“Middle Beach Lodge in Tofino is the best!”
Reviewed February 9, 2014

MBL is our favourite place to fet away to in Tofino. The staff is great, the breakfasts are great, the dinners are great, the rooms in the lodge are great and the beaches are great. We went for 4 nights and explored much if Tofino and Uclulet. The Great Room is really comfy and the atmosphere is good.

Room Tip: Ask for one with a view, if available. If not, do not worry.

I am only giving this hotel a poor rating because it isn`t very family friendly. If you are a couple with no children then it is a very nice place to stay. Dogs are welcome too which is great. It has a beautiful setting. The main lodge is beautiful and the breakfast is very good. The cabins are cosy and have great views.
We stayed in one of the cabins as children are not allowed in main lodge. We were put in a cabin right next to where they were doing exterior construction in one of the main buildings. We were eventually moved a cabin over after asking a couple of times. We were charged an extra $20 per day for our child even if though they are under 12. If you have more than one child it would add a lot of expense. Even with one child we had to pay an extra $40 for the weekend which was a bit much. That is on top of staying in the cabins which aren`t cheap.

Over the past years our group (5 couples) has made a number of trips from Vancouver over to stay at Middle Beach Lodge...an almost perfect place to get-a-way to, Although the room are small, the lounge in either lodge provide the very thing one needs...comfort, coffee, cookies, a great fireplace...games and videos (for the TV room) are available...This time of year Feb. 2014) we were extremely lucky to have beautiful weather, but, no matter, it's always enjoyable no matter the weather. You're right above the beach, and very close into Tofino (5 minute drive) for those needing shopping, or baked goods, restaurants, galleries and outdoor activities. The staff is always a delight, our room was cleaned and made up each day. WiFi was good and there's no additional charge.
Some more and better lighting would be appreciated in the parking areas and the onsite trails.

Room Tip: no, won't give away our best choices....

We booked at the Middle Beach Lodge based on local recommendation and it was well worth it! Surrounded by the ocean next to two beaches on top of rocky headland -wow!

The grounds are big so make sure you know which building you need to register in. There are two main buildings, the newer Lodge at the Headlands (child-friendly) and the older building Lodge at the Beach (for guests 18+), along with a few smaller buildings/cabins. We arrived at the Headlands, but no one was there. We pressed the call button, but no on answered and eventually called on our cell to find that our registration was in a different building. Not a big deal -we explored this lodge a bit before heading down to the Lodge at the Beach less than a minute drive down.

Our room at the Lodge at the Beach was small and very basic with queen bed with a bathroom/tub, and wash basin outside the bathroom in the room. The room overlooked the ocean, exactly the view we wanted. Our room had no balcony, but it did have big windows that opened. No closet space, just wall pegs along the wall to hang your clothes. No tv in room, but there was a communal tv room anyone could access with movies (no one used it). Wifi was also available, for those in need. The view from the room provided all the entertainment- the sunrise on the beach and the action-packed sounds of the ocean. The room was just fine for my husband and I -we were here to spend most of our time outdoors!

Complimentary breakfast was self-serve between 8-10am downstairs in the lodge. Simple and easy: croissants, cinnamon rolls, various breads/toast, jam, peanut butter, cream cheese, hard boiled eggs, cereals/granola, yoghurt, juices, fresh fruits with coffee and tea served all day.

The lodge downstairs was beautiful-lots of comfy couches and places to lounge around, fireplace, tables for games -all overlooking the ocean. The staff were really friendly and causal. Raincoats and rubber boots were available for guest use and flashlight in the room for evening strolls. You can access two beaches from this lodge, Middle Beach and MacKenzie Beach, both walking distance. Town of Tofino is not to far away.

This was our 6th time in Tofino, 1st time at the Middle Beach Lodge and we would come back here again! Thanks to all the staff for making it great!

Room Tip: Room with ocean view

Middle Beach Lodge has for many years been our accommodation of choice for our West Coast New Year’s holiday.
The lounge of the Lodge at the Headlands, with its warming fireplace and Ralph Lauren-meets-McKenzie Beach décor is a perfect place to relax with coffee and a book at any time of day. We were pleased to see on this visit that the kitchen portion of our unit had been upgraded and improved. However, it was very apparent that the entire operation is much in need of some professional management skills. When we checked in on Dec. 30th, we were disappointed that dinner would not be served that night, as for the first time in many years New Years Eve dinner would be served. We had already made other plans, and were assured by the young man who checked us in that a hot breakfast would be available on New Year’s Day, between 8:00 and 12:00. Before we went out on New Year’s Eve, we contacted the front desk to recheck the breakfast hours, and the 8 – 12 schedule was confirmed. However, when we came for breakfast at 10:15 on New Year’s Day, the buffet had been cleared, and the attending staff stated that breakfast had ended at the normal hour of 10:00. We quoted the prior times, and with some reluctance, the staff brought out some breakfast items, the “hot” foods by now barely warm. More hungry guests arrived, obviously having been given the same hours. The chef then came out to apologize to us, and said she would make “something special” for my wife, which turned out to be a Belgian waffle with cherry sauce, and 8 slices of bacon (she had requested 1), all lukewarm. The chef, who was absolutely charming, later came out to chat, and recounted her difficulties with untrained staff; all the while we spoke, four previously-used but now-empty tables along our row had not been cleared of crumbs, and a central table remained covered with dirty dishes during our entire conversation. The tables were were still so when we left the dining room.
I appreciate that most of the staff have little formal food service training, but feel strongly that key personnel should be professional, so that the service lives up to the promise of the spectacular natural setting, impressive physical facilities, and appealing décor.

Room Tip: We prefer the triplex units; 36 - 38. Good views, no kitchen noise.

Dear Dick_B,

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience at Middle Beach Lodge, in beautiful Tofino, BC! Although you enjoyed most aspects of your stay, I will address the concerns brought to our attention in this review.

This was the first year that we have stayed open during the holiday season in December, as we thought that this would be a wonderful time for guests to experience how festive Middle Beach Lodge could be. While offering our normal 3 dinners a week (off season), we decided to also offer a special Christmas Eve dinner, a Christmas Day dinner, and a New Year's Eve dinner, followed with a hot brunch on New Year's Day. Normally breakfast hours are indeed 8:00am - 10:00am, however, we had organized and planned to do a hot brunch until 12:00pm. The chef and the kitchen were fully aware of this, but somewhere along the line of communication, the very new "green" breakfast staff were never made aware of this OR they simply thought they still needed to end breakfast at 10:00am due to a lack of guests, and for this I do sincerely apologize.

Furthermore, your comments about the cleanliness of the dinner service are quite concerning. However, please try to remember that we are not a fully fledged restaurant, but rather a COMPLIMENTRY breakfast is something we want to be able offer to our guests as a nice added service for them to enjoy. As we only staff two kitchen servers each morning, as we have been doing for the last few years, you can imagine that with breakfast numbers sometimes reaching 80+ adults it can become quite the task to have everything spotless throughout the entire breakfast service. I think anyone who has had the pleasure of staying with Middle Beach Lodge, will let you know that our breakfast is one of their favourite aspects of their stay and that our breakfast staff work as fast and as hard as they can to provide this service.

I will personally share your comments with our chef and kitchen staff at our next staff meeting. Our hope is that in the future, should you stay with Middle Beach Lodge again, we will be able to offer you an unforgettable experience that will change your opinion. Thank you!

Sincerely,

Markus McRurie
