“Great Hotel; tiny room!”
Reviewed August 6, 2007

We stayed at the Beach Lodge and had a great view over the sea but for an expensive hotel the room was very small; no wardrobe and only hooks on the wall for clothes and nowhere to put cases out of the way; no chairs in the room either. The breakfast was buffet style and good and there was a large comfortable lounge. We ate in the hotel one night and it was very good: you have to order in the morning and the choice is limited. Access to two beaches direct from the hotel via paths and steps.

My husband and I stayed at Middle Beach Lodge with another couple, renting one of the two-bedroom cabins for our stay. The views from this resort are not to be believed -- after checking in and seeing our room, we rearranged the remainder of our trip to Vancouver so that we could stay an extra day. The resort sits on a peninsula of sorts, with water/beach/island views all around. The sounds of the surf can be heard in the evenings (from your jacuzzi on the private deck) and I could lay in bed and see the ocean from my bedroom window.

The resort has an overall casual feel to it - the furnishings include Kilim rugs, stone fireplaces, cedar paneling, rustic wooden furniture, yet there's something about the place that still feels luxurious. The extra touches, like down throw blankets in the sitting area for snuggling into an Adirondack chair on the deck, fresh cookies at 8:00 PM, yellow rain slickers and rubber boots by the doorway to use while strolling the beach. These thoughtful touches added to the cozy charm of the resort. The Continental breakfast was very generous and included home-made muffins and cinnamon rolls, and other breakfast treats.

One (minor) suggestion for improvement is that the staff is generally young - one gets the sense that the place is run by college students. Most are very very helpful, but a few seemed a bit disinterested, even though they were friendly. I wouldn't let this dissuade you from considering Middle Beach Lodge, however.

We had considered staying at the Relais Chateaux property nearby, but decided against it -- curious, we stopped by the Wikkinninish to see how it compared. After a good look around we decided the view at Middle Beach was superior, the cabins allowed you to feel much "closer" to the outdoors compared to the typical hotel set-up of Wikkinnish, and the casual feel of Middle Beach made it our #1 choice.

I'd highly recommend Middle Beach Lodge for your stay in Tofino -- I will remember the setting, the warmth and charm of the place for a long time to come.

  • Liked — Thoughtful extra touches and spectacular views
  • Disliked — A few disinterested college students who worked there.

We stayed in a lodge room with a balcony. Beware of two things: some of the balconies (like ours) are standing only, so you can't sit and enjoy the beautiful view, and two, many of the upper balconies have no cover so if it rains (and you're in a rain forest), you're our of luck. That being said, our room was fine. I was worried about noise because we were staying in the lodge but that worry was unfounded. The view was beautiful. The front desk staff was friendly and very helpful. The breakfast was excellent and plentiful. We even made pb&j sandwiches for our hike. Try the ginger-orange jam, yum, yum, yum.

Overall, we loved our stay and would return. If you need a lot of extra amenities and service, stay at the overpriced Wick.

The Middle Beach Lodge overlooks a beautiful wide sandy beach with stunning views of the ocean. It is very quiet with just the relaxing sound of waves crashing on the beach.

The rooms were pleasant and had balconies. They were not very well equipped, quite small and with nowhere to hang clothes (apart from a row of pegs on the wall). The bathroom was compact. The lodge had a laundry room which was a blessing as we had been travelling for quite a few days and were running out of clean clothes.

Dining was offered at the lodge, this was a peculiar arrangement and was not particularly good. However, Tofino is a short drive away and has many good restaurants (the Shelter and Sea Shanty restaurants were excellent).

Tea/Coffee was available all day. The breakfast buffet was minimal but adequate.

Overall, the lodge was set in a stunning location and was a comfortable stay.

We should had listened to another traveller's review !!!

The 4 of us stayed 2 nights at the 1 bedroom "Deluxe Sixplex Suite" (#61) at Lodge at the Headland at Middle Beach Lodge in July for $410 per night (charged us extra because the base rate is based on double occupancy).

From our last trip, we found having a cabin RIGHT ON the beach is crucial. With the beach in less than 30 steps away, you can enjoy a romantic night under the Tofino starry sky anytime at night; or, you can have a rejuvenating morning stroll along the beach when u pop right out of bed.

SO before we made the reservation, we specifically asked HOW FAR is the cabin from the beach. And we were told cabin #61 is a Beach House and we can WALK to the beach from cabin #61 in less than 10 SECONDS!!!!!!!!!!!!

When we got there, we found the cabin in fact is SITTING ON A HIGH CLIFF (~50m) ABOVE the Mazkenize beach!!! Definitely NOT ON THE BEACH as the receptionist mentioned!!! The only way to get down to the beach in 10 seconds is by jumping off the cliff !!! There is a path leading down to the beach but it took us 10 MINUTES****** We are all healthy adults in our 20s! Also the path is quite steep, slippery, creepy and can be dangerous at night!!

The CONS summarized:
- Definitely NOT "beach front" as advertised.
- Suite is TOO SMALL, the futon is terrible, and too expensive for a group of 3-4 people.
- The Queen size futon is the worst i have slept on so far. I know I cannot expect much from a futon, but it is just terrible. Absolutely no support for your back. The floor is a better option if you want to sleep.
- The suite has a rustic feel to it - while the picture posted on the MBL website appears to be quite modern.
- NO BBQ stove provided. Bring your portable one. You are allowed to bbq on your balcony.

The only PROS:
- Overall the suite was clean, pretty quiet (couldn't hear anything at nite), surrounded by wilderness. A good place for relaxation.
- Suite size is good and cozy for COUPLES ONLY.
- Full kitchen (oven, stove, dishwasher, fridge) with all the necessary kitchen tools & equipments
- Has TV, mini stereo system - bring our own CD.
- Fresh towels daily. Bedsheets and floor were clean.
- Our ground flr unit has a balcony with a 180 degree Pacific
oceanview
- Free Breakfast (fresh muffin, waffles, fruits, milk, juice and coffee) at 8-10am daily
- Friendly staffs.

Conclusion:
As a group, we recommend you to stay away from MBL. For $410/ nite, I highly recommended renting those REAL beachfront cabin. Many of them not only come with fantastic view, outdoor hot tub, BBQ stove, full kitchen, full laundry, but also they are much bigger and cheaper per head!

As a couple, we will think twice to come back again if we don't have any option as we are big fan for the beach. Note that NONE of the suit / cabin / room at MBL has real "less than a minute" walk to the beach. IF beach front is not your number one criteria, then I will say the rate at MBL for the smaller units are considered reasonable compare to other accommodation at Tofino. Also, MBL is located at a good reasonable driving distance to DT Tofino and any attractions.

We'd tried to stay here years ago when there was no room available that would take children. Returned sans children and it was as wonderful as I remembered. Wished I'd realized that the 6 plexes were upstairs, downstairs and that if we were downstairs we'd hear people shuffling around at night. Other than that the room was great (# 42). We loved the deck overlooking the bay where we could watch the sunset and read in the afternoon. Next time I'd take a booklight along to assist in reading. We were disappointed in the dinner, we found the baked halibut to be bland and the rice to be gummy, I liked the salads, husband was unimpressed, ate in town after the first night. Lots of breads(rolls, muffins, bagles, toast, waffles) at breakfast, boiled eggs were great, but went away quickly. Apples, oranges, bananas and tea, coffee and hot chocolate available all day.

We stayed 2 days, ground floor room with a balcony. We really enjoyed our stay, loved the balcony and the great view. But...The room really was too small and the bathroom was ridiculous. The sink was in the bedroom. Not what we expected. We had been travelling for 2 weeks and have a lot of luggage. Except for pegs on the wall there was no storage. We will return to Tofino if we get a change but will try another hotel.
