We enjoyed walking around and checking out all the shops. Many native stores with some very impressive art and carvings (with impressive price tags to go along with it). Unfortunately, the stream clock was not in order, however we met a very interesting individual. Someone has already posted his photo, he would be the man who is wearing a welding mask working on a long piece of wood. His name is Dan Thompson and I was given a very special piece made specifically for me. Meeting him made our day! I am truly blessed to have spent some time talking to him.
When I return to Vancouver, I will make a point to return to visit.

This area is just a few minute walk from the cruise ship terminal. Worth the trip to take in the shops and check out the antique steam clock. Try to stick around the clock to listen to it chime on the hour, pretty cool. Overall it is a very nice area but I would not drive from a distance to check it out. If you are in the area stop in for a few hours....

Gastown is not what it once was. It use to be a unique destination, a fun place to take visitors to and walk around. As a teenager I would enjoy biking through the street to get to work. I have seen Gastown go through many phases. Sadly, various business come and go: Storyeum: History of BC preformed with actors, numerous restaurants, and stores. Originally, the area was the birthplace of Vancouver in Confederation year 1867, by John 'Gassy Jack' Deighton, now a National Historic site. It seems to be still popular with tourist, but I can't imagine many locals going there. It looks very tired. The Cobblestone Road needs much work....why are repairs made with black top and not with original stone? It use to have really good art stores, and modern furniture stores; now here seems to be a lot of souvenir stores. As for the clock people write about...it looks good BUT it is faux-Heritage steam clock.(it is fake!) It is less than 40 years old, partially run by steam, it has three electric motors inside. One runs a fan that blows the steam out the top. Another that controls the valves that plays the tunes on the five 'steam' whistles on the top of the clock. It was built over a steam grate to prevent the homeless from sleeping on the spot on cold nights. There is still an eclectic group of people there, they may add character to the street but is this what you want to see? Give Gastown a miss, go visit one of the many great parks in the Vancouver area: Stanley Park, English Bay, or even Ambleside Park. I will keep driving through the area until I have a good reason to shop or visit there.

An older part of the City with attractive buildings and shops and restaurants. We walked along the streets and then joined a bus tour there and had dinner in The Old Spaghetti Restaurant afterwards which was very good. Its a short walk from the waterfront and downtown hotels.

The steam clock is on the corner of Cambie St & Water St, don't miss it especially in the hour.
The rest of the neighborhood is the nicest looking place in Vancouver. Old buildings full of bespoke, boutique stores and restaurants.
