“Delightful historic hotel on English Bay”
Reviewed April 14, 2013

The Sylvia Hotel, 100 years old this year, is a unique gem in Vancouver. It's not fancy, there is no gym of pool, but it is loaded with character and charm. Unabashedly old-fashioned, it is dog-friendly, the staff is super helpful and the location is perfect... the beach is right across the street, Stanley Park is a block away and Denman street with its wonderful restaurants is a block in the other direction.

Yes you are correct we are 100 years old, we have tried to keep the charm of days gone by as that is what our guests like the most. I will post your comments in the lunch room to show the staff that their service was noticed and appreciated. Next trip bring a friend to enjoy the Sylvia and the surrounding area. I hope that you come back again soon.

What an incredible place to say ! We felt safe and secure, cared for and so welcome.....almost as good as coming home to mom! My sister has been there a few times, but my 1st....had not been to Vancouver in 20 years, so was very nice to see the sights on the Hop on Hop off trolley, English Bay is second to none, all safe walking areas, excellent restaurant and room service. Planning a longer stay next year. The room we had was awesome....love to open those huge windows and see the water, the cool breeze at night to sleep, quiet streets, look at all the ships docked....like the best eye candy you could get for such a great price !!!! The staff were all so helpful, and truly interested in our comfort.....I'd like to pack up now and move right in ! One of the best things, was the age and history of the place.....we all seem to forget the history ! And the charm of previous times....a beautiful view with a beautiful story...beautiful memories, I cannot thank you enough !

Room Tip: What's keeping you.....go directly to Sylvia's !

The hotel is charming and the location breathtaking. This was a return visit after thirty years. Hasn't changed a bit.The elevators are a chalenge to operate--to be expected in a 100 year old building.

Room Tip: The wifi was a weak signal in room 238

Welcome back after 30 years, thanks for the great comments and rating. The location is one of the best in Vancouver to be close to everything and yet away from the downtown core and all that noise. The elevators were one of the first to be installed in Vancouver so they are a little small but every safe. We hope it will not be 30 years before we see you again.

Thank-you for staying with us, we are a quiet place to enjoy the views and company. For that reason we do not have TV’s in our Lounge. We hope to see you again soon.

We stayed with friends here to bike and explore around Stanley park. The location of this property was excellent for that purpose. Many great places to eat and many places to see - all within easy walking distance. Inside parking was available for the cars and there was secure bike storage available.

That said the hotel itself is really showing its age and it seems that little has been done update it to accommodate the modern traveler. There is no air conditioning and when we were there it was quite hot. The only way to cool off the room @ night was to have the windows open but our room was above a very busy street so you paid for the cooler air with the much higher noise level. We have stayed in Hotels far older than this one in Europe that had been updated and that were delightful in every way so I don't believe it unreasonable to expect that this could have been better.

Pluses: Location, price
Cons: Quality of accommodations; slow service in the dining room; street noise

Room Tip: If you request a room facing the bay then the higher floors would be better. Less noise and view no...

Thank-you for your comments, I am sorry that you required an air conditioner for your room. We do have fans in each room for that reason. We get so many comments about guests enjoying the fact that they can open the windows for fresh air instead of having to breath the air that has been forced through an air conditioner and in Vancouver over the past 100 years we only have 3-5 days a year that require an air conditioner and with all the positive comments about not having an conditioners and having windows that open wide we will continue to respect those comments. I hope that you will consider staying with us again on your next visit to Vancouver.

You are correct we are an older hotel, in-fact on of the oldest in Vancouver, 100 year old this year. The location has been very popular with our guests, the beach, Stanley Park and all the shops close by added to your experience. I hope that your friends enjoyed Vancouver.
