The Rocky Mountaineer should be on everyones bucket list
Its one of the Most enjoyable trips ever,
The service on board is amazing the staff cant do enough for you,
The views from the Dome Car in Gold leaf are brilliant and also the large viewing platform at the end of the Car is great,
I cant fault the staff they are so good at what they do and are very friendly and efficient,
Yes when the Freight Trains go by the Rocky Train goes to the side, just sit back and relax where the hurry to get anywhere
Food is very good and also good quality and some nice wines to enjoy also,
The hotels in Kamloops are not the most luxurious but do offer clean and comfortable nights stay,

The Rocky mountaineer is an experience every traveller will love. The train itself is an amazing attraction with large glass windows for simply fantastic views throughout the journey. The food is made to order and the restaurant on the lower deck is like something out of a book, The service is fabulous ! And if you couple this experience with stays at the Fairmont hotels, it is a trip that you will want to go on again.

My daughter and I had just spent a week on an Alaskan Cruise and we didn't think any other trip could surpass that experience but our 2 day journey through the Rocky Mountains was unforgettable.
After reading reviews we decided as this was an one off trip we would travel in Goldleaf status and really it is worth the extra money
Plus Factors Luggage collected from Hotel and transferred to overnight hotel and then transferred to hotel at the end of your journey
Magnificant views from large windows and glass dome ceiling
Comfortable seats which rotated
Hostesses who were passionate about their job gave us very knowledable commentaries throughout the 2 days
Separate dining carriage where breakfast and lunch off the highest cuisine was served
Served free tea coffee drinks and snacks all day whenever they were requested
Friendly mixed nationality co fellow passengers with whom it was a pleasure to talk too
We were treated like Royalty and nothing was too much trouble to ensure we enjoyed our trip
Downside the overnight hotel at Kamploops was a very basic standard and dinner wasn't included small gripe I know for just one night
Our journey ended in Banff where we stayed 2 nights before flying home from Calgary to Dublin
Two nights was really not long enough I would suggest 3 to 4 nights to enjoy Banff and see the wonderful sights We did the tour to Banff National Park Lake Louise and Lake Moraine which is a trip not to be missed We passed bears grazing at roadside and the bus stopped for photos, had we had more time we would have taken the cable car into the mountains.
The whole experience was unforgettable and everyone should have it on their bucket list of things to do.
We went late May early June the weather was very pleasant no need for thermals

We flew into Calgary. Spent a few days in Banff, Lake Louise, Jasper on our own and then to the train from Banff to Kamloops to Vancouver. After a couple of days in Vancouver we did Vancouver to Whistler. We took the train to Whistler and then did a private transport to the airport.

Either we don't expect as much or are easily entertained, but we LOVED our RED LEAF trip. Our meals were cold, but delicious (it's breakfast and lunch folks!) Dinner was at our hotel on a deck overlooking the river! LOVELY!

Our bags were checked by VERY PLEASANT folks. We did need to take an overnight bag, as our other bags were not with us until Vancouver. (Red Leaf, remember) However, every detail was covered down to being given our room keys before we ever left the train in Kamloops. The hotel was a bit out, but there was a restaurant right next door to the hotel that we loved. And it was only one evening. By the time we ate, walked the river, and chatted -- there wasn't time for anything else anyhow. The exterior of the hotel was nothing to look at, but the inside was beautiful and it was right along the river with balconies overlooking the water.

(In Whistler our bags were in our room long before we were. -- We had booked our own room, but as long as it was on their list, they did deliver the bags to our room)

A BIG surprise in service above and beyond: We had rented a car and dropped it off in Banff on our own. The drop off place was closed (even though we had checked with them ahead of time) Anyhow when we went to leave it and couldn't, Rocky Mountaineer took care of everything, even though they had nothing to do with the car rental. We gave them our keys and got on the train and all was fine! (Could have been quite a mess for us!)

Our car hostesses were lovely. Very attentive and helpful.

The viewing car got a bit crowded at times, but was open air and very nice.

Had it been in our budget, we probably would have enjoyed some of the amenities of the Gold or Silver -- but we certainly felt quite pampered and happy in Red. NEVER felt like we were "second class!" As a matter of fact, our hostess told us she preferred Red and worked like crazy to see to our needs!

When we got to Vancouver our bags were sorted and waiting. (We were not staying at a hotel in their list of serviced areas) Even though we had booked our own hotel, they were very organized in getting us in a cab. Had our bags and were on our way in under 15 minutes! All the bags had been sorted and were sitting on travel dollys for us to take off!

The views were wonderful. The trip was wonderful. The people were wonderful.

One interesting point -- we were three couples traveling together, and were a little surprised at the VAST difference in our hotel rooms in Kamloops. One couple had a Jacuzzi suite with a double balcony and living room, one had a king room with small balcony, and the third had a small room with two full-sized beds, no balcony and a small kitchenette. I inquired as to why the difference, but never heard back from RM.

There was also plenty of overhead room for our overnight bags. We did NOT have to have them under our feet for the train ride.

Basically the extra money gets you a nicer viewing car, hot meals and you get ALL of your luggage. (Which actually would have been more of a pain because we carried our own small overnight bag from the bus to the hotel and back out again.) Now, granted, in Gold, they probably deliver the bags to the room and pick them up -- but the bags were not a problem. But again, it was one night.

It was a once in a lifetime trip for us and we adored every moment. Being from the US -- we weren't really thinking that MAY is still early spring, so the flowers and such weren't blooming as much and we did take winter coats. But, all in all, it was pleasant, and we even went picnicking one day! (We also hiked in 18 inches of snow -- but it was all good!)

HOWEVER -- if I had to rate it? I would say the Anchorage-Denali scenery was more stunning. But this was a very close second.

We travelled as part of a group in the gold leaf carriage . Staff were superb - nothing to much trouble, very knowledgable and entertaining. The food was excellent, the drink flowed. A wonderful two day journey from Vancouver to Jasper. Would thoroughly recommend paying the extra for the Gold Leaf service if only for te wonderful panaramic views. Even going downstairs to eat gave you excellent views.
