“Great location, great hotel!”
Reviewed May 25, 2007

We stayed here after our cruise. The location is great, we walked from Canada Place (about 10 minutes and easy.) The room we had was spacious, quiet and the bed was very comfortable. We enjoyed walking along the water, over to Robson St., and through the park and nearby neighborhoods. We took a taxi to the airport and the taxi driver was so very nice and polite and informative about the area. There's a lot of construction going on all over Vancouver but it doesn't detract from a wonderful experience.

I stayed at this Marriott for two nights in early May before a cruise to Alaska. It is an above-average, super clean Marriott hotel with VERY comfy beds. The hotel staff were overwhelmingly friendly and helpful with a luggage problem I encountered with the airline, and the concierge was very efficient and knowledgeable about the area.
The location of the hotel is very convenient for exploring Vancouver on foot. It is literally two minutes from the harborside of Vancouver, about a 5-10 minute walk from Robson Street with its shopping and dining, and approximately 10-15 minutes from Stanley Park on foot. It is also a few blocks from the main cruise terminal, but about a 10-minute taxi ride from the Ballantyne pier (where our ship left from).
If you like to spend a lot of time in the hotel, I agree with previous reviewers that the lobby is kind of small and not very interesting. For us, it was exactly what we expected and hoped for, a very comfortable and convenient home base for exploring Vancouver.
If you go to Granville Island, go to the public market hungry! There's lots of good stuff to eat from the different vendors.
Just as a tip, avoid East Vancouver past Gastown. We drove through there on our way to the Ballantyne Pier, and it was a VERY seedy place that I would not want to wind up wandering into on foot by accident.

We stayed for two days at the Marriott Pinnacle Vancouver after a cruise. We chose the hotel for its location and past reviews. It turned out to be a great choice. The location was excellent, allowing us to walk to most destinations such as Robson Street, Gastown, Chinatown and the waterfront. The room was somewhat a strange shape, but the bed was very comfortable, it was very clean, and had a wonderful view. The bathroom was large and had a great shower. The staff at the hotel was very helpful with directions, suggestions and in making transportation arraignments. On our last day, the Vancouver Marathon ran right in front of the hotel, and the staff arraigned to have a taxi pick us up at the corner.

I booked a room at the last minute through Priceline, a little getaway for the long weekend. When I arrived at the hotel, I was told that only rooms with Queen beds were available. I was shocked when I got to the room: The place was tiny! [It was later explained to me that rooms on the fifth and sixth floors are smaller than average.] I tried to order room service, but the menu had been omitted from the service directory. I tried to watch a movie, but the picture was distorted and it stopped without warning halfway through! My wife was so annoyed with all this that she decided to return home early. To top it all off, I was treated very rudely by the restaurant hostess when I had breakfast in the morning. All in all, I was terribly dissatisfied with my stay: Opt for the Westin Bayshore or the Pan Pacific instead!

We, too, watched the marathon from our room on the 31st floor and from the lobby. In fact, on my way to Cafe Artigiano's around the corner, I felt like a participant. It's been almost two weeks since we stayed at the Marriott, and I deferred writing this until after I could achieve some sort of objectivity.

You see, we were given the best room on floor 31, the one that everyone says to snag, the one ending in --19. Not being a member of the hotel's loyalty program, I'm still wondering how this was done. Perhaps it had something to do with contacting the hotel itself three times before check-in. Our friends traveling with us were given a room on the 23rd floor with a nice but not as sweeping a view. All floors in many Canadian hotels seem to be accessed by cards that must be inserted in the elevator and will service that floor only. An excellent security measure.

The front desk and Concierge desk couldn't have been more helpful. They dispensed information from what bus to catch (and where to catch it) to how to find the nearest store that sells tonic water. No request too small. Our room itself, with its magnificent views of Stanley Park, Canada Place with its terminal, and sea planes, is an anomaly. A third of the room is given to a long hallway that curves around to reveal the bedroom. Yes, the bed is very comfortable and you have 7 pillows to play with and adjust accordingly. One guidebook criticized the hotel for its lack of imaginative room furnishings, and I suppose this could be a problem for someone who wants dramatic color contrasts. But it's very much like the plain pine furnishings found in many Swiss hotels. Our bathroom contained both bath and separate shower.

During our stay, we were issued four different notices, placed on our desk: window washers, road closures due to Marathon, water treatments during the night (!), and fire alarm inspections. Quite a list for the first weekend in May! But being prepared meant there would be no rude surprises during the day or night.

Because we are seniors, we paid $191 CA each night for the first three nights and $221 for the final night, probably to announce the beginning of the high season May 7. What is unusual is that as of April 1, the GST will no longer be refunded to visitors, and with the US dollar eroding even further, dollar parity will soon be achieved.

Much praise has already been given to Cafe Artigiano, which is now opened Sunday's. A superb Chinese restaurant two blocks near Canada Place is Imperial Chinese Seafood Restaurant, with very fresh fish specialties. (You must peruse the menu and look that the prices for Shark Fin soup without wincing.) CinCin is OK but prix fixe is definitely overpriced and the Tiramisù should be banned. Stick to the à la carte items. Canadians love Sunday brunch and one of the most popular places is Shaughnessy Restaurant at the Van Dusen Botannical Garden, easily reached by bus #17 four blocks away. Everyone seems to make it to Vij's, the #1 venue for Indian cuisine. And yes, the rumors are founded. Even on Monday, you will wait an hour for a table if you arrive at six or later. Get there early!

These recommendations were given to us by the concierge and also the result of asking around. The hotel itself is quite nice and very well located. If you don't demand perfection, you will be satisfied with the decent rates and you will be won over by the desk personnel and concierge staff.

Recently stayed at this hotel for a long weekend in Vancouver and was somewhat disappointed by the hotel because I was expecting more given some of the reviews.

The main negatives were:

-Rooms are quite small, we stayed at 2 other hotels in the area over the past couple of years (Renaissance, Westin Grand) and these are the smallest rooms of them all. It was very tight, especially with the baby crib in the room
-They have an odd parking system, in which you park your car, receive a ticket for your dashboard, and you go back down to the garage to place it on your car. So, in the time req'd to check in, the parking attendant gave me a ticket! So, I had to wait in line (again) to dispute the ticket with the front desk and they indicated that it happens "all the time". If so, why not change the system?
-A couple of times I was looking for the concierege and couldn't find him/her, so the front desk would help instead.

The postives were:
-Great and friendly housekeeping & front desk staff
-Clean and modern rooms (although the decor is somewhat bland)
-Great views from my room
-Great location - very close to Robson St
-The coffee house attached to the hotel (Cafe Artigiano) had the BEST coffee drinks (and I live in Seattle)

Everything about our stay was first-rate. The staff was friendly and very helpful and the room was clean, comfy and well-appointed. We were upgraded to the 28th floor without asking - what a view!

Best of all, the location was so convenient. We walked almost everywhere within 15 minutes; Robson St., Gastown, Stanley Park, even the ferry to Granville Island. The Sky Train station and bus stops are very close, and the hop-on, hop-off city tour shuttle stops right in front. The concierge was very helpful with directions and tips about what to see and how much time we'd need to plan for. We always felt safe in the area.

On our last day, the Vancouver Marathon ran right in front of the hotel, and the staff prepared the guests so that no one would be inconvenienced. The doorman even was able to drive cars along a small section of sidewalk so people could get out.

The only mild complaints would be that the Internet access rate ($16/day) was quite steep. The lobby was very small and sterile- looking, but who stays in the lobby? Also, there is huge construction in the area preparing for the Olympics, so traffic can be bad, with occasional noise.

Try the blueberry oatmeal and lemon ricotta muffins from the Cafe Artigiano coffee shop on the corner behind the hotel - YUM! Great coffee, too, puts Starbucks to shame. Also, the Victoria Chinese Restaurant in the Hyatt complex nearby had delicious food, a touch pricy, but huge servings. Authenic Chinese, not Americanized. The Lion Pub near Canada Place has excellent beer (try the Granville Island Creme Ale) and good pub grub.
