“perfect location, charming hotel”
Reviewed April 12, 2006

I loved the Sylvia. The Four Seasons she ain't and the old girl shows her age, but her charm is evident. The service is very good, everyone is cheerful and accomodating. The location is fantastic-beautiful views, stanley park, sea wall. Denman street has great coffee shops and restaurants. Vera's burger shack rocks. I highly recommend the Sylvia Hotel for budget travelers and those for whom location and charm are more important than opulence.

Ready to leave your car in the parking lot and REALLY enjoy Vancouver? The Sylvia is the place! English Bay beach is outside the front door, dozens of great restaurants and shops are within a kilometre, and the whole Stanley Park seawall walk is moments away for you keen hikers.

Our family of four had a top floor room with 10-foot ceilings and SIX windows facing in two directions, 2 queen beds, a single, and a double pullout -- for $120 Cdn per night! I couldn't believe the price. The surprise continued at breakfast, which was in a charming room facing the bay, good quality and very inexpensive.

The building IS a little run-down, but the sheets are soft and clean, the beds are comfortable, the staff is pleasant and helpful. My one great fear is that someone will redevelop this charmer into something I can't afford!

We only got to stay one night but we loved it. What a great hotel. And the PRICE!!! I would think that they would charge more for the quaintness. Don't expect luxury. But if you've ever seen the movie "Somewhere In Time" you'll know what I mean. I felt like I went back in time.
If the place had been expensive, I guess we wouldn't have been so happy there. But at their price, it was a great place to stay.
No air conditioning. No screens on the windows (watch the kids).
Very central to shopping, the park and the bay.
Be SURE to check out Liliget Feast House at 1724 Davie Street for authentic native food (a little expensive but you won't care if you have some fire water!).
I will be sure to stay here again!!!

Pets are welcome!! Gorgeous on-the-waterfront English Bay location. Very quiet residential neighborhood surroundings. The famous Stanley Park is within walking distance. Watch sunsets from their pub and enjoy an unimpeded view of English Bay. Or, cross the quiet street from the hotel entrance and take your dog for a walk along the paved walkways of the clean, manicured English Bay beach park (no dogs allowed on the sandy part of the beach where people swim). Rooms are charming, old-world, homelike comfortable...nothing luxurious or fancy-glitzy. Has a nice English Club atmosphere. Very clean. Exceptionally helpful and friendly staff. Walk to Stanley Park and to a huge selection of restaurants serving practically any ethnic cuisine you want. Parking attendant and parking on premises makes it easy for those travelling by car. They have a website with photos. Recommend making reservation waaaay ahead of time. The Sylvia Hotel used to be a best kept secret, but people like me keep raving about it and it is becoming very well known. Prices are very good for low-middle to high-budget travellers. I will always stay at The Sylvia Hotel whenever I am in Vancouver.

I have to say that I found this place overwhelmingly disapointing. It is not historic and charming - just old and worn out. Rooms were cold and dimly lit,and the desk did nothing to alleviate the problem. In fact the woman "in charge" was quite hostile. The hotels saving grace was the location. Stunning, though not worth a second stay.

Great location next to the beach and Stanley Park. Room was on the small side but clean and pleasant enough.

...but just couldn't.

The Sylvia was recommended to us by a friend local to Vancouver who said that it was a charming, locally owned hotel in a great location.

The location was truly lovely, but although the hotel staff were competent and friendly, the hotel itself was sadly lacking in every respect.

The elevators are horribly small and outdated. The carpets are dirty, worn and buckling. The third floor corridor baseboards had holes in the plaster work, and the smell was truly odd.

The room was clean enough, but very dimly lit and the acoustical tile on the ceiling was not what I would call charming. The bathroom was the only bright spot - teeny tiny (TRULY) but at least cute in its way. The furniture was worn and the mattresses were hard. The paint scheme was even bland.

I truly wanted to like this place, but honestly, couldn't find much to like. What a disappointment...can't figure out what rooms all the folks who wrote glowing reviews stayed in, because ours was awful, as were the common areas.

Oh, and the breakfast food at the restaurant wasn't very good...all around, I'd say to avoid this place unless you don't have another choice in the area.
