“Beautiful!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 13, 2007

I really enjoyed staying at this hotel: it had great character, attractive rooms, friendly staff and a good location. A room with a shared bathroom was quite affordable (for a downtown hotel) and wasn't much of an inconvenience since there was a sink in our room.

Gated parking was $15 per night and there was a computer available with free internet access for guests.

I wish I could have stayed more than one night!

I was reading some of the reviews, and I felt I had to react. The hotel is much better than the reviews are showing. We stayed there last year and the year before (we came back twice to the same place as we found it was so good value for money). The hotel is one of the cheapest we found. The location is in downtown vancouver, so you can walk every where in the city. Ys, it is in front of the salvation army, but vancouver is a very safe city in general. I was a bit concerned about sharing the bathroom, but I could not believe the cleanliness of those shared bathroom. I don t rember the soap was cheap ... The rooms are small but very nicely decorated. the staff at the front desk is very helpful and one of them (Cecile) gave us some great tips (eg a all you can eat buffet in the same street, a great bakery and lunch restaurant) within walking distance. There is no elevators and no air conditionning but fans are more than enough. The free internet PC is also a great addition. I would definitely go back in the same place again.

This was a very charming, European-style hotel close to downtown that I found out about through a travel guidebook. Overall, my husband and I were very pleased with our experience there. The staff was very helpful, the hotel was impeccably clean and the location was central to most of the major attractions in the area. In fact, the hotel offers an information sheet listing important sights and how to get to them by using the many convenient buses close by.
The only downside about staying at the Victorian Hotel is the noise. Because the hotel has hardwood floors--which definitely add to the charm--sound is amplified. If you are a light sleeper, I would recommend ear plugs to avoid being woken up by your neighbors talking and moving around in the room above you in the middle of the night, or other guests taking showers at 4:00 in the morning. Additionally, rooms situated at the front of the hotel tend to get a lot of street noise. Opt for one in the back of the hotel if something like that would bother you.
Oh, and one other thing: The information pamphlet offered by the hotel, as well as the guidebook I was using, said that a continental breakfast was served in the lobby in the morning, which is in fact not the case. Only coffee and tea are provided.

This hotel was booked directly by my employer in Vancouver, so I didn't have any input into the choice. I was apprehensive about the location and the lack of elevator, size, age, etc. of the property.

However, it is about to undergo extensive renovations and already is a charmingly decorated and well-managed property. The owner, Miriam Mowat, is excited about her hotel and proud that she and her husband Andrew have succeeded so far in making it into a pleasant experience for visitors to Vancouver.

Most rooms must share bathroom facilities but have individual sinks in each room. Hairdryers and alarm clocks are provided. Some larger suites have their own bathrooms and provide a robe for the guest. My room did not have a closet, only wall hooks. The shared baths are updated, with excellent fixtures and pretty Victorian style.

There is a computer with free 24/7 access for the guests to use at their convenience, which I really appreciated. Coffee and tea are available near the front desk at all hours, and ice and soft drinks are sold at the front desk. The stairs are a bit more than I wanted to do with a heavy suitcase but the desk clerk or bellboy will help.

The location is in a mixed, lower-end neighborhood, with a noisy commercial alleyway in back of the hotel. Parking is available off-street. There are a couple of small restaurants nearby. Within a couple of blocks walking distance are several public transportation options. It is a family-oriented hotel with moderate rates. I would recommend it if you don't mind giving up a few conveniences.

This hotel is close to fun attractions, but the neighborhood itself is really horrible. Still, I could have put up with that except that the bathroom products were so cheap, and the water pressure so low that for 3 days I couldn't really clean up. Blech.

I don't regret my stay, but if you brave it bring earplugs for the bar-noise at night, and don't plan on staying too long. Next time I hit Vancouver I'll save up a few extra loonies and swing over to another neighborhood.

  • Liked — close to Gas Town
  • Disliked — water pressure in showers were terrible, homeless people everywhere

If you book a room at the bargain rate at this hotel, they will put you in a room you will not like. It is a bargain with the devil. We got stuck with room 16. It is on the lower floor to the right of the front desk. You will be serenaded by drunks at around midnight and become privy to the personal relationship problems of junkies at 3:00 AM. The windows overlook the alley and the Salvation Army. The room smells of cleaning fluids, is above the laundry or boiler (it was very stuffy and hot). Interestingly enough, the management puts two electric fans in the room which barely helped. They will not move you to another room once they get a sucker in 16. There is no water pressure in the shower. You cannot wash your hair. Bring your own soap because the soap and shampoo are incredibly cheap. The good news there is that they do not give you any more soap after the first day. Our first greeting from the hotel staff, ("Cecille" maybe?) was a reprimand for parking one and a half inches over the line in one of their incredibly narrow parking spaces. She made a federal (or provincial in Canada) case about it. No "good morning" or anything. Their parking lot is ridiculous. The evening desk help was extremely nice but powerless to do anything. Save your money and get something on the west side. The pictures on their website are deceptive.

  • Liked — Bed was nice.
  • Disliked — Noise, bad location, low water pressure

What a fiasco! We had booked this hotel with a credit card in October 2006. We arrived Sat, July 14th at 9PM after 10 hours of flying. We were told by the desk clerk that because we had not recomfirmed our reservations, our room had been given away at 6PM!!!!!!!! We were told that they had attempted to contact us several times via e-mail and phone to reconfirm our reservation, but could never reach us! Funny (or not so funny), our e-mail address hadn't changed and neither had our phone number.
So, here we were, with no hotel room. We told them that we expected them to find us another room in the area for the same price. Reluctantly, the desk clerk made a few calls. Everyone was full except for a B&B "10 minutes away" for the same price. Well, the cab driver could not find the place.even with his GPS. He called the Victorian Hotel to ask further directions, after 20 minutes of trying to find the place. but was told by someone new manning the desk, that she had no idea what he was talking about. The B&B never did pick up their phone!!!! The cab driver finally found us a place to stay 20 minutes away from where we wanted to be. What a disastrous night!!!!!!!

The girl at the desk treated us like we were the biggest fools that ever lived for not having re-confirmed our original reservation! She said that's what everyone does. That's news to us, for sure and everyone else that we told our story to. Management was not at all concerned that we had to place to stay. If we hadn't stood our ground for the clerk to find us a room, she would have left us on our own in the middle of the night.

We will never, ever stay there again and would recommend that no one else stay there either, unless you want this to happen to you!!!!!!
