“The best hotel on Robson”
Reviewed August 6, 2011

Very efficient in checking in and out, the room is not large but clean with a balcony which opens for great views of the city.
Parking is available with the hotel for a cost. The hotel is easy walking to shopping and dining.

I’ve stayed here more than a hundred times since my first visit twenty years ago. Deciding on a star rating is difficult, because while it’s not the most luxurious hotel in Vancouver, it does give good value for your dollar. Also, check their website for package offerings.

Every room has a private balcony with sliding glass doors (too small to be usable, but still a nice feature).

There are three types of rooms and they vary widely in size. Those with a double bed are quite small. Those with two smallish beds (“twins” on their website) are nicely sized and have windows facing in two directions. Those with two double beds (“deluxe” on their website, 360 sq ft) are huge. However, the “deluxe” rooms all seem to connect to an adjoining deluxe room, and because connecting doors frequently transmit noise, I would avoid those. Apart from the “deluxe” rooms, none of the rooms have connecting doors. All rooms have fridges.

The “Executive guest rooms” are more expensive, and occupy the highest floors. They’re the same size as rooms on lower floors, and probably not worth the extra cost. In any case, nearly every room has a superb view, because the building is a tall, spindly structure of 42 stories on a hillside, spaced apart from other high-rises.

The hotel does not provide some of the services you’d expect in a luxury hotel. There’s no bellstaff, no room service, and no valet parking (self-parking in their garage is available). Tour groups from Asia and Europe appear to be this hotel’s bread and butter. The hotel was built in 1973 and shows its age mainly in the bathrooms, as is true of older buildings. Some of the tub-surrounds have been entirely replaced and others haven’t.

On the positive side, the location is perfect, right where the business district morphs into a neighbourhood consisting of upscale condos and apartments. The heart of downtown is a 20-25 minute walk along a pleasant, busy commercial street (Robson Street). Restaurants and shops are everywhere. My experiences with the staff over twenty years have almost always been positive.

Room Tip: Nearly all rooms regardless of direction have good views. Rooms ending in 01 (deluxe), 02 (one bed...

It was bad from the start of coming into the hotel. The paint on the walls at the front desk was peeling off and the check in agent seemed rushed since she was the only one on staff. The room was in such a derelict and decrepit condition. The room was dirty. Every thing from decor to the furniture was from the 70s 1970's. A/C and Heat did not work. Internet was slow and a charge of $9.00 was added to my bill. Told the front desk of my problems and was told by management no refunds are given. Wanted to talk to the GM and the front desk manager refused to give a phone number or put me through his voice mail. I found out this hotel is neither star or diamond rated and owned by some Hong Kong based operations. I assume the owners know about these problems and condition of the hotel but are driven by the collection of money. I asked the front desk if any investment/renovations have been made to the hotel. They told me never since it was sold to the Hong Kong company for 11 years now. It's sad to see this hotel go to waste I remember when this hotel was an icon in vancouver. The restaurant food and service was just absolutely atrocious.

The staff were wonderful. I travel to Canada (Ontario) often and the area is Canadian, but much like West Coast US.

I did not like the room... it was OLD and there was a slight bit of mold in the shower. This I would expect in a tropical climate, not northern.

Would I repeat this stay? NO.

We were flying over to BC to family and as Canadian Affair drop off in Vancouver we decided to stay there for a few nights. Different reviews were noted on tripadvisor, but choose this one, and it was superb. Very clean, we were warned about bed bugs to the point I brought bug spray - waste of suitcase space - spotless. Views perfect and situation the best for visiting everywhere in Vancouver. Would definately go again for a stop over.

We flew from NYC and on the very first night at the Empire Landmark in Vancouver, there was no heat and we were cold. We called the front desk multiple times and were told that all of their rooms were booked but that they would assign a new room after check out the following day. The new room was average and upon checkout I asked for some type of compensation for the first night being so uncomfortable (the room was so cold that my traveling partner could not sleep). We were told that the hotel would not offer refunds and that we would have to go through our booking agent (one of the web travel companies). When I called the booking agent, I was told that it was the hotel's responsibility to handle refunds. The hotel had no integrity and after multiple attempts by the booking agent and just as many denials by the Empire Landmark, no further efforts were made to rectify the situation and I was told that there was no chance of a refund (again, for the night that we couldn't sleep because we had no heat). This hotel is not run by people of high character (although some of the people who worked there were nice). Fortunately, we were protected from this sort of thing through our CC. Beware of this hotel, the Empire Landmark in Vancouver (the name even sounds as if it could be bad news or worse). Needless to say, I would not recommend this hotel. I hope that this review helps.

I've seen the negative reviews from other hotel guests, but we didn't find that to be the case. Yeah, the ice machine is on the 22nd floor but,......We reserved the room with the help of the airport guest rep and took the train downtown. We walked the ten or so blocks to the hotel. A clean, well equipped room on the 30th floor was ready when we arrived. We asked to be moved to the other side of the hotel to take advantage of the harbor view and the staff accommodated us without issue. The room was exactly as the photos on Trip Advisor have shown and was very comfortable. The staff provided us with information about two local large supermarkets within walking distance as well as directions to ChinaTown by bus the next day and were all quite professional. The area is popular at night with locals and has many clubs and restaurants to choose from. There is a large Asian population in Vancouver and we found many markets and eateries that catered to that style of cuisine. You can find Italian, McDonalds or pretty much anything else you're looking for though. The bus stop is right outside the hotel entrance and a small residential neighborhood behind the hotel was excellent for walking in the early evening. Proximity to the park and the harbor made it a great trip for us. If you have an early flight out, plan on taking a cab back to the airport..fare is about thirty dollars. The hotel will help you arrange it. We would stay there again.

Room Tip: Always ask to look at a room before you check in. It's always worked well for us.
