“Little things missing”
Reviewed July 12, 2013

We booked this hotel based on Tripadvisor reviews. It was nice, the room was large, the bathroom was very large and the make up mirror was a plus. However, it was a few small things that seemed to be missing for a luxury hotel. The shampoo, etc was an off brand, bar soap was small (and only one), the towels were small and not very plush and no gratis bottled water in the room, free coffee in the morning but no small muffins or croissants to go with. All things One would expect from a luxury hotel. Plus the air conditioning was very loud each time the fan started.

We chose this property after reading it's reviews on Trip Advisor and we were not disappointed. Our room was lovely with two bathrooms, small lounge and kitchen, laundry, main bedroom plus study. Elegantly furnished in an excellent location close to the main shopping district including the Hudson Department Store. We stayed at this property on a Saturday night and were not affected by the building works opposite as there is no construction work on a Sunday. The staff were most helpful and made us feel very welcome. I would certainly stay here again and would recommend it to others. A first class property.

we stayed a night at Hermitage before boarding the Alaskan cruise. The rooms are very well appointed & the staff is courteous. The location is excellent...walking distance from most attractions. The ambiance was very pleasing and the room was clean & thoughtfully decorated.
We had to wait a bit for our room was ready, during which time we were offered refreshments at the coffee shop.

We have just returned from our first visit to the west coast of Canada & started off with 4 nights at L'Hermitage (18th to 22nd June ) which I booked after spending many hours doing research & using Trip Advisor.
My first choice anywhere would be to stay at a boutique hotel & so L'Hermitage fitted the bill perfectly. The staff were all lovely & very helpful & I never felt that it was anything other than genuine.
Our room with king size bed & fireplace( fake flame but still homely to us Brits) was a very generous size & with a lovely large marble bathroom too. There was plenty of amenities including a safe, & iron & ironing board. The rooms were spotlessly clean & the housekeeping did a great job .
Unfortunately we did look out over the construction site across the road but as other travellers have said the double glazed windows meant you couldn't hear any noise. If you want a hotel with a view you would need to book one of the BIG hotels down near the waterfront area.
We found the hotel to be centrally well positioned for exploring Vancouver & there are free shuttle buses nearby to help with access to places like Capilano Suspension bridge.
The Concierge David was extremely helpful & gave us advice , directions , discount coupons & even kindly booked our restaurant reservations for when we were in Whistler over the Canada Day long weekend. (BTW David, the Rim Rock Cafe was the best & I had 3 of the best courses I have ever had in my life ! )
So well done & thank you to everyone at L'Hermitage ,you deserve your top rating, & keep up the great work!

We have recently returned from a really enjoyable stay at L'Hermitage, Vancouver, for 13 nights in June 2013, during the Vancouver International Jazz Festival (lots of free and paying events, all of which we could walk to from this hotel)
I cannot fault the ambiance, service, cleanliness and helpful, friendly and courteous staff in this beautiful boutique hotel in downtown Vancouver.
We had a petite boutique king room, with fridge and it was lovely and quiet, overlooking the pool and Jacuzzi, so that we could either use the, adjustable, air con, or open the windows and hear the water from the pools.
The linen and pillows were clean and new and the bedroom/lounge, bathroom and separate toilet were kept spotless. Room service staff were totally efficient, very pleasant, friendly and courteous and quick to respond.
The reception staff and concierge were welcoming, helpful and efficient at the same time, always acknowledging our coming and going (which makes you feel valued) and the concierge service was invaluable, with their vast local knowledge and ability to book tickets for anything and even provide vouchers for local attractions.
The French manager, who trains the staff, is probably the reason the hotel is this good, as, in my experience, an organisation is only as good as its leader and he certainly seemed to have his finger on the pulse of the hotel and genuinely seemed to care, both about the welfare of his customers and of the people who work in the hotel - it seemed like a happy, homely and quietly understated, but very efficient place.
I cannot recommend it highly enough and hope we will return.

L'Hermitage really is as good as its reviews say. We stayed for week in June, booking a one-bedroom boutique suite, which turned out to have a full kitchen as well (full as in 4 ring hob, full size fridge/freezer, oven, dishwasher, microwave, crockery, cutlery, pots, pans, washing machine, dryer ... wasn't expecting that!). The room was superb and the facilities more than we could have wished for, but the differentiator here were the staff. Unfailingly friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble, and every need is catered for. For example, we asked the concierge to book us a table at the restaurant next door (which is excellent by the way, justifying its quite high prices in our opinion); not only did he do it, but a while later a bell boy turned up at our room with a carefully typed card confirming the booking and all of the details. Very stylish.

Then only quirk was that housekeeping turned up at odd hours on occasions - we were out from 8 until 4 one day and the room hadn't been done - but they always turn up or make personal contact if they can't get in.

Overall, L'Hermitage is the kind of hotel you want to take around the world with you. Truly outstanding.

Vancouver on the other hand ... hmmmm. In terms of "destination cities", it was for us a massively surprising disappointment. We decided that as long as you stand at the edges and look out from the city, it's fine. The natural setting is lovely - ignoring the container port, cement works and the high rise areas of North Vancouver - and there are plenty of good things to do in the area including great trips out to Whistler etc, but the core downtown city of Vancouver was to us a mess. Aesthetically, it's a zero: scruffy to slightly seedy low rise gives way to the no-go areas around Chinatown, then fades into truly hideous high rise over-development. I've never seen so many architecturally worthless apartment blocks crammed into such a small space. It's like the guy who designed south London's 1960's council estates moved to Vancouver and just keep on building. And they are STILL putting them up. The north shore has been trashed, barring a narrow green waterfront strip, by a combination of these transplanted South Circular lovelies and the truly awful concrete unfriendliness that is the Canada Place convention centre and cruise terminal. It was hard to find more than a handful of buildings that looked like anything other than shoddy cash-ins on a building boom.

On top of that, there are more addicted, distressed and mentally ill people abandoned on the streets than I have seen in any other comparable city I've been to - it's worse than central San Francisco. Considering the money washing around the place - I've never seen so many Ferrarris and Lambos - the city's apparent inability or unwillingness to help these people is an embarrassment and a disgrace. You see the cops rousting them occasionally, but mostly they seem to be left to sleep wherever they land - like the middle of the pavement - or to pan-handle moderately pushily on street corners. It's not what I expected from "nice" Canada.

The food is good, if occasionally over-priced, and the people are super friendly and service is excellent ... it's just they've concreted over any character it might once have had.

Fabulous hotel, overrated city.

Previous excellent reviews prompted us to select this hotel for our recent visit to Vancouver. We stayed for 5 nights. The location was ideal for us - a short walk to the downtown area and easy access to cafes, restaurants and convenience stores. All the staff were great - really friendly and helpful and took pleasure in explaining the best options for us with sightseeing visits. With their advice we quickly mastered the local bus and sky-train routes, which we used quite a lot - even for our visit to Victoria.
The hotel rooms are very comfortable and well furnished in a modern style. We used the cosy business centre, which had 2 computers linked to printers, so we could keep in contact with our families.
There is some major building works opposite the hotel, but we did not find this to be a problem at all.
Definitely it's an ideal place to stay for people looking for a reasonably priced smart hotel that prides itself on excellent customer service.

Room Tip: If you are visiting Victoria for a few days, consider using the sky train and bus to the ferry termi...
