West End Guest House

If you like staying at B&B's you are going to enjoy this one. The location is central to all Vancouver activities. Your a block away from all the restaurants and shops. The places is like coming home, they have thought of everything and cater to your every need. Checking in you will normally meet Evan, owner of the B&B and he will give you the grand tour. He is extremely knowledgeable about history of the home and the Vancouver area and a great conversationalist. On arrival they provide cookies, drinks, coffee and tea. Sherry is served at in the late afternoon. There is always lots on candy around for those with a sweet tooth. The home is meticulously clean, the bedrooms are good size and have all the amenities of a five star hotel, in fact better. The beds are very comfortable and will provide you restful nights sleep. The breakfast will be a special highlight of the stay. It is a visual and palate pleasing adventure. You would think you were dining with royalty. They served eggs benedict when we were there, oh so good ! I would go back in a minute.

Room Tip: Stayed on second floor back room very quite

The West End Guest House is a gem and an oasis located in the middle of the West End of Vancouver, which is one of the most highly densified living areas in North America with apartment towers packed into the area. The West End of Vancouver is vibrant with upscale and unique stores, as well as having a myriad of restaurants styles to cater to any palette. And capping off this location the ocean which just sets this area off as a must visit place.

In the middle of all this is the West End Guest House, one of the few remaining period houses in the area and it is a gem. I loved the colour of the house a vibrant pink, which i realise may not be to everyone's taste, but don't judge a house by its colour, inside the interior design of the house evokes the period of its origin, early 20th century. it is sympathetically decorated with antiques and furnishings but is not cloying. There is a sumptuousness to the interior but also an openness, you can move around the space without thinking you are going to break anything, a real plus for the inquisitive guest. The family who built the house was one of the first families of Vancouver photography, and they owned and operated one of the first photography businesses in the city. This fact is reflected in the many framed original photographs throughout the house. It is a fascinating opportunity to spend some time looking into the Vancouver that was and some of the people who populated the city at the time.

The owner, Evan, has really set out to make the house welcoming. On the main floor is the front parlor, looking onto the street, the dining area and a guest kitchen behind the dinning area, where guests can refuel or refresh themselves with coffee, tea, juice, pop, fruit and such, a lovely touch I have not encountered before. In the evening Evan puts out sherry for the guests and small nibbles. Throughout there are small candy dishes with candies for the guest's enjoyment. A computer is conveniently locted in the parlor to hlep facilitate guests' stay in Vancouver.

Included in the stay is breakfast, and you do not want to miss this. The breakfast tends to be a fixed menu, but can be tweaked for individual requirements. it is not your run of the mill fare either. While we were there we hand made sausage, crab cakes, perfect eggs to name just a few of the items during the course of our stay, and great coffee to die for. The breakfast table setting was also a feast for the eyes, which just added another layer of pleasure to the WEst End Guest House experience.

The bedrooms are on the second and third floors of the house and they echo the same decorating focus, period pieces. The rooms were lush, comfortable and welcoming, avoiding the anticeptic luxury feel of some other places I have stayed at.

There is also a patio off the second floor in the back and it was lovely to sit out there in the in the morning or late afternoon. Adding to this relaxing location was Evan's cat who frequented the patio, but if you are allergic to cats or are an ailurophobe, don't despair, the cat has no interest in going into the guest house, so cat lovers can enjoy the company of a cat without comprimising the other guests stay.

In addition to the guest house's experience is it's location. The house is within easy walking distance of the vibrant West End of Vancouver as well as central Vancouver. And yet once in the guest house, it is an oasis of calm and restfulness from the busyness and exhaustion that can accompany the guest's adventures or business during the day.

We had a wonder 3 night stay at the West End Guest House. My partner and I stayed in room 6 (overlooks the front entrance) which has a foam mattress. This was our first time sleeping on one and must say that we were pleasantly surprised. The neighborhood street is relatively quiet with the passing of a car or two. We were able to sleep with the window open. The morning breakfast was fantastic!! Evan, Ron and their help made us feel comfortable from the moment we stepped into the house. It is very clean which is a sign of excellent innkeepers and a high quality stay. When it came for our good-bye, we know our first stay isn’t our last. Thank You Guys!!!

We chose the West End Guest House from reading Trip Advisor and it lived up to the reviews. We had a queen-size room facing the front of the house, with a beautifully appointed bathroom. Evan and his helpers made us very welcome and we loved staying in this amazing period house. Lovely extra touches such as cake, tea & coffee in the pantry, books and magazines. Evan even lent us two bikes to explore the nearby Stanley Park. Breakfast was a civilized affair at the beautifully set dining room table with home baked goodies. A great place! Would love to come back.

We selected the West End Guest House to stay in Vancouver for our 40th Wedding Anniversary.
The welcome and services we received made it worth the trip alone. Extremely well run and cultured environment from top to bottom. Even the other guests, lots of whom were repeat customers, were a welcome addition to the experience. Evan was miles beyond the extra mile of consideration and assistance.

Room Tip: Reserve a spot early. You will not be able to book a better value in all of BC for location, superb...

We booked West End because of its location and mainly due to the mass of excellent reviews. We were not disappointed. From the minute we arrived we felt at home. Immaculate decor, comfortable bed, spotless bathroom and delicious breakfasts. And, thank you for looking after our excess baggage while we flew to Vancouver Island. Nothing was too much trouble.

As I travel more and more to B&B's I do find its the little touches that now provide the 5star service.... In this case it wasnt the room, abundance of home cooked high fat sugar scrumptious home cooked delights it was the Free sherry and free soda for the hangover,,,,, this is a great B&B with good sized rooms and great breakfasts, knowledgeable homely hosts and friendly ..... It's number one for a reason,,,,, 400 plus people don't lie... Go and check in :). Breakfasts are a blast Depending on who is also checked in......
