“Poor room quality”
Reviewed July 17, 2013

We enjoyed the hotel's location in the heart of downtown Vancouver, and got a good rate at the Century Plaza so I was optimistic (while not expecting a 5 star hotel). It was a quick walk to the boats to Granville Island and a nice 15 minute walk to Canada Place. Check in/check out was easy with no problems. The staff was very friendly and the lobby is cheerful, modern and clean. Unfortunately, once we got to the room, the positives ended.

The slow, tiny elevator took us to a dark hallway and tired, outdated room. The decor was ... non-existent. We got the 1-bedroom suite with a kitchenette and the bedroom bed was fairly comfortable but the pull-out sofa should not rightly be considered a bed--lumpy, dirty, saggy, disgusting piece of furniture. The linen quality was poor. The windows provided no insulation whatsoever. Our room on Burrard was so noisy that I kept thinking the windows were open when they weren't. Note that the hotel is next to a hospital, so the siren noise runs all through the night. Thank goodness for the "sleep machine" app. The bathroom was serviceable but the shower jumped from scalding hot to ice cold and never settled on a temperature. Housekeeping didn't wash the dishes in the kitchenette, which we thought was odd. I also had a terrible experience on the phone when I tried to confirm my reservation the week before.

Again, everyone (aside from the phone) that we encountered was very friendly so I feel bad rating this property so poorly. But the room was just plain awful. Now I know why we got the good rate. Not recommended.

Room Tip: Burrard Street is really noisy and on Comox is the hospital (and sirens). You might try a room in th...

When you book this hotel, the doorman greets you with a smile, the foyer is lively and chic, then something bizarre happens, you take the elevator to your room and you are transported to what I can only describe as a horrible little storage facility. I've been to the hotel before, so I was in shock when I opened the door to Rm 1601. I felt like I was sleeping in my old aunt's abandoned sewing room. Stale smells, soiled sofa, one sad little picture hung on the wall. And all I kept thinking was, "We paid almost $200 Canadian for this!" The list of horrors was endless: horrible squeaking beds, lumpy little pillows, rusty tub, dull taupe walls, TV bracketed to the wall. I could hear hair dryers, toilets, showers, phones, it was truly unbelievable. I think it was the room stuck in the 80s. Looking out the window that I couldn't open and all I could see were the other hotels we could have stayed at for about the same price. When we left (early), the staff didn't even ask us how our stay was, and part of me suspects it's because they know which room they gave us. The front of the hotel is like a mirage, complete with spa, cafe and comedy - well what a joke. If you want any semblance of luxury, stay in the lobby. As I write this I realize fully we should have complained and asked for another room, but the sheer audacity of knowingly charging us almost $200 for such a room well, truly, the shame is on you Century Plaza.

Room Tip: Stay away from the 16th floor.

Stayed for 3 nights pre-cruise. The location is excellent. Walking distance to a supermarket so it's easy for us to stock up on water. Also, walking distance to Robson Street which houses Roots, Canada, easy access to Granville Island and Stanley Park...etc. The room is old. However, it is of reasonable cleanliness. Reception staff and bellboy are friendly. We only paid 129 USD per night for the executive king suite (June 14-17). Booking early is crucial in order to lock in the best deal. FYI. We booked 6 months in advance.

Room Tip: Get a room on the higher floor to minimise noise(especially siren)

We have been at this hotel several times and always find the staff very friendly, rooms are well appointed, clean, good Internet connection, dining is excellent and the hotel is well placed for walking around the City.

Room Tip: Get a room which overlooks the harbour as these are quieter.

Stayed for 3 nights at the end of our Canadian tour and were lucky enough to be upgraded to the penthouse suite which was fabulous. The views were incredible of Vancouver at night at it was literally a suite with lounge area with sofas and huge TV, business area (incuding fax machine) king size bed, jacuzzi style bath and walk in shower with 2 shower heads. There was a smal kitchen area incuding a fridge, coffee machine and toaster but alas no kettle for a cup of tea.

The location is very good as most buses/coaches for tours stop outside and it is a good walk down towards Canada House to catch the free buses to Grouse mountain and the Capillano Suspension bridge or the bus to Stanley Park. Also very good for shopping and eateriers. On the downside it is on a main road and the hospital is quite close, so during the night it can be noisy with sirens.

Wi-fi throughout although it is $5 per hour to use a general computer which seemed petty in comparison to the price of rooms but the receptionists were more than helpful when it came to printing off boarding passes etc.

Vancouver is a lovely City and we enjoyed our stay at the Century Plaza.

Room Tip: If its a special occasion and you can afford it, I can recommend one of the penthouses.

We arrived in Vancouver one day before our cruise departed. Booked the hotel along with Amtrak tickets from Seattle. Hotel was just a $10 cab ride from the train station, and the same the next morning to Canada Place.
The room was huge. Very nice bathroom, kitchen that we didn't use, and comfortable bed. We appreciated having a laundry room since we had been traveling for awhile.
Location is very good as we were able to walk to Canada Place and Gas Town.
Furnishings were a little bit tired thus the 4 stars.

4 night stay in late June. Large twin queen room, with generous sitting area and kitchenette. Everything OK, except settee which was distinctly tired and threadbare, however, bed linens and towels were fine.

Location is central, 10 minute walk to main shopping district, and very easy public transport system, bus stops right outside the hotel.

Noise is acceptable by city standards, major hospital next door, you may hear sirens! Views across city from upper floors on north facing (non-hospital) side are spectacular.

Did not use restaurant, but there is a $5 dollar a day voucher for not having fresh linen which will contribute towards breakfast in the coffee shop.

Good food store 1 block down, and plenty of bars along Robson St 3 blocks away.

As to value, I am not going to quote a figure that we paid, but we always travel independently, check all website prices, then invest in a direct phone call and negotiate, you will usually do well, sometimes very well, and don't forget to ask for "seniors rate" in Canada if you qualify , usually 15/20% off standard.

Room Tip: Get high, and away from the hospital frontage, ask, and be pushy!!
