We came in late at night and left early the next morning, so didn't get to sample the local area. The hotel was older but neat and clean. We needed something near the Amtrack station (10 minute cab ride) that was reasonable price but not in a bad neighborhood. We'd go back.

What the hotel lacks in modern amenities in makes up for in charm. Friendly, helpful staff and probably the best location in the city. Highly recommended.

My boyfriend and I stayed at this hotel for three nights during our summer trip to British Columbia. This is a family hotel with a lot of charm. The staff was very friendly and super helpful.
Our room was clean and spacious, although it was not above the tree line so we did not have much of a view. I suggest asking for a room on a higher floor to have a view of the Bay.
What we loved the most about this hotel was its location. It is right outside Stanley Park and has a great view over the English Bay. There's a bike rental shop some blocks away and it's quite easy to rent bikes and go for a tour of Stanley Park and other parts of downtown Vancouver. There are also lots of shops, cafes and restaurants close by.
We really enjoyed watching the sunsets over the English Bay while sipping wine on the hotel terrace. We had dinner one evening on the hotel terrace and the food was quite good. Breakfast at the hotel was fine, nothing exceptional.
We would definitely stay there again on our next trip to Vancouver.

This hotel is on the sea front at English Bay, not downtown but plenty of action and places to eat nearby, good strolling into Stanley Park and around the bay and walkable to Canada Place etc. The atmosphere is very pleasant, rooms clean and comfortable (you could be lucky enough to get a sea view), and there is a reasonably priced restaurant and bar overlooking the bay. Only fault was - no coffee & tea making facilities in the room, which we found in all other Canadian hotels.

If you've seen the Cohen Bros. movie, you know what I mean. As a travel writer, I know the difference between shabby chic and just plain shabby. This is shabby, and really overpriced. Left after one long, sleepless night (crying in adjacent room, they probably booked two nights). For $30 more, moved to the Westin and saved our trip.

I am disappointed that you did not enjoy your stay. The Sylvia Hotel is not a good fit for everyone. It is a heritage site as it was the first hotel built in Vancouver in 1912. As others have written on this site, we have a charm and location that is hard to beat. If you were disturbed by a baby crying in the next room we could have moved you to another room if you would have notified the front desk. I feel that you have unfairly judged our hotel and I can assure you that many guests are delighted to keep comming back year after year. As far as price goes, our other guests comment on the value they recieved at the Sylvia Hotel. Everyone is intitled to thier opinion and we can agree to disagee with yours.

My brother recommended we stay at the Sylvia, a charming old hotel on English Bay. The location is terrific. We had a lovely corner room facing the Bay on the second floor. The furniture is old fashioned but clean and we really had everything we needed. Lovely cocktail lounge. This is not for people looking for a contemporary hotel but the service was delightful, the rooms were fine and I would return

The hotel is situated right at English Beach and next to Stanley Park. We got a suite - the last available rooms- with two rooms and a kitchen, windows facing the sea. It was spectacular, but it all cost something... The rooms were clean and spacious. There is a garage, but we had to pay 15 dollars to park our car. The athmosphere was very friendly. Unfortunately we didn't try the restaurant, it looked good, but we'll come back!
