“Great value and location”
Reviewed July 19, 2007

Had 4 nights here. Was in a tree lined street. Minutes from Stanley Park, Denman Street which has restaurants galore, and either short walk to Downtown or bus to Downtown. We had a shared bathroom room but never had to wait. The lounge was a great place to have a coffee and read the paper. and other guests There was also a laundry for guests. Would definitely return.

The hotel came recommended by Lonely Planet and for the one night we stayed it was fine. The room was clean and there was a decent shower but the decor is very dated and there were numerous items which needed fixing (windows, coat-hooks etc). In short, it's OK for the price and a short stay but we'd have been a little uncomfortable if we'd had to stay any longer than one night.

The hotel is nestled on the west end of Robson St, in a beautiful neighbourhood just blocks away from Stanley Park. The hotel could use some updating but it is quite obvious that it was quite grand in its day, 1926. Guests have a choice of shared bath with three other guests for $70 or a private bath for $90 both prices are at least $50 less than any other hotels in the city. I stayed with a shared bath and never had to wait to use the shower or water closet. If you plan to use the room as a place to sleep at night you can't go wrong, it's a quiet neighbourhood where a single woman traveller like myself will feel comfortable at all times of the day. Blocks away from great restaurants and public transportation. I definately recommend this hotel.

Keeping in mind that this is a budget hotel it is excellent. The staff are extremely hospitable and friendly and will put themselves out for your comfort. I have stayed there a total of 6 times and plan two more visits this year. It is ideal if you are moving on up country.
The great thing is that it is so close to Stanley Park and the Lost Lagoon and it is so cool, after a hard year's work to get up early, collect a coffee and miffin from Bojangles (a block away) and sit in the warm morning light overlooking the Lost Lagoon and the creatures around it. A perfect antedote.
I have stayed at other hotels but nothing compares to the Buchan. I don't want to spend a fortune on a hotel - I go to Canada for the tranquility and kindness of the people. I find that the large hotels are so undistinctive that you could be anywhere and after an 11 hour flight I want to know I'm yards away from Stanley Park And in a district so laid back as to be almost horizontal.

We booked into the Buchan partly because of the reviews we'd read on Tripadvisor, partly because of the price and partly because of the location. When we first arrived we were quite frankly disappointed. The hotel is dated and tatty. I appreciate that it is a budget hotel but do not feel that this excuses the owners from keeping it in a basic state of repair. We could not lock our windows, the sink moved and a porcelain tap that had been stuck back together with glue promptly collapsed in my partners hand when he turned on the hot water! We felt that a simple coat of paint would have made this hotel feel so much better, and that the furniture could do with upgrading.

To be fair the location is good, the staff were helpful and the rooms were cleaned everyday – buts it’s hard to make a room look nice and comfortable when the decor is shabby.

As many of the other reviewers have written, the Buchan is a budget hotel - so it is cheap.

We booked a Double-Occupancy room for the Labor Day weekend.

Our room had 1 queen bed and 1 twin bed. There was a small closet, desk/chair and a tiny (14") TV. The bathroom seemed like an afterthought - it was tiny! But it was also clean, with good hot/cold water flow. Clean towels, which were replaced every day. There's cable also.

On the downside:
1. The room and furniture looked worn. The building itself is quite old and it shows - for example, our bathroom door would not shut properly.
2. Most of the rooms in the hotel have a shared bath in the hallway. So you'll occasionally see disheveled (and half-naked!) people standing in the corridors waiting for a bathroom to get free.
3. The hotel does not have parking. Overnight street parking is not easy, but not impossible. Over Labor day weekend, we spent an average of 10 minutes every night looking for a spot.

On the upside:
1. The hotel is very quiet
2. They have a nice bar/restaurant in the basement
3. Very close to Stanley Park, Denman Street. Walking distance from English Beach

The Buchan attracts a special kind of traveller - the type who doesnt care much for comforts, and is quite social - there's a common sitting room in the lobby where we found fellow residents every evening to have a chat with. We saw that the clientele was mostly non-US. Some people were travelling with children too.

You would never confuse the Buchan for a Marriott, let alone a Westin or Omni. But we really enjoyed our stay there.

  • Liked — Cheap and clean
  • Disliked — A bit worn out
  • Tips/Secrets — Book the executive room - its worth the additional space that is available inside the rooms

The hotel is in a leafy residential neighborhood that's a short walk from the lively English Bay Beach area, and all the restaurants and shop along Denman Street. The exterior of the building is quite nice, and the interior hallways are very nice, including hardwood floors. It's also quite near Stanley Park. I thought the location was excellent. However, it is a bit of a hassle to get to the heart of downtown and Gastown -- it's a bit too far to walk, so you'll have to rely on public transport or taxis. Staff is very friendly and helpful in getting around town.

Let's make it clear -- this is a budget hotel. The rooms are pretty spartan, and the carpet and some of the amenities are a little bit worn. Also, there's no air conditioning, which can make things quite warm during hot stretches. (Which, are uncommon along the B.C. coast, it should be noted.) Rooms were pretty clean, though, and the hotel had a nice sitting room and storage for bags and bikes.

It's not the Hilton, but it also doesn't have the prices of the Hilton.
