“Just Okay”
Reviewed June 3, 2013

I've been to several different Chinatown's in the States, so I had a certain expectation. This was my least favorite experience for sure. It's incredibly dirty in Chinatown so unless you have a recommendation for a restaurant, you may want to avoid them. The stores are mostly crowded with cheap items meant to attract tourist, I'm assuming - but these places were mostly a turn off for me. There was one called "Arts and Crafts" near the Asian Gardens that we liked though, so that was a nice exception. And another called Zodiak (I think) right in front of the garden that was clean and you could walk in and turn around without knocking things over. We won't go back here though.

“Very dirty”
Reviewed May 30, 2013

Walked to here after picking up attraction leaflet from information centre. Passed someone sitting injecting drugs whilst on way visiting first point of attraction. If time is short & there is an alternative attraction to view I would suggest opting out of Chinatown.

“Love the gateway”
Reviewed May 18, 2013

I love the gateway, however, other than Dr. Garden, boring.
Not enough of an ethnic feel when we walk down th narrow sidewalks. Would better to close off the street as pedestrian area. Would give the area greater charm and allow shoppers to enjoy the place more

“Deceiving and a shame the neighbourhood is so rundown”
Reviewed April 27, 2013

The guidebooks are quite deceiving about Vancouver's Chinatown. It is very sketchy given that it is so close to East Hastings (the roughest place in Vancouver). I made a quick trip with a purpose - buying some tea. I would suggest you avoid the place unless you have a predetermined objective. There are too many other good things to do in Vancouver. All that being said, the city really needs to put some thought in what it wants its Chinatown to look like. It is very unfortunate that Canada's west coast capital/asian gateway doesn't have a more vibrant and interesting Chinatown.
