Owner description: VanDusen Botanical Garden is a 55-acre oasis in the heart of Vancouver with over 7,500 plant species and varieties from around the world! Spot and photograph local wildlife, find your way through an Elizabethan hedge maze, unwind in a serene setting, dine on the patios of Truffles Cafe or Shaughnessy Restaurant, or browse the garden-themed gift shop. VanDusen has something for everyone to enjoy! The Garden's multi-award winning LEED Platinum Visitor Centre was named Most Sustainable Building of the Year in 2014. Shaped like an orchid when viewed from above, its organic lines echo the way nature and conservation have been considered at every turn.

This is easy to get to yourself by bus so you don’t need to pay to go on a tour (I don't recommend the Sky Train, as we used, because it leaves you with about a mile to walk). The gardens are beautiful, with so many different areas to explore. Well worth a visit.

We lucked out and got a 1 hour tour, so it helped us see some highlights and learn the history of the garden. (it was a golf course before becoming a garden 40+ years ago). Well laid out and lots of labels for those who need to keep learning what everything is. Worth a visit!

Van Dusen's garden takes a very different approach and focus than what's found at Butchart's. No crowds, no contrived, tight, boldly coloured plantings, with a focus on extraordinary trees and their undergrowth. If Butchart's is the Disney World of gardens, Van Dusen's is every bit as beautiful and well tended but more relaxed and precious. Walk over bridges where ducks swim among the water lilies and turtles sun themselves on rocks. I'm an avid gardener from Ontario in a very different planting zone struggling with a large, country garden. I can't wait to research the tree names I noted to see if any could be coaxed to grow here. There's a nice lunch place on site called Shaughnessy when you need some refreshment though accessing it from the garden proved a challenge. One must walk back through the parking lot to reach its door. There's some outdoor seating as well.

Spent a very enjoyable afternoon at VanDusen. I could of spent a few days exploring all the nooks and crannies. Very well maintained gardens. Impressive. Pretty thorough botanic labeling of plant specimens was really appreciated. Only area seemingly lacking in care was the medicine wheel and medicinal plants areas. Gorgeous ponds with resident (?) heron appropriately named heron pond (because the pond is shaped like a heron or because it attracts herons??). Very pleasant and would definitely return for many more hours. I have visited many gardens in England, Canada and U.S., and this one definitely ranks up there. Dare I say I enjoyed it more than Butchart....

Enjoyed the Gardens. The maze was fun for young and old alike. The restaurant food was good and the view from the terrace is lovely.
