“A room with a view!”
Reviewed September 23, 2013

We stayed in a threeplex cabin for three nights in early September. We had reserved a sixplex room, but were upgraded upon checkin for no charge. We were on the first level and had an amazing view of the beach and outlying islands from our porch. There were two adirondack chairs and a table on the porch, which we used several times each day. The cabin itself was two small rooms and a bathroom. Everything was clean, the bed was extremely comfortable, and the windows all opened for great sea breezes. There is nothing fancy about the furnishings. The bathroom fixtures are basic, and the kitchenette was not really suitable for cooking. We did use the small refrigerator to store our picnic items. The breakfast at the lodge each morning was good. There were fresh pastries, fruit, coffee, cereals, juices and yogurts each day. Short walk to a nice sandy beach and great views from the lodge porch. We really enjoyed our stay, but I can see how some might be disappointed by the room appointments for the price.

Lovely collection of cabins and two central lodges on the tip of the coast outside Tofino.

Nestled between Mackenzie Beach and Middle Beach this is ideally situated for stunning vistas and private walks alone scheduled beaches.

Our room was comfortable although looking a bit dated when compared to the web site.

The staff weren't the friendliest when we arrived but this was due to one person on reception rather than the team who are generally very nice.

We had dinner here the first night but there was no indication you could ask for something other than the set menu. Thankfully the chef had cooked an alternative as I didn't like the shellfish on offer. That said the meal I did have was lovely.

Breakfast is plentiful and continental which means you can have as much or as little as you want

There is only one sitting for dinner.

You get unlimited tea, coffee and fruit through the day and the bar had a good selection of BC wines and local(ish) beers although a little pricey.

We enjoyed a very comfortable stay here and would love to return although we will be better prepared when we do.

Middle Beach is a great resort but a little tired in the rooms and the staff can take things for granted. If you visit spend your time in the main lodge by the log fire or on the veranda and watch the world go by. Just don't be afraid to ask if you're not sure about something.

The furnishings are eclectic and rustic. We stayed in the 6 plex where the room was definately cozy but we really didn't need much more room. The balcony was a good size facing the ocean and we were lulled to sleep with the sounds of the waves. Breakfast was good with cinnamon buns, fruit, boiled eggs, toast, cereals, the usual. We haven't had dinner at the lodge as we arrived too late on Saturday to make reservations the first night and then had to wait until Tuesday
for the restaurant to open again (closed Sundays and Mondays).

Room Tip: The end units in the 6 plex have the bigger balconys, the Highlands complex is closer to the dining...

The views are gorgeous, the breakfast is good, and the staff are very pleasant. But the rooms leave much to be desired -- especially for the price. Our room was tiny with slopes on the ceilings such that head-banging was hard to avoid. The bathroom had the tiniest shower space imaginable- had either of us been at all overweight we could not have showered. More importantly, however, was the poor state of the walls and furniture and the extreme dampness and mold. I know that when you are by the ocean it is damp, but appropriate air circulation is necessary and with no fan and no air conditioning it is almost inevitable that mold will grow. Add to that old carpeting and curtains, and you have a recipe for disaster for allergy sufferers like us. So, lovely, but too basic, unhealthy and way over-priced.

Dear Novascotiakate,

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience at Middle Beach Lodge, in beautiful Tofino, BC. We do agree that our views are gorgeous and we are thrilled you enjoyed our lovely breakfasts each morning.

Your mention of "mold" is extremely concerning to us and we have informed our maintenance and housekeeping managers to do a thorough inspection of the rooms you stayed in. As we are located near the ocean we have always had preventative measures in place to stop any early stages of this. We just recently completed a ventilation project underneath these specific rooms to increase air flow beneath the building and in between the floors of the units. We do apologize that your allergies acted up during your stay and again this will be discussed with the housekeeping department.

I would like to encourage you to contact myself or our General Manager, Josh Hannigan with any further comments or concerns.

Our hope is that if you were to return to the West Coast we would have the opportunity to show you that your past experience does not truly represent our brand.

Kind Regards,

My husband and I recently stayed at the MIddle Beach Lodge for a friends wedding. We had the entire place to ourselves as the Lodge was shut down specifically for the wedding event the whole weekend, so our experience was a bit different than others.

That being said, we had an absolutely amazing time! The Lodge itself is quite rustic with the rooms being very basic, but the location can not be beat and it would be an absolutely perfect place for rest, relaxation and solitude. The main house has a beautiful lounge area with a huge fireplace and many places to sit down relax, read and enjoy the view. The lodge is RIGHT on the beach so early morning or evening walks along the water are at your doorstep. We found the service to be excellent the entire weekend and the food was excellent as well.

There are no spa facilities on site for those who want to pamper themselves, but the Lodge is affiliated with a spa nearby and they offer discounts if you are staying there. All of the guests enjoyed surfing with the Pacific Surf School while we were there and had an absolutely fabulous time!!

A great getaway for couples who are looking for a rustic, romantic weekend or even friends who want to hang out and enjoy what Tofino has to offer. In addition, a great wedding pick!! We would recommend Middle Beach Lodge and hope to come back ourselves some time soon!

Room Tip: There are several different kinds of rooms depending on your vacation needs. You can stay in the lod...

Checked out today. Beautiful setting, lovely communal areas and staff that cannot do enough for you. However, bedrooms are a different matter. Rooms are basic, no tv or phone, but you can live with that, in fact it adds to the serenity. However, there is no temperature control so I was sweltering and the absence of any air conditioning made for an unpleasant two nights sleep. My room also stank and had a musty, sweaty smell from previous inhabitants. Fan was provided but this broke down and after this only a heater could be produced. Not really good enough. When queried, I was told that the weather was unusually hot. I was also told that the temperature control in the room had been switched off across the property! I was advised to open the window, which made no difference at all and was told that the hotel had security so I could sleep with my ground floor balcony door open. As I overlooked the beach, I was not comfortable with this. There are lovely touches such as fresh baked breakfast goods and cookies after dinner. I arrived after 3pm to check in and the relaxing lounge area was full of crumbs on the floor from breakfast, croissants, etc. Rustic is all very well, but you expect communal areas to be cleaned regularly, especially when people are encouraged to eat on couches, etc. Another bonus is that this is an adults only property. I love children, but the absence of them here was bliss. If only the hotel would modernise their guest bedrooms, provide AC and a shuttle to town (a 2 mile ride but $15 one way by taxi and no public transport alternative), this place would be heaven!

Room Tip: One with good ventilation!

Dear Nadia A,

Thank you for taking the time to review your recent experience at Middle Beach Lodge, in beautiful Tofino, BC. We are glad you found our location to be stunning and that you found our staff to be helpful and friendly. Thank you for expressing your concerns and please note that we will be discussing all the below issues with our management team at our upcoming meeting.

The lodge room that you stayed in was one of our unique lodge rooms at the Lodge at the Beach. We do advise guests at the time of booking that none of these units come with a TV or a phone, and then again in the email confirmation we reiterate this once more.

Your comment about the communal lodge being "unkempt" is concerning as we do have scheduled cleanings throughout the day for all of our common areas. As these tend to be high traffic zones, they require cleaning every half hour to keep up with the constant flow of guests enjoying our tasty treats and coffee bar. We do apologize that your first impression of the common area was not the normal cleanliness we at Middle Beach Lodge like to promote.

We are glad you enjoyed the freshly baked goods we prepare for breakfast as well as the absence of children at the adult only lodge.

I would like to encourage you to contact myself or our General Manager, Josh Hannigan with any further comments or concerns.

Our hope is that if you were to return to the West Coast we would have the opportunity to show you that your past experience does not truly represent our brand.

Kind Regards,
