We stayed here for 3 nights en-route to Whistler. It's a lovely hotel, quite funky with a modern art inspired design. It's clean and the room we had was spacious with good storage. The service is very good and friendly, and it basically has everything you need for a few night stay.
The only real thing I would complain about is actually the location. It's not bad by any means, and is very central and on Robson Street which is the main shopping avenue. But we found ourselves constantly undertaking the 15 minute walk down to the Yaletown/Gastown end of town where most of the interesting stuff is, including when we walked down to get the boat to Granville Island. By itself that's not too bad, but when you do that walk 4 times a day for 3 days it gets a bit annoying. I would be inclined to stay somewhere at this end of Robson Street purely for that convenience.
That aside, I would happily recommend The Listel.

We were staying in the Listel for a conference. We drove down from Penticton at the crack of dawn to make it it time for the conference start at 12:30pm. We expected to have to park the car and run straight in to the conference, certainly we didn't expect our room to be ready that early... after all, check out time was at 1pm for the previous night's guests. However a room was available for us. Which meant that we had a chance to settle into our room and freshen up before heading into a professional headspace. It was a blessing after a 5.5 hour drive!!

The room was clean, quiet and the bed was really very comfy.
The bathrooms are a little older - but they are very clean and that's what really counts.

The conference facilities were just what was needed and we were kept well watered and fed throughout.

That night we ate at Forage, the restaurant in the hotel and it was spectacular.

The next day, we decided to check out before our full day conference started and our porter kindly offered to load our car with our belongings so that we could have time for breakfast - what an outstanding offer! It meant that we were able to enjoy a leisurely breakfast at Forage before diving into a full day. These kinds of touches make all the difference to my experience.

The location is great, the service is fantastic and the value is obvious. We will stay at the Listel whenever we need a super-central location.

The hotel has a friendly community feel unlike my experience at regular hotels. The staff were warm, generous and authentic. The art is a wonderful touch, and I didn't even make it into the galleries.

Near Stanley Park with an easy reach to all the best places in town. Confortable and warm; no noise from the other rooms or from the hall.
Decoration a bit old fashioned, I was expecting a real artistic and modern room but it was ok. Very friendly staff. Very good breakfast at the Forage ( taste the vegetable juices they are great!!) I will go back for sure!

Excellent place to stay in downtown Vancouver. Nearby great restaurants; free access to an outside gym. I recommend. Free local and Canada wide phone calls; clean rooms; not noisy; Rooms are spacious; I come to Vancouver regularly for business, 2-3 times per year. I always stay at the Listel.

The taxes/service charge of 23% of the total hotel bill is excessive, in my opinion. Guests have unlimited local and US long distance calls, but most guests would not find this a benefit. The Gallery rooms and terrific location are the best selling features of this hotel.
