“5-STAR SERVICE AT A 2-STAR PRICE”
Reviewed May 4, 2010

Can't beat the quality and service. Food is top-notch, although room service is significantly pricier than you'd expect for what you get, even for a five star hotel. However, that's a minor critique for an overall excellent experience. Staff was very friendly and attentive and hotel is right in the middle of downtown. Wouldn't recommend anywhere else.

My son was offered enrollment in UBC so we went up to Vancouver to visit the school.

I was able to book a room at theShangri la and with prepayment got a rate of $206 per night with free wifi, free parking and $60 dollars credit per day for breakfast. All in all this made it an affordable stay in a city with many very expensive hotels--all of which charge for the extras. Don't forget that Vancouver taxes add almost another 18%.
The hotel was top flight with great linens, fancy marble bathroom--the TV built into the bathroom mirror was a bit over the top, but neat--slippers robes and a safe that fits laptops. Called room service for a bucket of ice and I swear they appeared in less than five minutes. The staff was helpful, friendly and remembered my name. The decor and influance is asian--you will be handed your keys with both hands try to remember to accept them with two hands as well.

Parking is underground and comes in from the rear of the hotel. Not a big deal although I've seen reviews that complained about it. It's the tallest building downtown and distinctive looking so it is easy to find when walking around or driving into the city.

We were in the smallest of their rooms on the 15th floor and didn't have much of a view due to the other high rise buildings--the other side of the building offers balconies and larger rooms--if you want a view make sure you inquire or make a request. I would have killed for an upgrade!
Try the bar menu for an evening snack good burgers--we were there for the Stanley Cup playoffs and it was an interesting, multicultural, handsome and classy/casual crowd--they were serving buttered popcorn which sinfully rich. Eggs Benedict were great at breakfast and they had some really outstanding breakfast sausages (read not Jimmy Dean).
Summary, if traveling on the expense account don't think twice-- just book it! If you are on your own dime check out their deals on their website. It is expensive but then so are all of the other good hotels in Vancouver and the Shangri la really does stand out.

I'll be going to Xian China later this year and am looking forward to trying out their property there.

Loved it. Its a very new Hotel, great service (as you come to expect from the Shangri-La group), lovely staff, nice rooms (massive digital LCD tv), food and facilities also great. Room rate (last minute booking) was very good.

I've had the pleaser staying at the Shangri-La on a number of occasions over the last few month with friends. I have always been impressed with the level of service and the friendly staff. The only thing that could be better is that the in room breakfast is hit and miss.

From the moment that we checked in for a recent 4 day stay we realised that the Shangri La was special. The lobby is discreet and elegant and the building is the newest high rise in town. The room was faultless and immaculate. The beds were very comfortable , huge Sony Bravia TV, espresso machine, great bath , premium shower products and very quick wifi. The staff were faultless and the lunch menu at the restaurant was remarkable value at $20 a person. Great location in the centre of Downtown within very easy walking distance to great restaurants and sights. I couldnt fault the hotel - except on recollection maybe the Flat Screen TV was a little large for the room !!!

Just stayed an evening in a deluxe room - very large and well appointed - and beautiful bathroom. Was upgraded upon arrival based on Tablet Plus membership. Also had early check in and late check out. Much has been made of the underground reception/lobby for check-in/out. Definitely has advantages for those interested in privacy/discretion/quiet. I see it as a plus having experienced it firsthand, unless you like the hustle and bustle of many downtown hotels. But remember this is more of a boutique hotel - only 119 rooms - which caters to a more discerning traveler who isn't concerned with seeing and being seen. You don't have the general public in common areas, so hotel has a calmer aura about it. Great location - near excellent shopping and dining. Staff were friendly and proficient. Breakfast is expensive but ours was included as was valet parking.

My husband and I were going to a wedding downtown so we booked into the Shangri-la overnight. It was a fantastic experience from start to end. The rooms are perfectly appointed with tasteful furniture, art and textures. The ability to control all the lighting and draperies with the push of a button from the bed was decadent. The TV in the mirror made getting ready to go out a lot more fun. The bed was so soft! All the staff were professional and very helpful. A very worthwhile splurge!
