First time for braised octopus and it was excellent. One of our party had a good beet salad. I had beef tenderloin that was very good, but I wish I had stuck with seafood. Two of our group had Vietnamese Pho and raved about it. Our friends had very great cocktails and we managed to empty a bottle of Quail's Gate Chardonnay. Spotted Cow is quite small and has a bistro atmosphere; wood chairs don't encourage long, leisurely meals. Diners are quite close together too, however, there was enough ambient noise that shared conversation was not a problem. We would go back.

This place has a real buzz and we ate here two nights out of our four night stay in Tofino. It only has about 24 covers so you'll almost certainly not get in unless you pre-book. The food is freshly cooked and the kitchen forms part of the room so you see what is going on. Duck and fresh fish ( especially octopus ) were as good as you'll get in the best City restaurants.

We were glad we'd called ahead -- it's a small, very pleasant room, and though the place wasn't yet full when we walked in (early-ish, Friday night, mid-September), we watched quite a few folks leaving disappointed when they tried to drop in, as we were enjoying a delicious meal.

We totally enjoyed everything we had. (3 of us, and we did some taste-sharing.) The inference from "planks" for plates and "jars" for drinks is a bit misleading; we didn't do the crab dinner, and didn't eat on planks. Our plates were attractively presented. And in this place, the jars thing was kinda cute. The service was both friendly and attentive. The two salads we shared, the fresh, rare Tuna Nicoise, the braised octopus appetizer and the honey-infused panna cotta were highlights, but it was all really good.

Having heard so many great things about this place from locals I was disappointed to say that my meal was very average. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't great like I was expecting. Tucked into a corner it is hard to find and doesn't particularly offer any special views or ambiance. While we enjoyed the patio seating with blankets and heaters, our server often forgot about us and we saw another couple (seated after us) have their order, drinks, meal served, and receive their final cheque all before we received our main dish.

This being said, the food was good. It wasn't outstanding and so with so many other options in town I don't think we would return.

+ Excellent food
+ Excellent service
- Insufficient seating - need to reserve. We sat outside and although they offered us outside heaters and blankets it was still cold
- Part of the chocolate plate was a little too rich
