Owner description: A bustling community started by Chinese immigrant laborers in the 1880s, Chinatown today is vibrant and full of exotic sights, sounds and smells.

There were a few nice places, I liked the chinese garden. But it did not have the allure as "china town" in London or Amsterdam. There are also man bums on the street.

I've been to Chinatown in: Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Singapore, Thailand, Korea, temple st Hong Kong and a few others and this is by FAR the saddest ChinaTown my eyes have seen.

Do not cross through Hastings Street if you have kids or have no street life experience. Full of drugs, prostitutes, beggars, thieves. Spare the kids, definitely not a family place.

As others have said, go to Dr. Sun Yat Sen's Chinese garden and Tea House. Be sure to go when there are no bus tours letting out. The one day we went, we were overwhelmed by the people getting off tour buses.
Chinatown is a real mix. Go with a positive attitude, and good things will come your way. The local shops have delightful and friendly staff. There are some real bargains to be had. There are a number of traditional food markets with very unusual produce. Tea shops are also plentiful.
There are some popular and good restaurants on Main Street.
Where Main Street intersects Hastings, I felt a bit uncomfortable with the sheer number of street people I encountered. However, no one bothered me.

Dr. Sun Yat Sen Center and Chinese Garden, food purveyors of everything except the usual, wonderful restaurants, and nice people. What more can you ask for in a neighborhood?

I love everything about Chinatown, Vancouver. The hustle and bustle, the colors, the aromas, the food, the diversity of languages filtering through my ears.
