My husband and myself along with another couple stayed at Jericho for one night. We had a bedroom with a double and 2 singles. I don't know what the dorms are like. It was a perfect location for us as we were kayaking minutes away and wanted to spend some time at the beach. I live just outside of Vancouver and come in to the city many times for the day. There is no better place to stay in Vancouver that is this close to the ocean and this affordable. It is surrounded by parks and Jericho Sailing Centre is a great place to rent kayaks or sailboats and enjoy a beer in the evening with the best view in Vancouver. I was slightly sceptical after reading recent reviews related to cleanliness but all of us found the place extremely clean.....floors, rooms and especially the bathrooms. There has apparently been a change in management and perhaps this is the reason. There is a locked room to store bicycles and parking out front was $5.00 for 24 hours. Staff were great.

This hostel is apparently an old military barracks. We decided to visit Vancouver with little planning. I tried to book at HI Downtown and HI Central but they were both full, so we fell back on Jericho beach.

It was our first time and the place was not very clean. The barrack style accommodation with a set of four beds separated by partitions. Floor was dirty in sleeping areas and bathrooms.

It's right on the beach, but quite a trek to downtown, so if you want to be close to downtown, avoid this location. We didn't stay the entire duration we reserved due to location. Since we couldn't get any room in HI Downtown or HI Central, but found us beds at SameSun, we moved there.

There's a moderate amount of parking in front of the hostel, however it's something like $7 CDN a day.

I have stayed in hostels all across Europe, including some pretty bad ones. But to find the worst, dirtiest hostel ever, I had to come back to my native country. DO NOT STAY HERE. The floors had literally not been cleaned in weeks, there was visible dirt accumulating and garbage strewn everywhere. Don't even get me started on the bathrooms, particularly the showers. Disgusting. I didn't want to walk anywhere or touch anything.

Dorm rooms are cavernous and house 18 people. Needless to say there is very little peace and quiet. Between the snoring, people coming and going all through the night and early morning, the heat and the complete lack of air flow, I did not sleep at all.

Yes, the hostel is close to the beach, but that's it. It's a hike just to get to the bus stop, totally inconvenient. If you only have a few days in Vancouver, don't waste it getting to and from a hostel that's not even worth it. Spend a few extra dollars and stay somewhere decent.

I stayed in a private room with my boyfriend. It was mostly clean, with the exception of the floors which hadn't been vacuumed for a couple days. My biggest complaint was the value. We paid over $70 and I don't think it was worth it. The large, shared bathroom was outdated with shower curtains falling off their rods and growing mildew. There was no private area in between the shower and the rest of the bathroom to change. I've been to state parks with nicer bathrooms. I think the stay was worth more around $55.

The hostel grounds were lovely and it was close to the beach. It's a bit of a trek to downtown.

The breakfast was so-so and overpriced for the quality.

I've only been to one other hostel (Portland, OR), so perhaps my view on hostels is a little skewed.

We stayed at the hostel for somewhere different to stay in Vancouver as we were there inbetween flights for a few days. We'd been around the city so much we wanted somewhere different.
The area is absolutly beautiful. There is a lake and bike paths, beach volleyball ducks, rabbits and squirrels everywhere. If your into outdoor things this place is great.
its about a 20min bus ride into downtown vancouver. Bus stop is about a 3 minute walk from the front door.

At first we were a bit like umm uh oh where have we booked cos its a bit out of the way from everything. But once we'd settled in and stayed the first night it was lovely. We checked in the first day it opened for the season and there were a few opening day glitches that were inconvenient and were put down to the staff not being organised in time for opening day. There is a cafe downstairs that was not fully operational the first couple of days with very limited menu because of the small number of guests. We walked the 10 minutes to the closest shops. Also there is a very good cafe on the beach at the club that is open to the public. Had the most amazing views of the city and the mountains. THe food was very good - a burger and chips about $9.
The kitchen area in the hostel has fridge and food lockers but not that many seats for the amount of people it can house. So eat early or late to get a seat. Vending machines there also. Hostel has free wireless internet for laptop users and a few computer stations set up.

We stayed in a private room on the second floor without a bathsoom Walls are this so you can hear every annoying giggle of the people in the rooms next door. Note: there are no lifts so you have to carry your bags up stairs to get in and then again up the stairs. Because the hostel was so quiet we had a chance to check out the other rooms and the dorms and they looked extremely clean and there was a large locker at the end of each bunk. The bathrooms were clean and showers also although there was a fair amount of water on the floor daily from people not knowing where to put a shower curtain during their shower.

The hostel faces a park with tennis courts and goals for a few sports and backs a baseball field. The beach has volleyballl courts set up. You can get equipment at the front desk. Also has bike rental and storage. At the club on the beach there is kayak rentals which was about $40 for a double for 2 hours i think.
We saw a sign on one of the paths about coyotes and what to do if you see one. Theyre not joking. We saw one on the way home on night just on the corner about 50m from the door. Didnt really care much that we were there. Just kind of had a look at us then ran into the bush.

About a 30min walk or a 10min bus ride down 4th there is a movie theatre that shows double features. There was info in the hostel opposite check in desk. Tickets were $7 for 2 movies. This place was on teh corner of balaclava and Broadway. 2 blocks from 4th. I think its the number 5 bus that down down 4th. Get of at balaclava.

i would stay here again if i didnt want to stay in the heart of the city.

This is a wonderful hostel if you don't mind being a bit out of town. It is large and spacious, and while I was a bit skeptical at having so many people in one "room" it turned out to be cubicle style with only four beds (2 bunks) in view of each other. There is a large locker per bunk, and storage facilities for larger items with reception. A pretty decent cafe offered breakfast and dinner every day. Huge kitchen, lots of lockers for food. Several computer workstations around, plus free wireless in the cafe. Large laundry room with tub, iron, etc. Several little spaces scattered around with couches or armchairs to hang out in, and lots of pay-phones.
Nice, relaxed, friendly atmosphere.
It's an old building but it's pretty well-maintained, and I found everything clean. Staff were friendly and helpful.
The beach is just a few minutes walk away. Note that there really isn't much in Jericho Beach itself other than the hostel - just a yacht club and a hot-dog place for other food options! It's about 20 mins walk to the nearest set of shops (including cafes), and about 30 mins by bus to downtown.
Lots of green fields and trees as well as the beach if you want to relax - a great place to just hang out. I stayed here only because all the hostels in town were full, but was very happy in the end. The only downsides are the distance from town, and the fact that it's no cheaper than the city hostels.
But overall I very highly recommend it.
