I'm sorry to write a bad review but I can't help myself. We visited Vancouver in late May and had reservations at Rosellen. I have been travelling my entire life and I have never checked-out of a hotel the same night I checked-in...
It started when we arrived and could not get into the building b/c the code provided was not working (we were checking in after 6pm). Another visitor came out and opened the door and told us she could not get in either but kept calling and eventually the operator let her in. You are provided a code to open the box where you find your keys. Every other guest's keys are in this box so there is no security. It doesn't make sense.
When we returned to our car to get our luggage we were accosted by a racoon. We could not get up the stairs to get back to the hotel b/c the racoon was domesticated enough to not be afraid of us. It ended up working out b/c the homeless man who lives under the stairs told us the racoon was harmless. I felt like I was on Punked b/c it was one thing after another. We did finally get into our room - it has not received any updating since 1970 and there were stains on the carpet. Needless to say we called and made arrangements to leave the next morning. We had a difficult time finding another room so we made our way to Victoria. The one positive point is that the management did not give us a hard time about leaving right away. They only charged us the one night and were very professional. I feel bad writing this review but this hotel almost ruined our trip and we had to go through additional expenses and trouble to rectify the issue...and I wouldn't wish that on any traveler.

RosellenVancouver, Manager at Rosellen Suites At Stanley Park, responded to this reviewResponded August 16, 2011

One of the saddest moments for Rosellen staff (or typically any hotel staff) is when a guest walks away unhappy. That is why the entire team is trained and empowered to resolve guest issues on the spot. Sometimes that may mean moving a guest to a different suite that is more appropriate for an individual guest’s preferences. Or, on a rare occasion that may mean helping the guest to find accommodations at an alternative hotel that better fits a guest’s preferences. It is regretful that this reviewer did not have the experience expected with Rosellen Suites and it is most appreciated that time was taken to share the thoughts and kind words for how the situation was handled. In response to some of the comments posted....

Rosellen Suites at Stanley Park does try to provide as much information on the property as possible through its’ website, reservation confirmations and, to the extent possible, through third party sites where there may be limited control on what is displayed to a guest on those sites. This includes providing information on the office hours and instructions for guests arriving after office hours. As was the case with this particular reservation, a duty manager is available at all times by simply hitting the pre-programmed button on the en-suite phone and/or by dialling the number on the intercom at the front door that is posted in two different places so guests are clear on what to dial to reach a hotel representative. As a small hotel where many guests have been coming back to stay for many many years, there is a bit of a familial atmosphere and, as was the case experienced here, guests do help out other guests when they see someone in need. It’s a very neighbourly environment.

The system for late arrivals has been successfully used by Rosellen for many years and has been used in most countries by smaller hotels as well as in growing numbers in North American vacation rentals to great success in more recent years. Though the concerns presented are very much appreciated, this is the very first comment of concern for the current system in all the years the hotel has operated and, as the late arrival instructions are included on every hotel confirmation, if any guest after reading the instructions were to have a concern and contacted the hotel in advance, it would be the pleasure of the duty manager to arrange a specific time to meet the guest after office hours to personally assist with their check in. The worst case scenario is that guest service assistance, whether the office is open or closed, is but a phone call away 24 hours per day.

In regards to “being accosted by a racoon”, again, it is with regret that this made the reviewer uncomfortable. It has been a growing concern in many cities that animals of all sorts are moving into the cities as their natural homes are becoming encroached on at a rapid pace. Located steps from Stanley Park, this is certainly the case in the West End and it is also the case throughout Vancouver. There is a family of racoons that make their home in a cedar tree just inside the entrance to the park and they do make an occasional unexpected visit around their neighbourhood. It is possible to find a wandering Canadian Goose or rare skunk on a stroll around Vancouver as well. Most guests find this part of the charm of the city. We are sorry that this reviewer met up with what may have been an unruly racoon.

As for the “homeless man living under the stairs”, there is a growing challenge with homelessness in every major city. They do not live at or near the hotel. They do make daily pilgrimage to collect bottles and cans for recycling. Many of the neighbour and the hotel save these items and place them in bags near the garbage for the homeless. Though the city and local business are working to resolve this sad plight, the homeless are part of the local culture. One of the many great things about Vancouver is the ability that, regardless who you are including race, gender, economic status, etc., everyone co-exists in a peaceful and supportive environment.

Regarding the suites, Rosellen offers two very distinct options in sizes ranging from 600 square feet to 1,900 square feet. This includes Classic suites with great value and a homey atmosphere where guests feel comfortable resting their feet on the coffee table and Personal-ity suites for those preferring the more modern amenities of travel such as flat screen TV(s), DVD/CD player, iPod docking station, upgraded bedding and a more contemporary feel.

The recommended strategy for travelers when booking a hotel that they are not familiar with is to visit the direct website of the hotel including taking time to read the FAQ section. When reading reviews, read multiple reviews and look for trends in the comments. Above all, if there are questions or concerns of any kind pick up the phone and call the hotel. Your vacation is an investment and hotels are a large part of that expense so spending a few minutes to confirm you are making the right choice in accommodations is time well spent.

Thanks for taking time to share your comments. Glad that the wedding and your visit to Vancouver went well. A coffee tip for your next trip, Blenz is the closest coffee shop to the hotel. Walk out the front door turn right and walk 2 blocks, Starbuck's is 5 blocks away and if you want to enjoy a morning coffee with the local shop the staff recommends Delaney's on Denman! There is also complimentary coffee in your suite if you need a starter before heading to the cafe. Looking forward to your return.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Rosellen Suites. The apartment was large and spacious with two double rooms and a foldout couch in the lounge. Everything was clean and tidy, although the decor seemed a little dated, which was nothing to worry about.

The location is excellent, being so close to Stanley Park, although those on business in the city might want to consider something more downtown. For us it was great being able to go for walks and would be much quieter than anything downtown.

The kitchen was well-equipped and there was a small dining table with chairs - not really big enough for the six of us, but we weren't doing proper sit-down dinners anyway.

We were awoken at 1am one night by the fire alarm, which was less than ideal - especially seeing as there was no manager onsite. We waited (initially outside in the freezing cold, and then in the foyer) for a good 20 minutes before we were allowed back to our rooms. The next morning there was a note of apology from the manager.

Overall, the fire alarm experience wasn't enough to put us off (these things happen), and we would happily go back to stay, especially for the great price we got.

Thanks for your comments and for making Rosellen Suites your home. Apologies for the unexpected fire alarm. After a little over done cooking in one of the suites, the guest dismantled the fire alarm and the fire department had a bit of a challenge locating the exact problem. Thankfully, it was only 20 minutes and not a true emergency. Your patience and understanding during that time is most appreciated. We look forwar dto your return.

Our group of four couples rented two suites here recently. We were very pleased with the roomy suites, the outstanding service from the front office staff and the excellent location. For the price, you couldn't do any better. We would highly recommend the Rosselen Suites to anyone who has an opportunity to visit this beautiful city.

Had 1 bedroom apartment for 2 nights, fully self contained with kitchen, our apartment comfortable and clean, couple of streets away from Denman street restaurants and Safeway, Could have walked to Stanley park if we had time. Quaint lift (only small). Underground parking a bit tight (especially if you driving a left hand car for the first time!). We''ll be back.

Room Tip: We booked ahead a few months and got a good rate of CAD149.
