Spent 4 nights in the hotel. It was lovely. Clean, neat, tidy rooms and lovely comfortable bed. . Kitchen facilities were good. Good views from our apartment. The houskeeping staff were excellent. The staff were so welcoming and helpful, they made you feel that nothing was to much trouble. Loved the fact that we had a late afternoon flight and were able to check out and leave our luggage until we needed to go to the airport. All courtesy of the Hotel. Very convenient for shopping, sightseeing and getting around. Great gourmet food store across the road. Would definately go back to this Hotel.

Great hotel and location. Close to most things, free wifi, staff were cool. Great gourmet market and food hall across the road. Pink Elephant Thai place next door is cool too. Had a better bed before though.
Would definitely stay again.

Visited Vancouver with another couple, our friend booked us at this apartment hotel. Impeccable cleanliness, complete apartment with everything you need. Fantastic view on your private balcony. Easy walk to sites, restaurants and shopping. Great location. Everything they claim in their web site is true, maybe even better. True downtown Vancouver experience.

Room Tip: We stayed in a two bedroom suite

Lovely apartments in downtown, ten minute walk from centre of town, close to very pricey shops which were good for window shopping. Lovely comfy beds, en suite bathroom with one room and separate bathroom too. Small but comfy seating area. Free wifi, tv. Small but well equipped kitchen. Amazing deli opposite which we almost moved into!!!! Would return, good value.

My family and I lost a day of our stay here in Vancouver while we searched for an alternate hotel. We are a couple and two boys (9 and 15). The pre-paid room (through Flight Centre Melbourne) was for three beds - one suitable for a couple and one each for the boys. Carmana advised the booking was for one double bed and one king. Our documentation says to the contrary. Carmana Plaza insited that the boys share a bed. It finally turned out after much obfuscation that they had no such room arrangements available - other than next to the demolition site. For a six day stay, this was not acceptable. I paid directly for one night's accommodation in the noise exposed room and spent the evening looking for alternate accommodation.

The next morning, the manager offered a room with a king and double bed - and a room with a queen sized bed across the hall. This would now have my wife share with one of the kids and myself in a separate room. Alternatively, the 15 year old would be in his own separate room across the hall. (Not a legal offering for a hotel to make for an under 18 back in Oz and clearly not what we had booked or requested.) And this for a family holiday!

After noon, the hotel finally offered us a suite with a king in one bedroom and twins beds in the other - on the quiet side of the hotel. So, why could the hotel not say 20 hours earlier that it had a suitable room but was overbooked, or even that it would cost more? (I actually offered to pay any increment when we first arrived. All I got was a lecture that because the payment had been received from Flight Centre, the hotel could not discuss any incremental amount. Note that this lecture was never even in the context of having any suitable rooms, whether occupied or not!)

This has been unpleasant and time consuming. Carmana Plaza proved itself completely inept in accurately identifying the problem and dealing with it. We're here another 5 days and I cannot walk past reception without thinking of the hotel's ineptness. And this is costing over $400/night.

Mark Richardson

Room Tip: Insist on avoiding the east side demolition - six days a week, 7am to 6pm.

Carmana_Plaza, General Manager at Carmana Plaza, responded to this reviewResponded September 25, 2012

Dear Mr. Richardson,

I would like to extend our sincerest apologies once more for this unpleasant experience and would also like to thank you for your feedback – we are hopeful that for the remainder of your stay, we will be able to provide your family with a better experience. And as mentioned in my e-mail early Saturday morning, I am at your service should you require any assistance.

After further review, it unfortunately appears that we had been misinformed about the suite type needed. Since our Two-bedroom Suites have many different bed set-ups, we understand that it could potentially cause an issue if the incorrect bed type is booked. As a result, we are working with Flight Center (and all other agencies) to ensure that the bedding set-up of each of our suites is clearly communicated to potential guests, so that no further inaccuracies occur.

We do regret that the only suite type (with 3 beds) available upon your check-in was located on side of the building where the development was taking place. But more importantly, we should have informed you immediately that a more suitable suite was available the following day – and for this, we are truly sorry as it has impacted your vacation plans. We recognize that had you been advised sooner, your family could have focused on enjoying your first day in Vancouver instead of searching for alternate accommodations.

However, we do hope that the suite arranged for your family on Saturday (day after arrival) has been comfortable and that you`ve had a chance to enjoy Vancouver over the weekend.

Be assured that this matter is not being taken lightly and that we are re-evaluating our staff service performance to ensure that a positive guest experience remains the chief priority at all times.

We would also like to take this opportunity to provide you and the rest of the Tripadvisor community with information on the current development taking place next door and its potential impact to all of our guests. 745 Thurlow (www.745thurlow.com) is a new development by Bentall Kennedy and bcIMC, two of the most prolific developers in BC and across Canada. Once completed in 2015, it will be among the first office buildings in Downtown Vancouver to achieve LEED Core and Shell Gold certification.

Work currently takes place between 7:30 am – 6 pm (Monday–Friday) and 10 am – 6 pm (Saturday); however, during weekdays, work may continue until 8 pm, but no work is allowed on Sundays and Holidays. And although they are within the City of Vancouver’s noise and construction by-laws we understand that this can adversely impact our guests’ stay.

During this current stage of the demolition, it has generated considerable noise and some building vibrations. And unfortunately, the level of noise has been quite unpredictable, with some periods being surprisingly quiet as well. However, we have been re-assured by the Project Manager that this particular phase (removal of existing concrete parking structure) should be completed within the next few weeks (detailed updates are on their website).

Once completed in 2015, it will add to the already rapidly evolving 1000/1100 blocks of Alberni Street – an area poised to be Vancouver`s own mini version of Rodeo Drive, lined with high-end fashion boutiques and restaurants/cafes.

Please be assured that every effort is being made to minimize any inconvenience that the development may cause and that updated project time lines will be posted on our website very soon so all guests are kept informed of which phase of the development is taking place. We are also advising all guests at the time of booking and upon check-in of the possible impact – and we are optimistic that our efforts will help mitigate any disturbance resulting from the project.

Mark, I truly appreciate you bringing this up for discussion within the Tripadvisor community – it has been an excellent source of feedback for further improvement and a great information resource for travellers.

Sincerely,

Bennet Mak
General Manager
