“Great stay at Sutton Place Hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 9, 2014

Was here for a conference, May 3-6. Location is great, about a 10 min walk to Vancouver Convention Center. There are a lot of great restaurants within walking distance on Thurlow and Robison streets. Area felt quite safe. Room was huge probably around ~700 sf with king bed and separate sitting area with desk. Bed was very comfortable. Room was quiet as well. Fitness center was actually a good size with weights and cardio equipment. No onsite restaurant currently as they are renovating but one will be there soon. Hotel is a little dated and could use some sprucing up but overall was quite nice. Wifi was provided free - not sure if it was due to the fact that I had a group rate at my convention.

Just back from a wonderful 3 nights at Sutton Place. Location is just excellent! Both for walking to Stanley Park and Yaletown for dinner. Also handy to the University (we were moving our son out of Rez), thought Burrard Street bridge renos would be an issue, not a big issue... traffic moves. Must say the friendlyness of staff was a treat. Our car had to be parked in the oversized location further away due to a tule rack, always met with a smile by the valet parking guys. Truely friendly and personable. My only small complaint would be the pillows...why do most hotels only have huge hard pillows. No normal person has a body type that fits such hard monster pillows. Just leads to a sore neck, I resorted to using a rolled up towel. However, our stay was really great and this will be our new hotel when visiting our kids at UBC.

I have stayed at the Sutton three times. The subsequent visits, I was never welcomed back.

Staff are somewhat friendly, depending on the department - valets and bell hops seem to always be in a good mood and ready to help; not so much with the other departments.

Fantastic location. Close to some great pubs and food. Close to some great shopping. Only about a 10 minute walk from the harbour which makes for a great evening walk or early morning run.

The rooms seem to be getting tired. Fixtures seem a bit old, and many amenities could be replaced to a level that would be expected in a hotel that rates itself as 5 stars.

Overall, a 4 star rating.

I have stayed in this hotel for many years, since the days of Le Meridien. It was a suburb hotel, but over the years has lost its charm and focus, especially since new owners (Sandman Inn owners) bought it. It has lost its attention to details, has let sofas, beds, linens and pillows age and quite frankly become much like the neglect shown in most Sandman Hotels as they have aged. Difference is at a Sandman you do not expect 4 or 5 star accommodation and do not pay the prices of the Sutton Place. I have had bad experiences there over the past 3 years on more than a few occasions and frankly I have little interest in ever returning. There are far better hotels in Vancouver, that offer far better value. Oh and did I mention the arrogance of some of the staff? Look elsewhere when visiting Vancouver.

Room Tip: They have remodeled some rooms but left old furniture that is showing its age and is not comfortable...

What a fantastic hotel in a great location! Very convenient to get around. Lovely welcoming and helpful staff. Rooms are nice although dated. The bed was amazingly comfortable. Definitely recommend staying here and would go back next time I'm in Vancouver. Didn't try the food so can't comment on breakfast or dinner.

I have been delighted by many hotels and I was hoping to be delighted by this one, but I was not. Perhaps my expectations are too high, as there is nothing really wrong with it, but I likely won’t return. There was noise from the traffic on Burrard St., and construction of the new restaurant. I was woken up twice by housekeeping: once in the morning (I did not have the sign up) and later during a quick nap (when I did have the sign up). They waived the outrageous parking fees ($40/day) to compensate so they did try to satisfy, but I felt that they were going through the motions rather than genuinely trying to please. Both the housekeeper and the front desk person made it quite clear that the problem was not their fault. True, perhaps, but not helpful or empathetic.

Pros:
• I like the baby fresh scent of the comfy bath robe
• nice Gilchrist and Soames amenities
• has all the furnishing and room amenities you expect: fridge with well stocked mini bar and some snacks (for purchase); coffee maker (cost $2.50 for extra tea or coffee); desk with internet (cost extra); TV/DVD, alarm clock, etc.
• large, well equipped gym and large indoor pool and whirlpool, with an outside sitting area
• the concierge, Miguel, is friendly and helpful with suggestions
• you might see TV/movie stars
• heart of downtown location

Cons:
• heating/air system is noisy (fan going off and on) and the room was chilly at times, and too warm later
• traffic noise even from high floors (maybe ask for room on mountain facing side?)
• you can pay $6 plus $3 service charge (plus tip) for a half grapefruit, or go to the grocery store half a block away
• bedside lamp on one side only
• no iPod dock
• DVD player required an “engineer” to figure out how to use (we are pretty tech savvy, but the setting was obscure and no instructions are there). It wasn’t even plugged in and we had to move a heavy cabinet to get at the outlet. You can get free DVDs from the concierge, but they are mostly old and not very good.
• as someone else noted, we did not find the pillows comfortable (but the bed was OK)
• OK if get a promotional rate, but definitely not 5* and not worth the regular rates. (I stayed in a “deluxe” room.) Maybe more expensive rooms are better.

Room Tip: Ask for view of mountain or park, away from traffic and renovation noise Try to negotiate free park...

We had a great time and the service was excellent. The view from the room was beautiful. The room was clean. Breakfast was well done and timely. The spa experience was top notch and very relaxing. We look forward to our next stay.
