Stayed for 3 nights in mid-August.
Great location for Stanley park and the local beach
You can walk around Stanley park one direction and along the ocean to Granville island ferry access in the other
In beautiful neighborhood, near many restaurants, shops, coffee places
Room spacious, bed comfortable, bathroom nice
Great, helpful staff

I stayed at the Sylvia for 5 nights in mid August with my husband and his 16-year old twin daughters. We loved the hotel, loved our rooms, and had the best little vacation imaginable.
The location of this hotel is the very best - hands down. From the hotel, we struck out each day to explore Vancouver. We rode bikes around Stanley Park one morning; we walked downtown several times; we walked to Gas Town, Yale Town, and Chinatown; we took the ferry to the market under the bridge. All these outings were very easy and safe. We ate at the Sylvia and enjoyed our meal - we also ate at nearby Rain City and Simba's a couple of times each. Wonderful restaurants all.
The weather during our trip was perfect...we even had the surprise of seeing 2,000 zombies arrive in the park one late afternoon. That was a "once in a lifetime" event. Don't even think about staying any place other than the Sylvia. Reasonable rates, clean, comfortable rooms, comfy beds, and killer location. What more do you want?

Room Tip: Reserve early and ask for a view room. We traveled last minute so didn't get this type of room...

Thank-you for your comments, so many families in the summer does exactly what your family has done. Making the Sylvia your home base and planning events each day means that you have everything you need with-in walking distance. The zombie walk is a treat to see, it only happens one day a year but what a site, so fun to see 2000 people all dressed up walking around the west end, I am so happy your children were able to see it. Your tip is good, however just so that we do not mislead anyone, we do only take requests for room locations but to do guarantee because of the number of changes made by current guests. Hope to see you again in the future

We vacation in Vancouver almost every summer for the last 20 years or so and look forward to staying at the historic Sylvia. We actually sleep as well as at home. Maybe it is the ocean air when we open the windows? The beds are perfection, so comfortable. And the think, old timbers of the old section make everything quite and solid feeling.

The hotel is old, but well kept up, clean, neat and nice furnishings. The tiny ancient elevators are unique and fun. The staff are professional, friendly, helpful and make you feel like they care about keeping your business.

Probably one of the best aspects of the Sylvia is the location on Stanley Park and across the street from the beach. We enjoy walking around the park, into the wooded trails and often spend whole days without driving, walking to the art museum and wonderful restaurants, and enjoying the many gardens. Denmon Street one block away is lively, and filled with little cafes, ice cream and dessert places.

People enjoy the beach and you are right on it when you stay at the Sylvia. We like to go to Bard on the Beach near by for the best Shakespeare you could find anywhere (and great prices). Breakfast at the Sylvia gives you a view of the beach and English Bay. Inspirational. We have had so many great memories of relaxing and enriching vacations while staying at the Sylvia.

Now, keep in mind that it is more than 100 years old. You can pay more (or even less) for newer, nicer hotels closer to the concrete jungle of down town. But, for us, staying at the Sylvia is like having our a place in the city. Highly recommend it.

Room Tip: Check out the Fish House a few blocks away in Stanley Park. Every dish is superb, simple and tasty...

I am so happy that you mentioned the quality of our beds, after all in my mind we "sell sleep" so we make sure that all the beds are in the best shape and replaced often. I will be printing off your comments and posting them in the lunch room for the crew to see, thank-you for all the kind words. I hope that we can continue to serve you for the next 20 years, thanks again for the great scores and comments.

Amazing location right on English Bay next to Stanley Park. Cheap considering where it is. Funky low-key apartment suites. A hotel with history and charm. Super expensive restaurant. No wi-fi in rooms, which forces you to go to the lobby and become part of the Sylvia clique. Limited parking. 10/10

I like the comments about the value, I agree for the location and service we offer. I might add that the wireless is free and is in every room and common areas as well. I am sorry if you had a problem, in the future could you please let one of my crew know and we can take care of the issue you may have had. If you could call me about your comments about the price of our restaurant as we feel that we offer good value and I have not heard anyone say that we are over priced in the past. So I would love to hear from you.

We found this hotel searching for a place on our last night in Vancouver. It's a real gem. It's an old hotel - 99 years young - but clean and in a great location. English Bay park/beach is right across the street and was a great place to people-watch and catch an amazing sunset. Lots of good restaurants easy walking distance. Easy walk to Stanley Park as well and their great Aquarium.

I am happy that you found us and based on your comments I believe you will be back. 99 years young I like that, yes next year we will be 100 years old and still offering great customer service. The location is one of the best in Vancouver for all the reasons you mentioned. We will look forward to your next visit.

This is a decent and clean hotel with friendly and responsive staff. They were always cheerful and helped me with directions whenever I needed. This is an older building and rooms are of an older style. That becomes obvious with the older-style wall plugs (some of mine didn't seem to work) and old fashioned keys (no key cards here). These aren't big deals and I enjoyed my stay.

There are a few improvements that the hotel could make to the room. For example, the walk-in closet is great, but there's no light in there and it could definitely use one. Key card systems are standard in hotels these days and could be used here -- as it is now, you're supposed to leave your key at the desk every time you exit the hotel. Some of the bathroom light switches are above the mirror and would be out of reach for some guests. Finally, it felt odd having open windows with pigeons strolling and cooing constantly on the ledge right outside - it may not be a big deal, but it took away from the view and it seemed unsanitary to me to have pigeons hanging around so close by.

This hotel's real selling point - and this overshadows everything - is its incredible location just off the beach at English Bay. You can literally cross the street and go suntanning or take a stroll or run around the seawall. Just down the street, on Denman, are bike rental places that can equip you with bikes. Also nearby are hundreds of restaurants and coffee shops covering just about every type of cuisine imaginable. If you're looking to relax in Vancouver, this is the place to be.

To get here by transit, grab a bus at the Yaletown Skytrain Station (on the Canada Line from the airport) - many of them go down Davie all the way to Denman which is the nearest major intersection.

You have made my day with your opening comments, I agree with you on some of your comments about some improvements that could be made, we are always trying to get into the rooms to do some of the work that needs to be done, however we are always so busy we can only do some of that work in the off season. Looks like you enjoyed your stay and we are very happy about that. Please come back anytime.

Stayed 4 days here and loved the location! Next to Stanley Park and 200 feet from the walking/ bike path and the beach. This is not a hotel for everyone if you're expecting a Marriott. It is an old historic building... with a European feel. Lighting in the room was minimal... a ceiling fan or floor fan would've made a huge difference in the stuffiness. my room was small and the bathroom incredibly tiny.
But I wasn't in the room that much.
Bus stop was only 2 blocks away and very easy to figure out where you want to go. The whole city is very walkable and navigating is a breeze. Everyone was very friendly !
The Hop on- hop off bus is just across the street a block down.
Many many restaurants on Denman street.... very walkable and felt very safe at all times.
HOTEL Value was ok.

Our location does make it easy to get around the city, we are the oldest hotel in Vancouver and I feel that we are special for so many reasons. I was happy to read that you enjoyed your stay. Hope to see you again soon.
