We arrived at the Listel a bit tired, having taken a whale watching tour that morning. But that doesn't excuse the staff on the reception. To be fair they weren't aggressive just quite unhelpful to say the least. We booked a suite room on Expedia only to find that we were given a low down standard room facing a brick wall. I wouldn't be too amused if I had paid to stay in that room. We realized that it wasn't the right room but the reception took a different view. After one hour in which time my wife had to do everything with Expedia. The reception weren't interested in sorting out our room and stipulated that this happens regularly with Expedia and that the customer has to deal with it. Really helpful!!! Why only here.
The bar and restaurant have never been up to much but this time took the prize, the barman starting getting political about Ireland because I'm originally from the north. What an absolute muppet. I'm on a vacation and actually had to be subjected to this tripe by a member of staff. I usually enjoy a good banter but this was highly obnoxious. The suite rooms are nice and the locations good but some dodgy rooms and some unhelpful staff. Though not the housekeeping they were really professional and friendly.

Room Tip: If booking through Expedia etc make sure you get the right room not one low down facing a wall

A great advantage of the Listel Hotel is its location. It's a reasonable walk from the Sky Train's City Center station, even with carry-on luggage. (By the way, the Sky Train, Canada Line is definitely the fast, cheap, and easyily-navigated option for getting into the city proper from the airport.) So, coming or going from VYR is very doable. The hotel is located on Robson St., on one of the the city's main shopping drags, but in the residential West End so you'll not be overcome with too much noise and late-night traffic. There are many restaurants within walking distance, too. And, we found having a Whole Foods just a couple of blocks down Robson very convenient.

We also walked to Stanley Park -- a bit of a hike but not too bad. You can also walk easily to and from Hornby St. where there is an Avis office if you plan to rent a car for an out-of-city day trip. This worked well for us. Almost across the street is the Blue Horizon Hotel which is a major pick-up/drop-off spot for many tours (hop-on-off trolley, etc.) and you can request a pick-up there from Pacific Coach if you are doing the coach/ferry combo to Victoria. We did this and found it worked very well. The hotel pick-up cost a bit extra, but is worth it. This arrangement requires a reservation with Pacific Coach.

The Listel itself is fairly basic for it's rate structure-- we were comfortable but found nothing to rave about. I think their standard room is rather pricey for the level of amenities. (It would be nice to have at least a comp bottle of water when you arrive after a long day of travel!) The staff was consistently helpful and professional.

I think there is quite a big difference among what you get according to different room types -- e.g. we stayed in two different rooms; the second was much more posh and got us the comp French press coffee another reviewer mentioned, but that we were not offered in the first room. This might be worth checking out before you book.

We stayed at The Listel twice last March. Found it by chance online and it was great. Modern, smart layout and furnishings, and superb artwork everywhere. Good, helpful, unpretentious service, and the restaurant and bar are wonderful, plus there are so many great restaurants (all cuisines) within walking distance. The rooms were very comfortable and spacious. Loved the double mirrors with basin on one and countertop under the other. When we returned to Vancouver we thought we might try a different hotel, but it was so horrible we checked out immediately and went straight back to the Listel - and always will.
Easy walk to most areas of Vancouver downtown, and a bus or taxi will get you everywhere else. Very reasonably priced for what you get. A late review but well deserved.

Room Tip: 5th and 6th floors (maybe 4th too, not sure) on the north side give you great glimpses of the harbour and mountains through the cityscape.

We were on a gallery floor...our room was pretty basic actually. A few of the fixtures could use updating and our view was of a back alley and condos. We did like the vanity area seperated from the toilet and shower. And, also enjoyed the comp french press coffee delivered to the room on request...very good coffee! Breakfast was very good, and the location of the hotel is pretty decent for shopping.

We didn't care for lack of a self park option. Valet parking wasn't cheap either. We also noticed several taxes on our bill that I don't recall seeing at other hotels in the area. We might return, but maybe only if we leave our car at home.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing Robson if you want a bit of a view.
