Stayed 2 nights while at meetings in Vancouver. Renaissance is in a very convenient spot. The room decor is slightly dated, but it is comfortable enough. There was a fridge, which was very nice. Just down the street on the corner of Bute and Cordova, there is an "urban" supermarket, very convenient for snacking/breakfast needs. I got a yogurt there for breakfast, but it got frozen as my fridge was clearly over -cooling... A colleague complained that hers wasn't cold enough. I guess this is just a warning not to take anything for granted! The coffee/teamaker with a selection of drinks was helpful for this weary traveller. The fact that internet did not appear to be free was a bit of a shock, however, as it turned out the fee was waived at check-out. Why then it appears as if one was paying? Why unnecessarily get a guest a bit unhappy? My room had opening sliding doors - a window, really, but some fresh air was nice. There was no free plug by the bedstand for my iPhone - an automatic deduction...
The bell desk staff and everybody downstairs was just super nice - got great recommendations for dinner from Anthony, and lost of smiles from others - and they actually looked as if they meant it when they wished me a good day... It is a busy place though, and if you crave serenity, you only get it once in your room, but because of all the conventions, it may take a while before you get there... Free morning Globe and Mail was nice too.

Good location close to restaurants, sea walk, sky train,
Clean rooms, attentive concierge and staff, generous size rooms.
Stayed here for one week.
Fee for internet connection in room was waived. Did not have a car so did not have to pay for parking, which is pricy. Check often for rates to get a super saver one as we did.

Stayed here for a weekend getaway in April 2014. Overall, it was a great experience. We had a harbourview room that looked out directly over the water. We could watch the boats and planes come and go all day long. We also had a little porch that we could go out on to enjoy the air and get a better view. I wish the porch had chairs, though, since it would have made sitting there more enjoyable.

The staff were all wonderful. The cost to valet the car for the weekend was very reasonable, especially considering that the hotel is downtown and in the middle of everything. We walked to Stanley Park and Gastown very easily.

Overall, great stay. I'd happily stay here again on my next trip.

I ran across this idiotic practice recently in San Diego at the Marriott Del Mar and vowed never to stay at a Marriott again.

Unfortunately, I'm brand unconscious and didn't realize Renaissance was a Marriott "brand" and had the same idiotic policy.

Worse still the weasels advertise "free internet" which they have in the lobby, but not in the rooms. So you have to trudge down to the lobby every 4 hours to get a new access code and reconnect when you get back to your room... or pay.

In this day and age, especially considering how inexpensive providing internet access is, it should be bundled in the room rate and be done with. Will never stay at a Marriott or Renaissance ever again.

doc_zen,

Thank you for the review. Yes, as with most branded full service hotel chains we do currently charge for in room Wi-Fi (per 24 hour period). In addition to this service we offer complimentary access to Wi-Fi in our lobby and lounge. For complimentary Wi-Fi bundled with your room rate Marriott has a number of select service hotels for you to choose from and can all be found on marriott.com.

Again, thank you for your time and feedback.

Regards,

Kevin Miller

Excellent value for money, great location between Stanley Park and a few blocks from city centre. Really good gym and pool facilities and incredibly helpful staff, doormen, navigators (city travel adviser). We paid an extra CAN 50 per day to have access to the Executive club room which seemed like a good deal as 4 of us had breakfast in there each day and early evening snacks.
Probably more of a business hotel but for a family on a short stay it was ideal.

Room Tip: View of harbour and sea planes landing

My friend and I booked this place blindly on hotwire the day before our arrival. The price was right, the location near Stanley Park and train was just what we wanted. It is in the middle of the downtown business district so seemed mostly geared towards business travelers but was more than sufficient for us as well.

Cannot beat the location here - fantastic views of the North Shore mountains, all of the activity in the harbour, walking distance to all the sites. Easily stroll to Stanley Park, sea wall, downtown, Gas Town....Hotel is bright and cheery. Service was excellent. Standard rooms are a good size, large bathroom, comfy beds, large windows AND a balcony that opens up to look at the mountains. Be careful when asking the taxi to take you to the Marriott, there is another Marriott across the street so be very specific which Marriott you want! Easy access too from the Canada Line train to/from the airport. Won't disappoint.
If you are lucky enough to use the executive lounge, the gals serving there are top notch. I watched them as they greeted new and previous guests personally. Breakfast and afternoon snacks in the lounge was great value.

Room Tip: Be sure to ask for a room facing the North Shore/Harbour!
