“Enjoyed my stay here”
Reviewed July 10, 2013 via mobile

I had a great stay at this hostel. To be fair i wasnt really looking to 'mingle' with others all that much as i was travelling with a friend but at one of the burger nights on the rooftop i met heaps of lovely people who were up for a chat.

The free breakfast was the same as all HI's, bagels, toast, juice etc.
the best bit of this hostel is the location. Maybe vancouver is a safe place in general, but this was great. My friend and i (two young girls) walked home at night in the dark and didnt feel uneasy once. Infact, people we passed actually said hello! This location is close to english bay beach and davie street. Davie street is awesome and has heaps of bars and restaurants and interesting characters. We also walked about 30 mins to granville island which was great, and maybe about 30 mins to canada square for the fireworks on canada day.

The rooms here are nothing flash, but that doesnt bother me. They were clean and close to the bathrooms which werent super clean, but perfectly acceptable.

Staff were happy to help and good for a chat.
I would love to stay here again.

I wont pretend that i am used to staying in hostels around the world but out of the 3 i have stayed in around the world, this blows them all out of the water.

They offer private rooms which is great, very good breakfast, muffins, bagels, toast, fruit and cereal and free coffee!

The décor is very dated as i don't think its been renovated since it used to be a hotel. The one thing that really got to me was the odd smell as soon as we came out of our room, the odour wasn't there in the room however.

Overall good experience and definitely recommend this to people visiting Downtown!

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor, all private rooms are on the same floor.

The most positive thing about this hostel is definitely the breakfast. This was really great! The locations is OK, but the rest of the facilities are somewhat poor. Not a lot of activities going on at the hostel, dorms are really small for for four people and there aren't many bathrooms. In fact, when I stayed there, the one on our floor was broken so two floors had to share one shower.. The area is safe though, I'm a female travelling alone and I could safely walk around at night.

Friendly staff, quiet for sleeping, bike rental available including lock and helmet for $30. Buy a toothbrush, playing cards etc, free storage locker for your own bike, big clean kitchen for you own food storage and cooking! Great value! Plus a rooftop deck!

This is one of the best hostels I've ever stayed at and it even beats out the Hi-Y Hostel in Santa Monica, Los Angeles on price, travelers, and complimentary breakfast! Pluses are the delicious complimentary breakfast especially the locally baked muffins and rolls. They are very, very good. The location is great; from here you can walk to English Bay (north), Yaletown and the waterfront (South), to downtown proper along Burrard or Granville or any other E-W streets in just a matter of minutes. Davie Village is a great place for shopping, eating and people watching and very safe even at 4 a.m. in the morning. The dorm rooms and washrooms are clean and newly remodeled (especially the bathrooms). I was in a dorm room of only four bunks. The only minus on that front is the tiny windows and the air gets close and stuffy but there was an electric fan thoughtfully placed in the room. The kitchen is very well laid out and conducive to cooking for many people and it's self-service with cleaning up. This time, no one stole my food out of the community fridge. Finally, the quality of the travelers is the best I've ever run into even compared to Los Angeles. I have to say the staff here are young, helpful and cheerful. The only downside I found on this trip and last year's was that the fourth floor seems to be where the groups of young or school-age kids are situated and they can be quite noisy past "lights out". Even with ear plugs, I couldn't shut out the noise of banging doors and people running up and down the halls shouting and talking and I am an experienced hosteler. A word to management. Otherwise, this is the place to say on a budget ($30 a night for Hi-Y members) and only $35 for non-members. I have been staying here for years and many more hopefully in future.

Room Tip: Ask for a dorm room near the washroom if you like that kind of convenience. There is a lift or you c...

Private room with no wifi,no TV,shared bathroom, frustratingly uncomfortable mattress with sharp springs sticking out(we were so tired the next day),toenails littered over the carpet and a prison-esque bright light in a hostel that feels and looks like it used to be an aged care facility all for the bargain price of $95.70 a night. It only takes a quick scan of the Internet to find out how ridiculous that is. We did not pre-book at this place so did not know the prices until we were charged and felt so gutted and ripped off when we saw the room.Staff unhelpful, unfriendly and sometimes rude.Good kitchen and location but still incredibly average for the price overall. It should be noted that I have not felt compelled to leave a single bad review in 5 months of travel.I have never felt so short changed.

One block from Davie Street in one direction and within easy reach of Granville Island, buses, trains and the whole city area this hostel is convenient, safe and comfortable.
I have stayed here alone on a couple of occasions and found it covered my needs for a clean warm bed, laundry, decent breakfast and a good kitchen.
On the downside the wifi can be iffy and almost universally the reception staff are uninterested and not particularly friendly which makes the hostel seem cold and clinical. It seems whenever a receptionist is required to leave whatever they are doing in the back room and attend to the desk they're put out. I have found this to be the case with various different employees on several different occasions so unfortunately this seems to be the norm. Luckily, travellers being what they generally are, it is easy to interact with other guests especially in the dining room.
Staff attitude notwithstanding, I would stay here again, although if I were travelling with friends a shared hotel room would be cheaper.
