Jens Kalwa, o/o of Adventure Tofino B&B, offers three wildlife viewing trips from his own comfortable boat: bear watch, whale watch, and hot springs. Bear watch (all black bears): We saw a mother with 3 cubs, and—further along—two separate juveniles. Hot springs: Fantastic wildlife sightings, including grey whales, a pod of transient killer whales, and one minke whale, Steller and California sea lions, harbour seals, sea otters (note the plural!), and beautiful seabirds. Much of this was because Jens is an experienced and safety-conscious sailor and knows where wildlife is likely to be observed. He was careful not to frighten the animals by approaching too closely, and shared his considerable knowledgeable of their natural history. As I am a marine biologist and my husband is a self-taught naturalist, we had a great time. BTW, early May is a great time: migratory birds everywhere, few people as it's the start of the season.
