After a little shopping on Davies street I made my back to my hotel on Robson. Along the way I noticed the bright pink signage of La Catrina and made a note to stop in later for dinner, as Mexican is one of my favourite cuisines. Back at the hotel Google said they were closed but I took a walk over anyway and found the diner open. The eatery is small and humble and a few people were line. The menu was simple but had options for various meat tacos and happily for me as a vegetarian, four separate meat free options. I got the $10 combo plate at the recommendation of the staff and tried one of each, even taking a chance on a pablano pepper taco. I got the food to go and within a few minutes the order was up. I loaded the tacos up with the four sauces provided (avacado, chipotle, and hot sauces of varying heat) and headed back to the hotel. The food was awesome. My favourite was the refried bean, but close behind was the potato and corn and fried mushroom. Even the pablano taco was great. The food tasted fresh, the aromatics were mouthwatering, and each taco was distinct and delicious. I had planned to return the next day but a slightly changed work schedule meant I was back on the plane before I had the chance. It will be my go to next time I'm back in Vancouver. An assortment of domestic and other beverages were available and a tip jar at the counter got a deposit from me due to the staff's friendly disposition. Great location, best food I'd had in a while, and friendly staff make La Catrina a stand out.
