/City Hall train station and the 99 cross-town bus. We have actually walked all the way into the City from here. But note that there is a steep hill between the station and the guest house. The neighbourhood is quiet and attractive - mostly two-storey classic Vancouver 1920s houses in a leafy street. Fine views of the city and mountains to the north as you walk down to the station.
2. The hostess, Linda, is a charming lady, who takes great pride in her garden. Her son, Marx, who has more English, is the person you might most deal with, and he will try to sort out any problems if you raise them with him politely.
3. Great garden! Lovely place to take breakfast or just to lounge.
4. Complimentary self-serve laundry is a bonus.
5. The wifi is good.
In summary, The Manor reminds me of some of the places I have stayed in in provincial China. Not exactly the Hilton, but with charms of its own.
