Hostel was good, nice location, clean etc. However with ANY HI reservation on booking.com be aware the prices are based on you having a HI card which gives you 25% off - therefore without this card (which costs $25 each) the price you are given on booking.com is NOT the price you will pay - you will need to add on another 25%. This is likely to be the HI giving booking.com their incorrect prices? Once your there im not sure how it would work if you wanted to cancel as booking.com are covered by their comment 'prices are subject to change', not to mention how annoying it is when you have a long journey and once reached your destination you either have to fund another 25% on to what you've budgeted OR turn around and try and locate somewhere else.
All in all a good hostel but a tad tricky on their pricing me thinks!!

The good: Friendly and fairly knowledgeable staff. Clean. Comfy beds. Safe, quiet street that is walking distance to many destinations including Stanley Park, Gastown, Canada Place (where you can catch free shuttles to Capilano Suspension Bridge or Grouse Mountain) and more. Has payphones, kitchen w/ complimentary breakfast (bagels, toast), and both male and female bathrooms with 3 toilets and 3 showers on each floor, which more than accommodates the guests. One block from bus stop which takes you to the train station which takes you directly to airport.

The bad: When I went, it was July. It was SO HOT. The lobby was hot because the kitchen is behind it. The kitchen was sweltering. I could not stand to go in for more than a couple of minutes. The rooms were so hot it was impossible to sleep, and the single desk fan was not enough to cool it off. Also, the rooms are comparatively small to other HI hostels I've stayed at.

I think this place may be better in spring / fall, than in mid-summer.

Room Tip: I'm not sure there are good rooms, but I wished we'd booked earlier. The hostel was fully bo...

When I come to Vancouver for concerts I usually stay at this hostel. It is well located but not in the busy area of downtown Vancouver so its pretty quiet. The staff was helpful and I will stay here again.

I've stayed at the HI-Downtown several times and it's always been a pleasant experience. Its location is perfect: close to everything, but in a quieter area compared to other hostels. Staff is friendly, efficient, & nice. Place is always clean. Beds in dorms are comfortable (though mattresses are a bit hard). Rooms are a decent size, but they get a bit stuffy in summer (there's usually a fan available in the room). Free breakfast offers a great selection and there's usually some left at the end. The one more negative thing, from my personal experience, is that WiFi can be spotty at times.

If you are in Vancouver and want to be in a great location, stay here. You couldn’t get a better hostel. It is outstanding.

I stayed here for just under one month. The team were all excellent. Nothing was ever too much trouble. Their local knowledge was helpful and valuable, and they went above and beyond my expectations of them to help make my stay as good as it was.

Having the 24-hour reception was very useful. Security here was great and if you had any problem like losing your room key card in the early hours of the morning there was always someone around to issue you a new card.

If you are a cyclist and have a bike to store, staff were happy to lock this up and get this out for me at any time without complaint. At HI Downtown you can store your bike securely indoors and they have lots of lockers for this. Additionally I believe you can rent bikes from them if you wish.

I stayed in a private room. I have no complaints at all about this very spacious, bright, quiet room, which had its own sink, extensive storage in the form of a desk-cum-chest-of-drawers and open wardrobe area. When I requested a few extra hangers they were happy to oblige. They even provided some basic essentials like shampoo/shower gel/soap/and some fruit for free, which was ready in the room when I arrived. You also get your towels and linen there for free. There is on-site laundry ($2 wash, $2 dry), which worked well, and you can buy laundry powder and any other essentials at a decent rate form the hostel reception. Rooms are cleaned daily and I never once noticed anything to be dirty in the whole hostel. The kitchen is thoroughly cleaned multiple times, each day by a friendly team. There are facilities to label and store your food in a communal fridge, and to lock up other food in lockers in the kitchen.

The hostel has a sociable, but not excessively noisy atmosphere. My impression is that this one is calmer than HI Central on Granville. It was very easy to sit in the communal areas and get to know others, and you didn’t have to worry about being woken up at night. There’s a library, a games room with a pool table and some arcade games, a large TV room (where they put films on and provide snacks for guests every Sunday night 8.30PM) and great outdoors areas including a rooftop patio. The activities put on by the hostel were great and ranged from yoga to discounted tours of popular local attractions.

I have stayed in many hostels before and have never had such an excellent, let alone free breakfast provided. There is even 24/7 tea and coffee.

The range of facilities, smooth running of the place, and its fantastic location are huge plus points. It was better than a lot of 2 and 3 star hotels I’ve stayed in.

Overall I will not hesitate to recommend this hostel. Word amongst the backpackers is that it’s the best anyway and I will certainly add my support to this.

We stayed in this hostel for 1 week and found it hard to fault the place! The staff are friendly and enforce the regulations well which was comforting to see, security reasons etc. We stayed in a four bed dorm which was clean and It had a sink which was handy. The rooms get quite hot and stuffy though so I would advise to have the air conditioning on at all times.

The kitchen was fine, we where aware of the lack of cooking facilities and prepped food accordingly such as salads etc. this really wasn't a problem as the kitchen was thus quieter. The staff where friendly and helpful too. The location for this hostel is ideal, smack in the middle of downtown!

The only negative point was the breakfasts - the quality of the breads/muffins/bagels was a little poor. But they are included so cannot be too fussy.

A massive bonus was the free milk that was on offer at all times. This was very handy for tea and coffee throughout the day!

Another great HI stay!!!

Room Tip: The top floors can get hot and stuffy, so choose a room on level 2 or 3

I'll be staying here again this month when I'm in town for business and a concert. Clean, friendly and affordable. An oasis of peace and quiet only steps from Granville and within walking distance of the Skytrain and the downtown club/theater scene.

Room Tip: Request a lower bunk.
